I never create new threads, but just wanted to share this... Per the famous trade value chart: #5 = 1700 #17 = 950 #52 = 380 Meaning, after we give Cleveland our first and second round picks, we still have to make up 370 to move up to #5. The question then is, how much value do you assign to Ratliff, Elam & Coleman? If they were all valued to be worth the first pick in the 4th round (97 overall) that would total 336 points for all three players (the 97th pick is worth 112). What does it all mean? Unless you think the average value of Ratliff, Elam & Coleman is in the 3rd round range or higher - the Jets pulled off a great trade. I believe Ratliff is 5-6th round value, Coleman 4-5th round value and Elam 4-5th round value. What do you think?
Nice post...was gonna do something similar, but you nailed it. I do think Coleman may be worth a 3rd or a little more considering all the 3-4 teams now, but he was overpaid anyway.
I should say that my round value for the 3 former Jets were all super conservative. I agree - last night if we traded any of these guys I wouldn't have been surprised if we got a 6th round pick for each. Just furthering the point that Mr. T got a tremendous deal. The only catch? The Jets now have to pay a #5 draftee. Nobody wants to do that.
i was never impressed with coleman. there are a million like him out there. i was actually worried it was drew coleman when i saw 'coleman' listed as part of the deal. elam is actually a guy i liked a lot. he doesn't have a ton of 'tools' but he is a heady player. always around the ball. but i'm not too fussed losing him...assuming sanchez pans out. losing those three will actually help out the cap a bit i guess...
It's not a case of what they are worth on the open market, it's a case of what they meant to the Jets. Coleman due to depth purposes meant a lot more to the Jets than he did to a team on the open market. That draft value chart is stagnant and is really outdated, it doesn't give a just analyse of what is happening. That's also not the only catch, nobody knows what we have with Clemens, we now have to find a starting DE, and we are another pick short. Like i have said, I'm not completely against this deal now, but you have to look a little bit deeper to see it's lasting effect.
Coleman worth a 3rd?! Are you kidding.... He doesn't command a 6th by himself. Ratliff has upside and Elam hits hard and makes plays, they had some value but Coleman was pure filler and he's 30.
Coleman was not a filler...he was our starting DE. I'm not saying he's great, but he was worth at least what a 3rd is to us if not a little more. Please see RevisCB's most excellent post for further clarification:
Ratliff is worthless in that draft chart. What team would even give up a 7th round pick (besides Mangini) for a Undrafted FA QB that only played in 3rd quarter of the preseason... You can find that kind of player in this years Undrafted FA QB pool. Coleman, is a late rounder at best. So is Elam. I can't imagine any teams giving up anything higher, maybe a 6th rounder at best. 5th for Coleman, tops... 4th, 5th average for these players is like 3 first rounder average for Cutler and Cassel.
