These key pieces I noted are still missing from NY Jets...For them to have a successful season : 1- Back-up NT...please don't say Pouha...Hard to believe there's no back-up yet 2- Back-up young OL ....Not counting 6th & 7th round picks 3- OL & DL have to be upgraded.... Not many pieces , but very key & neccessary ingredients indeed for a successful season. Lets see who Jets pick-up during training camp. I didn't mention WR, because I feel Jets will be ok with what they have or sign somebody. Jets' need another RB to add to the mix also, will see who steps up.
Pouha is a serviceable backup. OL depth is questionable, but I don't think either of our lines are in dire need of upgrades.
The thing that worries me the most is Mangold's back. I don't want a situation where we wind up with Woody at center and nobody to fill right tackle. The Jets should have 8 offensive linemen capable of playing at an acceptable level in the NFL. Right now they have 5.
Didn't Hunter and/or Turner play significant minutes last year and prove capable? Not to mention, Slauson has versatility to play along the line, but the downfall is he's a rookie.
Nah, if we run a prevent defense constantly without adjustments we can spread our already sub-par secondary out thin, taking some pressure off our pass-rushers; a sort of "bend-till-it-breaks" philosophy. No, wait.. we did that last year. Thanks Bob.
Pouha isn't serviceable enough to carry the Gatorade jug. Or have you forgotten last year when Jenkins got hurt/fatigued for the last 6 games, and the defense turned to shit? A back-up NT is our top need right now. You can't have your defensive lynchpin playing 3 downs every series for 16 games. Woody and Faneca are getting old, they need some decent bakups to groom. Turner looks promising though.
This may come as a shock, but 350 lb NTs that can play at that level don't grow on trees. And our defense didn't turn to shit because of Sione Pouha. It wasn't great to begin with, we just had a good run defense - and that was partly because our secondary was getting picked apart. Our offense imploded when Favre broke down and no one tried to make adjustments and that's why we lost.
Jenkins hurting and Mangini taking the scheme, throwing it out, and implementing one that no one felt comfortable with for all of december ruined the defense. But Pouha and Green need to step up. Pouha's been around long enough now that he should be a serviceable backup. The missing ingredients is a scary OLB, and one OL who can play 3 or even 4 positions on the line. Another would be a WR that secondaries need to gameplan for.
I definately think we need a back-up NT - we could even pick up a cut from someone, they haven't got to be a Pro-Bowler just serviceable. We also need back-up linemen, as we are looking very thin behind the starters. Yes, a WR would be nice but at what price? Next years draft is supposed to be good so don't start giving all our picks away.
Well I am guessing you are expecting Gholston to become the "scary" OLB, at least that should be the hope. As for a versatile OL, how about Robert Turner? Thought he did pretty well moving around.
Why in the world would we need another RB? It's the best and deepest position on the whole roster, and even behind the three-headed monster we still have Danny Woodhead and Jehuu Caulcrick who could fill in if needed
We signed Howard Green as a backup NT... hopefully he can be serviceable. We really don't know what we have as backup OL... but I have faith in our OL coach. We really need a backup NT for the future and I believe we will get a DE or NT in the first 3 rds of the draft next year. Why would we need another RB this year? With TJ, LW and SG I think we are set... plus we can keep DW as a 4th RB... I think we are pretty thin at ILB... ok we have Scott and Harris but who plays if one of them gets hurt? I really have no idea!
Realistically, our defense did look alot worse. Pouha isn't good enough to play say 10% of the time to spell Jenkins, which is what we need, not just someone who can kind of fill in if he's injured.
1- As hemi brought up Howard Green is there. Good 3-4 nose tackles do not grow on trees. We are lucky enough to have one of the best, but he does need more rest. 2 - We do need to start adding O-line depth players. The 2010 draft needs to be the place we start adding depth to key areas. 3 - These are the strengths of our team. Everyone across the lines are good or better players. You can not have all pros at every position. The Jets have built them selves very good front lines over the last few years and ahve invested a ton of Draft picks and Money in the lines. Not supprised you did not mention that though, it goes against every thing your whining about.
I think it was worse but I think there are far too many factors to point a finger at Pouha. From what I saw the guy was hit or miss. There were times where he did fill in and the defense didn't miss a step and other times you could tell he was the weak link. It's great that we brought in Green, but I expect Pouha will still see his fair share of action.
