the rivalry can be sparked by the Fins being a consistently tough team to beat year in and year out, rather than sweeping them every year minus last year.

or the tide can go the other way for 8 years, we don't know.

sanchez has nothing to do with it. its the teams themselves.

Hey, come on, the offseason is slow, and great writers like EDGAR THOMPSON need things to do.

    And interceptions.

This was a good rivalry from 1998-2002 even though we beat them every game. All the games were meaningful and typically well played games (minus the midnight miracle). Outside of that it hasn't been much of a rivalry since the early to mid 80s.

PALM BEACH GARDENS — New York Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez looked downfield and let the ball go just as his receiver broke free.

No one really cared what happened next, least of all Sanchez.

    What are these?

Even when the pass fell incomplete, he wore the smile of a man free of expectations and pressure.

    It had been a while.

Tossing passes Tuesday with teenaged boys and girls during a youth camp as part of the NFL Rookie Symposium was an escape for Sanchez.

Ever since the Jets traded three players and two picks April 25 to move up 12 spots in the draft to select Sanchez No. 5, the former Southern Cal All-America has been one of the biggest stories in the nation's biggest city.

"Nothing's quite like New York," he said during the rookies' orientation at PGA National Resort and Spa. "It's bigger and better and faster and tougher than any other city you're in. But at the same time, I love every part of it and am embracing it."

The Jets are banking on Sanchez, 22, to eventually conquer one of the nation's most demanding sports towns for a team that usually has taken a backseat to the Yankees, Giants and Knicks ever since Joe Namath's knees began to give out 40 years ago.

Sanchez is the Jets' highest-drafted quarterback since Namath went No. 1 in 1965 and has the inside track to a job held last season by Brett Favre, the all-time leader in passing yards and touchdowns.

"Those are Super Bowl champs," Sanchez said of Namath and Favre. "That's pretty rarefied air. I don't want to get too ahead of myself.

"I need to understand this is going to be a grand challenge. I'm excited for it."

Sanchez (6-foot-2, 227 pounds) seems to have the tools and temperament to help reignite a Jets-Dolphins rivalry that had languished in recent seasons until former Jet Chad Pennington led the Dolphins to the AFC East title against Favre in the Meadowlands in the final game of last season.

Sanchez is a native of Long Beach, Calif., but is well aware of the enmity between the teams, stoked by a large contingent of Jets followers in South Florida.

When the teams meet Oct. 12 on Monday Night Football, Sanchez expects his first prime-time game in the NFL to be an experience to remember.

"It'll be great," he said. "(But) I'm just worried about camp right now and focused on that. We'll get to Monday Night Football when it comes.

"We'll keep it all in perspective."

Sanchez, who will compete with fourth-year pro Kellen Clemens for the starting job, still has to prove himself.

One question about Sanchez is experience, given he started only 16 games in college.

But in his one season as a full-time starter, he threw 41 touchdowns for the 12-1 Trojans, including four touchdown passes in a 38-24 Rose Bowl win against Penn State.

Buffalo Bills rookie defensive end Aaron Maybin, a former Nittany Lion and a first-round pick, recalled Sanchez's performance Tuesday, expecting to have a tough time against him twice a year for some time to come.

"He's a very athletic guy, very mobile guy," Maybin said. "He's able to do some things throughout the course of the game other people can't do.

"I'm expecting him to do a pretty good job."

For now, Sanchez said he's not thinking beyond July 31 - the first day of training camp.

Between now and then, he plans to go to California to see his family and prepare for the challenge ahead.

Sanchez knows he'll never be completely ready for what awaits him next season in New York.

He was, however, lucky enough to meet a couple of guys recently who were able to lend him some insight - golfer Tiger Woods and Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter.

Sanchez said he's amazed how Jeter, a 15-year veteran who has won four World Series, has handled himself all these years in New York.

But Sanchez also sounds like he already gets it.

"(Quarterback is) a position in high demand," he said. "You're in New York. It's the greatest place to be and to win.

"That's what I'm focused on doing. You have to win first."
