Fran Tarkenton will not be welcoming Brett Favre to Minnesota

    By MJD

I'm sure there are a lot of Vikings fans out there who would love to see Brett Favre put on the purple and yellow, but Fran Tarkenton isn't one of them. If it does eventually happen, you won't see Tarkenton showing up at Favre's door in Minnesota with a freshly-baked apple pie to welcome him.

Tarkenton was on 790 the Zone in Atlanta yesterday and talked about the Brett Favre's "I'm retired, wait, no I'm not" bit.

“I think it’s despicable. What he put the Packers through last year was not good. Here’s an organization that was loyal to him for 17, 18 years, provided stability of organization, provided players. It just wasn’t about Brett Favre. In this day and time, we have glorified the Brett Favre’s of the world so much, they think it’s about them. He goes to New York and bombs. He’s 39 years old. How would you like Ray Nitschke in his last year (playing for) the Vikings, or I retire, and go play for the Packers. I kind of hope it happens, so he can fail.”

Wow. That's a Limbaugh-on-Obama level of hatred right there. And Tarkenton wasn't much more complimentary of Favre as a football player, either.

“I think he has been a great flamboyant quarterback, but he has made more stupid plays than any great quarterback that I’ve ever seen. Look at his final game in a Packers uniform. He blew that game against the Giants. He’s playing against Eli Manning(notes), I love Eli Manning, but he’s still not a great quarterback. He’s not Peyton yet, or Tom Brady(notes). He’s just a guy. And they’re (Packers) are playing at home, and they’re in a tight situation, they went to overtime and he (Favre) throws the interception that allows them (the Giants) to come back and win the game. He has done that and driven his coaches crazy all of his career.”

That is shocking. It's not shocking necessarily that Tarkenton has those opinions, but I thought there was some kind of rule that prohibited people from ever going on television or radio unless they had an unbridled love of Brett Favre. It's somewhat refreshing to hear, and not just because I happen to agree.

If Favre does end up in a Vikings uniform in '09, I hope Tarkenton also unretires for just one game to go back into the Monday Night Football booth. That would be fun.

Hahahah NICE. He trashes Eli as well in the process, and I agree with everything he said. 100%.

Everything he said is dead on true. I share Fran's hope that Favre plays for the Vikings so he can further tarnish his legacy and alienate his beloved Packer fanbase.

Yeah I was thinking about ol' BF yesterday.

Everything that went wrong in Green Bay, EVERYTHING, is his fault. He loved being coy with the media "I don't know how much longer I'm gonna play, maybe two years, maybe five" so what do the Packers do? They snatch up Aaron Rodgers after he plummets.

Favre is inexplicably furious. What the fuck do you expect them to do?! If Favre had said, "Hey, I'm going to play for five more years," then NO WAY do the Packers draft Rodgers.

I am officially off the Favre fan wagon after this off-season. He is equally as self-centered as Terrell Owens, but he is not as good at his position as Terrell Owens. This man absolutely ruined his legacy.

The ironic thing about this is that a non-Super Bowl winning QB is trashing two Super Bowl winning QB's.

Wow, what a great, cheeseball show that was. Somehow every other week they uncovered yet another person "Humanly combusting". I remember one unfortunate guy that just 'exploded' and destroyed himself and his trailer...

This is a Pro Football Hall of Fame and College Football Hall of Fame quarterback trashing two quarterbacks, of whom neither will make it into both.

I hear ya on that. When Fran left the game, he had many records with him. He's one for the ages. I would choose Fran in his prime any day over Farve or Eli.

Favre not in the hall of fame. You really are joking right? The guy is a 1st ballot hall of famer. I want some of what you are smoking.

Shure fran was a good qb but at the end of the day 4 count them 4 SB loses.
Eli and Brett have him 2 to nothing in only 3 tries. fran is just pissed that he choked 4 times and here are these two punks each one with a ring. Something fran can only dream of. I do agree with what he said though.
    BTW :bills_suck:

Dude, you can't read. I said neither Brett nor Eli will make it into both Halls of Fame.

    Lighten up and READ.

Just learned Fran has a book coming out. So it turns out the quintessential "me" quarterback of hte '70s -- who NEVER accepts invites to Vikings games or alumni events, or even has talked about the team in decades -- has suddenly become "Viking fan Fran" coincidentally on the eve of his new book coming out. Fran Tarkenton laying on Brett Favre for his conduct, in order to boost his own name recognition for his book sales. Priceless.

I'm guessing you never actually saw Tarkenton play?
