Inside Out: Shaun Ellis Posted on May 27th, 2009 - by Bassett > http://www.thejetsblog.com/2009/05/27/inside-out-shaun-ellis/
I was always a big fan of Shaun Ellis, so ultimately I'm glad he's returned. But at some point we need to address the DE position.
Let's see how Ellis and Douglas do this year. If Ellis was making a million a year we'd think we had the most underpaid player in football at LDE right now. The salary numbers have a huge effect on how he is perceived, and realistically that's a crazy way to look at his value. He's a good 3-4 LDE. Maybe not quite in the top echelon but very good. The other side and the outside linebackers have always been the weakness in the Jet's 3-4. Well, and the pre-Jenkins NT situation also.
That's true that Ellis has always been solid. I guess I get frustrated when I see him not able to get off blocks at times. But he's always been very reliable and I'd like to see him finish his career here (now that this offseason is over)
The 3-4 LDE often has trouble getting off of blocks. He has a tackle and a guard on him on off-tackle plays his direction and the tightend and tackle on him on sweeps. When he's pass rushing he usually has a guard and tackle on him or gets chipped by the tightend before he releases and then has to deal with the tackle. They don't call it the strongside end for nothing, the tightend lining up on that side makes life very busy over there. The two linemen in the 3-4 who routinely see double-teams are the NT and the LDE. The RDE gets doubled on plays to his side, but there are fewer plays that way.
He always comes up big in big situations, though. If Shaun Ellis is anything, then he is the definition of clutch - And considering that he's not bad at all the rest of the time, that can be pretty huge.
His biggest being the sack against the Patriots in 2006! I missed that entire game back my satellite was out but I listened to it on the radio! What a great game!
He gets pressure on 3rd downs and in 4th quarters pretty often. Another guy who came up with pressure when it mattered (though not as many sacks) was C.J. Mosley. Shame he's not with the Jets anymore.
word. brady sitting in the mud at the end of the game with ellis standing over him has given ellis a namath like glow.
Ellis got 8 sacks in a 3-4 last year. I don't understand how people could hate on him. I think he is taken for granted by many jet fans. I am curious to see how this Marques Douglas works out. I hope he brings something to the table. We shall see
He also had a great play last year against the Bills game where he returned the fumble (caused by Elam's sack) for a TD. He has made some great plays for us, and he is the longest, by far, tenured Jet on the team. I think the reason why some people don't like him is that Jet fans usually start to hate players more and more each season they are on the Jets. This happened with Pennington, Coles, Barton etc. I think some people think that "Well this player has been with us for 8 years and we haven't won anything, so it must be their fault."
We definitely need much better depth on the DL. Ellis has been a steady performer if not a top talent, and he can be versatile. I don't get the hate from people on Ellis, except for the certain few that hate him because he got the contract that John Abraham turned down.
Me either. It's usually the guy that's clamoring for our 3-4 DE's to put up double digit sacks though, so, you know. Big Cat is getting up there though. We still haven't drafted a 3-4 DE since switching back to the 3-4 in '06.
He is a solid player. Has always been underrated, pretty durable and a team leader. No reason to want him gone, but it is time to groom a replacement in the near future.
