...not playing style, but was the Giants situation 'similar' in terms of where they were in the draft when they traded 'way up' to get 'lil manning?

How does what the g-girls did to get manning compare to what we're 'thinking about' doing to maybe get sanchez?

don't compare manning to sanchez, just compare the draft situation.

    thanks.

The Giants drafted Rivers, not Manning...Zero comparison.

Yeah, I don't see the similarity at all.

The Giants fell completely in love with the Manning name pedigree and traded a ridiculous amount to obtain it even with 2 other legit high level 1st round QBs falling to them. In this draft there are only 2 QBs with a high 1st round grade. If we were to trade up it would be because we don't want the next guy after the huge dropoff after the top 2, huge difference in terms of situations.

The draft situation was the Giants were close to Manning, but were almost guaranteed not to get him. There was a TON of back and forth and it appeared as though nothing was going to happen on the eve of the draft. The Giants then made a surprise move by giving up Rivers (whom they drafted) for Manning in addition to their 3rd, next year's 1st, and that year's 5th.

The Giants got the QB they valued the most. The Chargers got the QB they valued as the most. I ultimately think this deal benefited both organizations greatly. The Giants kept Osi (SD had requested him) and had the cap space to sign the free agents Kareem McKenzie, Antonio Pierce, and Plaxico Burress thanks to their lack of draft picks. The Chargers drafted Merriman & Kaeding with those draft picks.

For the longest time, while Eli was struggling, it was popular to say that Chargers fleeced the Giants in that deal. Now I think people are starting to see how well it worked out for both teams. For the record, I've been saying since the 2005 season it worked out well for both teams.

    Okay, rant over.

...and their draft situations aren't that similar. Eli had a better collegiate career than Sanchez and was considered much more of a "can't-miss" prospect.

the reason i posted this is because we are here saying it would cost us too much in terms of draft picks to move up for sanchez and i remembered the giants gave up a ton to get manning.

what would it take for us to move up from 17 to get sanchez, and how does that compare to what the g-girls gave up to get manning. i think that is a fair question

This year's first and the one for next year as well. Probably also a 3rd round pick this year and a 4th next. The point difference between pick #17 and #3 or so is pretty intense.

I will also add that the Giants were not one player away nor did they have the vaunted defense of 07 when they pulled this trade off for their franchise QB. And they had a new coach. they went 6-10 in Mannings rookie year, then made the playoffs and won division titles and SB after that rookie year.

not a bad team to follow philosophically.

We just have to hope Sanchez gets past the Browns, if he does we can get him without giving up as much as the Giants gave up for Manning. I'll be fine with any trade up for Sanchez as long as it doesn't involve next years picks. This draft isn't very good, next years is going to be great, I'm more then willing to sacrifice picks in this draft to get an elite QB prospect.

I think the Giants were 4th and they gave up an extraordinary amount to move up 3 spots. had the fluke of 2007 not happened that trade would have gone down as one of the worst in history BUT since they won the SB giant fans cannot complain anymore. Even if Eli never does another thing in this league the trade was worth it b/c they won a SB.
