Love the last part about Sanchez running the no huddle!! http://www.profootballtalk.com/category/rumor-mill/ Clemens: ?The Best Player Will Play? Posted by Aaron Wilson on June 11, 2009, 4:20 p.m. Although the New York Jets opened up their bank vault to give rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez a five-year contract with a maximum value of $60 million, including $28 million in guaranteed money, veteran Kellen Clemens isn?t conceding anything in the Jets? ongoing quarterback competition. One day after Sanchez was awarded the richest contract in Jets history, Clemens expressed confidence that who wins the starting job will be determined on merit, not on how much money the organization has invested. ?That is none of my business,? Clemens told reporters following today?s minicamp practice in comments distributed by the team. ?From what I have been told, and the only thing that matters in this competition, is that the best player will play. They never said that the highest paid player is going to play, but the best player is going to play. ?So, that?s how I?m going to approach it. If they change their approach, then I will change my approach. But as of now, that is where it is and we are going to continue to move forward.? Meanwhile, Clemens has decided to stick with the same agent, David Dunn, as Sanchez. ?I am excited,? Clemens said. ?His agent did a really good job for him. He is my agent, so hopefully someday . . . you know.? According to Dave Hutchinson of the Newark Star-Ledger, Sanchez put on a convincing display of his potential during today?s practice session. Per the report, Sanchez ran the no-huddle crisply and connected with wide receiver Wallace Wright for a touchdown by delivering a tight spiral into a tight space. ?Wow, what a day,? Jets coach Rex Ryan gushed to reporters. ?It was neat to see. That last drive. It was fun to watch.? Added Sanchez: ?It felt good. I really just let myself go. And the stuff with what coach Ryan was saying with my cadence and voice inflections. I just let it out. Hey, it?s the last day of camp. Have fun. Be yourself. Play like you did in college and throw it around.? Clemens reportedly got limited work in full-team drills, but Ryan said the competition is a close one. And Ryan stressed that it will be determined by performance, not by money. ?This is working exactly how you would what it to work, where not that it?s a slam dunk one way or the other,? Ryan said. ?It?s a great competition because both of them have really looked good. . . . ?I understand it with [Sanchez] getting the money, but my job as coach is play the best guy. I?m judged on wins and losses. One thing I say is the guy is going to have to earn that job.?
haha... we'll likely never have to live to see Clemens-time... Keep dreaming Kellen... maybe you will find a rainbow and a pot of gold somewhere, but it won't be in NY.
Of course they're going to say it's an open competition. But will it be an open competition? Absolutely not. The fact of the matter is that this organization invested way too much in Sanchez to have him play second fiddle to an unproven career backup. Unfortunate situation for Kellen, but business is business.
if they play him because his contract dictates he plays now, and he isn't ready - he's fucked for the rest of his career and then the complaining will be "why did he play so early? I'd rather take the cap hit to see him succeed" It would also take the power out of Ryan's hands if that happened, and he doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would let that happen with his roster.
The player they think will give them the best shot will be the starter. I'm sure Sanchez has an edge but I doubt our FO and CS have their heads so far up their asses that they'd start the worse of the two just because they already gave him a fat contract.
it sucks. as much as i want kellen to do good i want sanchez to do even better. if he is ready id like to see sanchez as our starting qb in houston. but i hope things work out for kellen somewhere else. maybe some nfc team we wont have to play very often.
I think Sanchez ends up starting opening day. Not because of the money but it seems that the front office has 0 faith in this guy. They traded for Favre last year, and then draft Sanchez this year. It seems obvious that they have no confidence in him as they keeping looking elsewhere for a QB. I'm not a Clemens fan but you gotta feel bad for the guy. If not with us, I hope he gets his shot.
the fact that competition is already close is a tell tale sign. clemens is nothing more than a backup. after only a few weeks sanchez is already comparable to clemens. he hasn't even gone through training camp yet. by that time sanchez will be light years ahead of clemens.
Oh, I'm so sorry... was I a bit early on the "shit on former Jets players" bit? Oh, I'm supposed to wait for them to leave then treat them like dirt. Right... my bad.
Sanchez>>>>>> At this point Clemens is just trying to keep his head up and hope for a shot at the starting job elsewhere...He should get that chance cuz he never really did here
I don't know about that, the league is different now, I think you get better experience actually being in the game, good or bad...
Clemens and Sanchez will se roughly the same amount of playing time in the preseason games... If Sanchez sucks or Clemens really shines he will start the first games... if they are equal prob Sanchez will get the nod.
All you have to do is read Ryan's quotes carefully, and I think its pretty obvious that Sanchez is Ryan's guy and that ship has sailed already. Barring an injury or big time collapse by him, Sanchez will be the starter. The "competition" is a crock of shit. Clemens will finish out his contract and get out of Dodge. I seriously doubt he would remain here as a backup, even if it were offered, unless there is zero interest in him across the league.
It comes down Sanchez being able to handle live pressure. If he can he will start if he can't Clemens will start. This idea that their is a competition in none contact practice is nuts.
