I spent some time with the Jets this week, and I came away thinking about where that team is headed. Coach Rex Ryan has an infectious attitude. When you talk to him and you?re around it, it?s palpable and it?s real. I think the players feel it, too. I think the Jets are having fun playing for Ryan already.

With Ryan, it?s his defense, it?s his style. There?s nothing between Ryan and football that gets in the way. Nothing. I think the players feel it. I think the players see him as the smartest guy in the room, and they know he can help them win football games.

There were a lot of guys flying around yesterday at OTAs. Here?s an example of a guy who I think can make a mark on this team under Ryan, although he has been in the league for several years and hasn?t done much. Defensive back Ahmad Carroll was the 25th overall pick by the Packers in 2004. He basically wore out his welcome in both Green Bay and Jacksonville. Carroll is going to be the nickel defender for the Jets and will cover slot receivers.

Carroll has tremendous talent, as well as some shortcomings. But I watched Ryan love this kid and pat him on the back. Ryan will find a place for Carroll and then just let him settle into his defensive role. He can be a productive player, including on special teams. That?s Ryan.

One thing Ryan told me was that he had an idea of which coaches he wanted to go after from Eric Mangini?s staff that might be available. There were a couple of guys from that staff that he couldn?t believe he was able to interview and keep ? Bill Callahan on the offensive line and Brian Schottenheimer as a the play-caller will bring a lot of continuity on offense. Additionally, Mike Westhoff remains as the special teams coach. Those three assistants will provide a familiarity in two major areas of the team where guys won?t have to learn new schemes. I think that?s important.

I talked with Alan Faneca a bit about the differences between Mangini and Ryan. I have a great deal of respect for Faneca. I think he has been the best and most consistent guard in football for years. I don?t think anyone else is close to him. He didn?t take shots at Mangini ? in fact, no one did ? but what I?m told is that Ryan is a fun guy to be around and is going to be fun to play football for.

I think guys will run through walls to play for Ryan, like the way they did for his dad in Philadelphia and Chicago.

i'm not a big proponent of thinking guys like Carroll magically become decent players, but there have been those types of cases before in the history of sports.

If it happens in this case - good for him, and good job by Ryan.

This team will have passion, and I hope it transcends this team into a 4th quarter team. They haven't been one recently.

Game Management will be the key in this division.
The Patriots won't be giving too many away and I doubt if the Dolphins will either
So if he can know when to pull out that red flag and make sure we have time outs for a final drive then we might have something.

The thing about Ryan is that he will mold his scheme to fit his players strengths, that way his players can show their true talent, so players that may have been in the shadows under other teams and coaches may stand out while under Ryan. Mangini was asking Gholston to do things he hasn't done and expected him to thrive. Ryan wont do that, he will let him play to his strengths while grooming his weaknesses.

Great players coach who listens and guides the players and makes them feel comfortable mentally and on the field making plays to suit his players styles. An he has one of the best defensive schemes in his 3-4 he made a huge impact once we signed him , now its time to execute them as a head coach and with a dark franchise with terrible luck rise from the shaolin slumz (or jersey for that matter).

Carroll will be our nickel-back? Why did we sign Strickland then?
Aside from that I'm a big believer in Rex style of work... Having him will help turn the mentality of this football team around!

For depth. Carroll, Lowery, Coleman, and Strickland will be battling for the 3rd and 4th cornerback spots. May the best men win!

because there is a lot of bleeding at this position. too much depth ins't a bad thing.

"I don’t think anyone else is close to him. He didn’t take shots at Mangini – in fact, no one did"

I was a little surprised that after Mangini left no one really said anything about him and several free agents followed him. Elam had to give his consent to the Sanchez trade and he did, which shows he's happy to play for Mangini. I know that Rob Ryan now works for Mangini and than means Rex doesn't want any trouble, but when you put it all together Mangini must be more likable in person than he is in on tv.

when all the networks do is show a coach looking mad, chewing gum, its going to make it look like thats all he does.

He actually has a dry sense of humor that would be perfect for a family BBQ... Uncle Eric, the football coach.

I think players want to play for whoever wants them most. It's only logical.

Leicester, last I read a blocking sled got the better of Vernon in a special teams drill. Not a good sign.

I think it'll probably take more than a few OTAs to determine something like that.

OR he knows that he's gonna start in cleveland and here he would have been a backup. that could be a big reason for his blessing of the trade too, more so then mangini's likability I would think.
