Why I feel Jerricho Cotchery can be productive as a #1 WR. He's only 26 of age and he's also full of talent and potential. I think he can be much better than Coles was as our #1 WR for years to come. I know that college stats mean pretty much nothing when it comes down to being an elite talent @ the NFL level, but lets not forget that Cotchery broke just about each and every record set by Tory Holt while playing with Philip Rivers at NC State. Everyone wants this 6'6, 4.34 type of 40 time from a #1 WR and the only thing thats good for is being a deep threat type of WR. I would take a player like Jericho Cotchery as my #1 WR any day of the week and twice on Sundays. Everyone would love a speed burning, deep threat type of #1 WR but you know what? A solid possession WR who's tough as nails, strong enough to push off the bump and run while being able to make the tough catch over the middle is 10 times more important for the success of a young QB such as Mark Sanchez. This kid has amazing hands and can move the chains with 1st down after 1st down each and every Sunday. Cotchery is far from a small WR and he's also much faster than his 40 time. I'm not just being a homer here...Cotchery has been a starter for 3 years and over past 3 years, he's gained NFL talent, experience along with a confidence that can take him to the next level. Over the past 3 years, he's wracked up 235 catches, 2949 yards along with 13 TD's and lets not forget that he's put up these types of numbers as a #2 option, has had to work with three different QB's (Chad, Kellen, Favre) and has came through and came up big for each and every one of them. Find me one 26 year old that can match that, don't even think about saying Braylon Edwards who's also 26. Why are we looking for something that we ALREADY have? I'll never understand. Cotchery has only lined up as the Jets #1 WR 5 times as a starter and thats because Coles has only missed 5 games over the past 3 years, that was back in 2007. (We had no O-Line, no rushing attack and a backup QB in Kellen Clemens). Cotchery was our #1 WR for 5 weeks there in 2007. Lets not forget that he was only a 2nd year starter and was still learning on the fly and you know what? He was productive. Since then, he's gained another year of experience and because of that, he now knows what it takes to be a #1 WR. During those 5 weeks as our #1 WR...He wracked up 29 receptions, 414 yards, longs of 39, 31 and 48. He only had 1 TD but you all have to understand the situation back in 2007...Kellen Clemens only threw 5 TD's with 10 INT's there in 2007. We cant blame that on Cotchery. All in all...In 5 weeks, he had an average of about 6 catches per game for 82.8 yards per game. Put up those numbers over a 16 game season and guess what? A WR would end up with these types of numbers... 96 catches for 1324 yards. Impressive right? Put it this way. Kellen Clemens threw for 1,529 yards there in 2007. Guess how many yards Cotchery had? 1,130. Enough said. Coles only had 646 recieving yards back in 07. Cotchery has what it takes to man our #1 WR position and something tells me that he can put up monster numbers as the #1 option for Mark Sanchez.
You bring up some good points, but I still think that a deep threat will help our team more because it definitely opens up a lot of the running game.
Why I feel Jerricho Cotchery cannot be productive as a #1 WR: Did you watch him when Coles was not in games? Nothing happened.
Speed is very important for a #1 WR. You don't just need great speed to burn opposing defenses deep; you need it to consistently beat double coverage as well as force the defense to roll coverages towards you. A true #1 WR makes the rest of the WR corps better by allowing them to only have to deal with single coverage. I think Cotch is a great WR, he has great hands, beats press coverage consistently, and fights for YAC. I just don't think he is fast & athletic enough to be the type of #1 WR that can elevate the level of play of his supporting cast.
David Clowney is a great deep threat. Jericho Cotchery made his break out year during 2006, I believe that was his 3rd year in the league. This will be Clowney's 2nd year and from the looks of it, he's the deep threat we need as our #2 WR opposite of Cotchery. Cotchery was an unknown in the same types of ways the Clowney is an unknown as of right now. But I'm not worried about our passing attack here in 2009 and I'll tell you why. We have a top 5 O-Line led by Ferguson, Faneca and Mangold. Say what you say about D'Brickishaw Ferguson, but this kid is a real talent and I'm glad to say that he's our Franchise LT. Ferguson has started each and every game since being drafted and as we all know, the LT position is just about the hardest position to find elite talent. Just the fact that Ferguson has started every game over the past 3 years is a positive because most LT's dont even start until their 3rd or 4th year. It feels like Alan Faneca is 40 years old, but he's not, he's only 31 years of age and if you ask me...The Steelers made a mistake letting this man go. He's a future HOF player and still one of the best run blockers in the game today. Faneca was a huge reason why Thomas Jones set an all time Jets rushing record for most TD's in a single season after only scoring 1 TD the year before. We also have one of the best centers in the game today and he's only what? 25 years of age? Insane. When we lost Kevin Mawae, I was really upset because I never thought we would have an elite Center running the show, I was wrong. Will I call him the best center in the game? Not yet but you know what? He's a top 5 talent and thats for sure. Just ask Vince Wilfork what he thinks about Nick Mangold. Brandon Moore is also the most underrated Jet I've ever seen. He was a first year starter as our RG back in 2004 and guess who rushed for the most yards that year? Curtis Martin. He was our starting RG last year and guess who led the AFC in rushing yards? Thomas Jones. He's a really solid run blocker and as a Jets fan, we are lucky we got this man signed this offseason. We all remember that disaster year of 2007, we all remember JAGS such as Anthony Clement and Will Montgomery but guess who's still here? Brandon Moore. Damien Woody...I still dont know much about this guy, but I do know one thing, he's a boat load better than Anthony Clement could ever dream of being as our starting RT. He's also a veteran leader who's started on a Patriots SB winning team back in 2001 so I cant complain about Woody. All in all, we have a top 5 O-Line here in 2009. We also have a top 5 rushing attack with Thomas Jones as our work horse, Leon Washington as our 3rd down/change of pace type of play maker and we also have Shonn Greene who will improve this backfield like never before. Shonn Greene will be one hell of a back down in the red zone and something tells me that he will be a tough Goal Line back. -Only back in the Nation with 100+ yards in each and every game last year for Iowa. He also had two games with 140+ yards, two games with 150+ yards and ANOTHER two games with 200+ yards. -Over 1800 yards to go along with 20 TD's as a first year starter for Iowa last year. -Was voted the team MVP of Iowa's bowl game. He was their whole offense. -He rushed the ball 307 times last year with zero fumbles to go along with an average of 6.0 yards per carry. -Won the "Doak Walker" Award which goes to the best overall running back each and every year. McFadden won it the past two years and Reggie Bush won it the year before. Those RB's were amazing talents and I loved em as a college fan but I won't lie, they WERE gimmick types of backs. Shonn Greene? Not so much. This kid is a no B.S type of power back who hits the hole ASAP. He's a Northeast type of power back but he's not a slug-He has exciting speed. How did this kid drop the the 3rd round? I'll never understand, he's only 23. These are the reasons why I'm not worried about our passing attack here in 2009. Not only do we have a top 5 O-Line along with a talented back field, but we also have an Antonio Gates type of pass catching talent in Dustin Keller and as we all know, a pass catching talent can be and should be a young QB's best friend. Just ask Tony Romo, Philip Rivers and Joe Flacco what TE's such as Witten, Gates and Heap has done for their careers. Mark Sanchez has that O-Line. Mark Sanchez has that rushing attack. Mark Sanchez has that #1 WR in Jericho Cotchery Mark Sanchez has that slot WR in Chansi Stuckey Mark Sanchez has that pass catching threat in Dustin Keller And who knows? Mark Sanchez may just have that deep threat in David Clowney but you know what? If Clowney cant step up, maybe Marcus Henry can and if not...Now that we have our potential Franchise QB, we can always draft a talented WR with our first round pick during next years draft.
Nothing happened? He was only a 2nd year player back in 2007 when Coles missed 5 games. And he was productive. He also had a career backup throwing him the ball in Kellen Clemens (1st year starter) During those 5 weeks as our #1 WR...He wracked up 29 receptions, 414 yards, longs of 39, 31 and 48. Thats an average of about 6 catches per game for 82.8 yards per game. Put up those #'s over a 16 game season and guess what? His numbers would look something like this, "96 catches for 1324 yards", is that doing "Nothing"?
Sorry, I forgot that his first name had two R's instead of 1. I was only going by the name on the back of my Jets jersey. Sorry, I don't know his DOB, SSC # or time of birth either.
you'll learn about this guy quickly... If I cared enough, i'd go get the same posts from multiple threads. He says the same thing every day on here, he was banned a while ago, and just got unbanned. He comes back with the same shit.... just ignore him. Its better for the board as a community if we all pretend he's not here... also, search for the picture of him wearing a Zach Thomas jersey.
Same thing over and over? Since when have I talked about Shonn Greene? Since when have I talked about Mark Sanchez?
The Colts have been one of the most successful offenses in the league over the past few years, yes they have Peyton Manning but his receivers have always been possession/cotchery like guys. (Wayne/Anthony Gonzalez/pass-catching TE in Dallas Clark(our keller)
