The only time I can see us taking Pettigrew would be if everyone was gone, and it came down to him or Tyson Jackson.

Otherwise, I would totally hate this pick especially if Moreno, DHB and even Beans are still available.

TE in the later rounds, please.

My overall problem with this pick at 17 is I'm pissed that Baker is gone and wound up with the Patriots, of all teams. IMO he was a decent TE and if still here, we wouldn't be "wasting" this 1st Round pick on his replacement.

If only he had found another freaking parking spot for that Bentley...

Yeah but Pettigrew isn't the ONLY player we are interested in... if someone gets him before we do we probably will be able to select a very good WR at #21...

He's not that much of a legit pass catching threat. He's really just a guy who is capable of making plays in the passing game. His value to us would mostly be as the blocking TE.

This is the one pick I've heard projected at #17 for the Jets that would piss me off. We just need a TE that can block well with average hands. #17 is too much to spend on that IMO.

I hope we don't get him with the first. Value pick in the second if he's available, else, no. TE is not the most glaring need right now. Blocking TE can be found late on first day or early second day.

Someone a while back on TGG threw out a stat about Pettigrew, which was something like 9 (maybe even less...7) redzone TD's in his 4 years at Oklahoma State. That's not impressive numbers for a TE we consider will become our huge red zone target.

I wouldn't be upset if he was the pick at 17, everything I read looks good. An excellent blocker (we need a blocking TE) with great hands as well.

This has been my pick since January. If we wanna run things like Rex is envisioning, this is the best pick on the board.

Not to mention we have basically no TE's right now. They were lining up defensive players at TE during TC.

I agree. I've thought about Pettigrew for awhile now. If you look at the stats for the last 2 years (no link or paste. please reference NFL.com), our 3rd WR [32 vs. 32] and TE catches [48 vs. 41] have been surprisingly similar. If we take Coles' receptions for 2008 [70] and feature Leon on those downs, Leon would have practically half of the rushing attempts that Jones [290] did this past season. Hence the focus on the running game, and a theoretical reduction in interceptions, and utilizing Leon like we should have been. We would need a blocking TE to pull this off, and Pettigrew fits the bill. Our draft day strategy is still open because the Jets don't want to draft Pettigrew that high, and still need another speed rusher [defensive end and or outside linebacker]. IF we can pull it off, we might be able to get Cushing and Pettigrew with our first 2 picks.

I believe that that is the goal: See which pass rusher drops to us, and if we can still get Pettigrew by trading down our 1st round [or trading up our 2nd].

I'm excited about this season because it would appear that Ryan has looked at all of our games and saw this:

Jets need an improved third level. Let me improve it and add one of mine to help speed this up.
Jets need a new attitude at the second level. Let me improve it and add one of mine to help speed this up.
Jets need depth at the first level. Let me improve it and add one of mine to help speed this up.

Hmmmnnnn.....A fresher Jets defensive line, new scheme, and position upgrades would have won some of the games they should have won last year. A focus on the running game would limit the interceptions and allow Clemens [Ratliff; Ainge] more time to develop under center. Besides the fact that we need to see what we have at Quarterback and at Reciever. If neither positions work out, we can target a Quarterback and Receiver combination next season because we can evaluate 2 of our quarterbacks during a 16 game season [8 and 8 games a piece].

Baker knew the offense, but was a receiving tight end. The Jets need a pass rush to beat New England or Indy. We also need a smash mouth running game. No elite team in our conference will allow us the time to send DHB down the field, so we will have to stop all of these 3rd down shotgun sets and pound that rock!!!!

    ...twas I

Once again, he had no touchdowns in 2008. Zac Robinson threw 25 TDs...19 of them were to Dez Bryant, because he was a much, much, much better redzone target.

Pettigrew at 17 would be a bad pick imo. We have other needs and a blocking te can be had in the later rounds.

I just really don't see what warrants a first round grade for Pettigrew. He's a great blocker, yes, but you can get those later in the draft in droves. He's also not much of a pass catching threat.

Yeah I don't get it. I mean why not just pay Chris Baker if you were going to draft someone at 17 to replace him? This is not a need to be filled at #17. FTR, I was more than happy to see Baker go.

Why are people wanting to draft this guy?

Plenty of other blocking TE options later in draft. We're gonna either move up for Macklin or Sanchez; draft Moreno; or trade for Boldin

    From scout.com:

Pettigrew is a big, physical tight end who can dominate an opponent at the line of scrimmage and in the open field. He has prototypical size and is a tremendous athlete. He’s quick off the line, moves well laterally and uses his strength and hands to his advantage in blocking situations. He provides a quarterback with confidence as he sets up nicely in an open area and flashes strong, reliable hands. - Chris Steuber, Scout.com

Seems like a great blocker and a decent receiver. Would make it REALLY hard for D's to figure out whether he or Keller was the decoy if they pulled a passing play with 2 TEs on the field. I'm neither for nor against him, just adding some food for thought....

TE's, especially "blocking" ones are a dime a dozen. No more TE's in the 1st round. We took one in the 1st round last year. I don't want to see any other Johnny Mitchell, Kyle Brady type debacle.
