I didnt say it wasnt an important position, it is, consensus #2 on the OL, but i dont think it was of the 5 most important positions on a team. That said I am very happy we have Mangold, whether he is top at his position or not. But based on average salary and draft position, Center is not treated as an elite position. yes its important and all, but you can make an argument that any position is also just as important if not more so than Center.
John Schmitt Joe Fields Jim Sweeney Kevin Mawae Nick Mangold All were very good. It has been a position like WR where we have been pretty lucky. Now hopefully we have solved the QB issue.
Okay. I disagree though. I think that Center is by far the most important position on the OL. But you're right though, it's definitely not the glamour position.
C and LT both have unique responsibilities that make them both very important to an offense. You can not underestimate the importance of either. The C is the one position Jets' fans haven't had to worry about for a very long time..
He is the 2nd most important player on the offense and maybe the team. Only the QB might touch the ball as many times in the game. Plus he will keep Sanchez safe.
As my favorite player on the Jets, I am very happy for Nick that he gets the recognition. The mention included acknowledgement of his sturdiness. He's gotten banged up a few times, but he always gets up and plays. Very solid. He doesn't get out on the blocks quite as well as Mawae used to, but there's really nothing else to say bad about him. Solid and effective. He's a great player.
Exactly...I also find it funny and ironic that the writer says he doesn't overwhelm with physical tools and then goes on to write that the guy behind him at #2 on this list is 6'4 and very long. Well Mangold is 6'4 also.
While LT and QB are more important positions, Mangold is arguably the best player on the team right now. If we are going to give Leon Washingotn anything near $6 mil per year we better make sure we have Mangold's money set aside before we even think about making that deal. Mangold absolutely must spend his entire career in a Jets uniform.
In regards to the importance of the left tackle... I always thought it was THE most important position on the field. (Big Blind Side fan). When Jerry Reese came in, he dumped Petitgout, kicked over Diehl and said "the importance of the left tackle is overrated." Idiot. Every time I drove past the UAlbany campus that summer, I screamed "Four and twelve!!! Four and twelve!!!" at the droves of Giants fans. I sure told them... :shit:
Wow! And I thought I was pretty high on him! He does have two years left on his contract, you know. I can see extending it if the Jets get well into the season and the cash is available, but ... right now? Doesn't make a lot of business sense.
