If there was no salary cap, where would the jets organization rank with having money among other teams?? How would they fair against a cowboys organization with jerry jones and there large cash flow? Basically what im saying is what would be the top 5 teams which would have the most money to spend on free agency if the cap were to be banished?? Where would the cowboys and jets be?? Maybe list a top 5?? Also what is the situation with the cap for next year?? Whats going on with that?

Unfortunately this could happen if the CBA is allowed to expire. My bet would be the top 3 would be Dallas, Washington and Oakland. I could see a team like Atlanta with an owner in Arthur Blank who wants to win being in the next tier.

There has to be parity in the league. That's what makes it so great. If the CBA expired, the NFL would quickly evolve to the haves vs. the have nots. At times it would resemble arena football and something, for me, would be lost.

The owners have already opted out so in effect it has already expired.

The real problem here is that half the teams are having trouble being able to pay the minimum of the current cap. Without any cap I'm not sure what would happen. Some might just fold. For that reason alone I think there will be a new agreement before there is ever a year without a cap.

I feel like Woody Johnson would be a good owner to have if there was no salary cap. However, I really hope that a salary cap remains in place because we don't want the NFL to turn out like the MLB. Maybe there should be a limit on how much money you can spend in FA and place a different limit on the amount you can spend to sign draft picks and resign players already on your team

How would the jets owner fair in being able to keep up with dallas and oakland if there was no cap?

Actually I think it depends, pre-new stadium I'd guess that we would only be in the middle of the league, post stadium easily in the top 5.

This is like the 3rd or 4th no salary cap scare of my 12 years of being a fan of football. Its always this panic about the bargaining agreement and the media goes into what ifs for hours about the possibility of no salary cap...and then once again a new agreement is made and there is another salary cap deal. I wish these stupid discussions would stop until the threat of no salary cap was very likely.

With woody at the helm I'd say about 30th in the league.

CBA has to exist for the sake of the league.

Do you know what happens without it? Don't look any further than the soccer leagues in Europe. Man Utd, Real Madrid, Barcelona, etc etc - the haves - always, ALWAYS have more than enough money to snatch that ace player from the smaller teams. And they get richer as the season goes on too. The poor teams always fight to avoid the relegation season after season. Case in point, the premier league has been won by 4 teams only so far (Blackburne, by stroke of luck, Arsenal, Chelsea and Man Utd) If you consider there are 20 teams in the top league, you will easily see there is no such thing as parity in that league. Teams with lots of money + massive fan base always win. That's NOT what you want to see from professional sports, friends.

We would get Isiah Thomas to run the team and go on a wild spending spree.

Actually when Blackburn won it they were still owned directly by Jack Walker who was one of the richest guys in the UK at the time and who sanctioned buying players like Alan Shearer at that point the most epxensive signing in the premiership.

Having the ability to buy success in sports absolutely sucks - my interest in football (soccer) is near 0 because of it.

Woody has a debt to service on the purchase of the Jets and a new stadium that is still not completely paid for which is also based on loans. He has gone out of his way the last two seasons to try to spend money to make money on the PSL sales. His ability to continue to do that really depends on the PSL sales. If the Jets sell out the building then we'd be a player in an uncapped free agency year. If we have trouble in this economy, which seems at least moderately likely, odds are we would not be a player in the market.

The real question is what happens to the draft in a non-CBA year? The draft exists at the moment in its present form as a result of collective bargaining. If no collective bargain is in place then the teams are free to change the rules of the draft as they see fit and the players are free to take them to court on anti-trust issues evolving from the draft. It's quite possible that there is no draft after a court challenge on anti-trust issues. That would make all college players coming out a free agent and the veteran free agency market would go straight to the back burner in the talent grab.

No salary cap is not as crazy as everybody seems to think. The NFL has rules in place for it. Certain teams get more Franchise Tag options. I think it's something like, if you miss the Playoffs, you get 3 Tags, if you make the playoffs, you don't get any. There are all sorts of crazy things in place to control the havoc. So it won't be a situation where the rich just get richer.

Teams that make the playoffs this year will be restricted by special rules in their pursuit of free agents in an uncapped year. So if Rex is as good as he thinks he is the Jets won't be able to take advantage of an uncapped year.
