Unusual scheduling. Usually there would be a day off Monday because of the travel. April 13: Mike Pelfrey vs. Walter Silva April 15: Oliver Perez vs. Kevin Correia April 16: John Maine vs. Jake Peavy All 7:10 night games. Scouting Reports from mlb.com: Padres: Silva's Major League debut on Wednesday at PETCO Park against the Dodgers drew mixed reviews. The 32-year-old, who had never pitched professionally in the United States, allowed two runs on five hits over five innings. He walked four, including Dodgers pitcher Chad Billingsley twice (yes, two walks to the pitcher), though he did manage to get nine groundball outs. The Padres would like to see Silva be more economical with his pitches as he threw 95 in five innings in his debut. Mets: Pelfrey is to throw the first pitch in the history of Citi Field. That he enters this historic start with a winning record is, he concedes, a matter of good fortune rather than good pitching. He succeeded against the Reds Wednesday despite a 44-pitch first inning and allowing four walks, five hits and four runs in five innings. Pelfrey put his pitch count at 104, so at least his stamina was enhanced. His lone career victory against the Padres -- he has opposed them twice -- came last August at Shea Stadium. Bases-empty home runs by Adrian Gonzalez and Kevin Kouzmanoff produced the runs against him. Jody Gerut has four hits in seven career at-bats against Pelfrey. Padres: Correia saw mixed results in his Padres debut on April 9 against the Dodgers at PETCO Park. The good news was the non-roster invitee struck out five and allowed three runs over five innings, the last two runs coming when Edgar Gonzalez couldn't handle a rocket hit right at him at third base. Otherwise, Correia showed good command at times, though he walked four and walked in a run with the bases loaded. He kept the ball down well at times and did get 10 ground-ball outs, one that resulted in a double-play ball. Correia threw 98 pitches in his season debut and likely could have worked longer if the walks and strikeouts hadn't led to so many deep counts. Mets: Following Perez's season debut last week in Cincinnati, Mets manager Jerry Manuel said he was still unsure what Perez was capable of giving him. He hopes it's not what Perez gave him last Thursday: 4 1/3 innings, five walks and eight runs. The lone bright spot was Perez's seven strikeouts, a sign that his stuff is lively. But he'll need far better control of it if he wants to shut down his first big league team, the Padres. Perez is 1-3 with a 5.40 ERA against them in seven seasons since leaving San Diego. Padres: After allowing three runs in seven innings in his first start, an Opening Day loss to the Dodgers, Peavy was exceptionally sharp in his last start, Saturday against the Giants at PETCO Park. The 2007 Cy Young Award winner came within two outs of a complete-game victory. Peavy had the sharp slider back that he showed late in Spring Training, a pitch that didn't always work well for him against the Dodgers. All told, he allowed three runs on seven hits in 8 1/3 innings with 10 strikeouts and no walks. Mets: He could have pitched longer, but Maine gave way to a pinch-hitter with the Mets rallying in the sixth inning of Friday's game against the Marlins. He gave the Mets just five innings, on a night in which they could have used more. But he showed quite a few encouraging signs, dialing his fastball into the mid-90s, striking out five batters and allowing two runs. Maine will next pitch against the Padres, a team that hit him hard when he last saw them in 2007.
The Mets are an expansion team. They will have quite a few clunkers this year because this is their inaugural season. The original Mets franchise lost 120 games their first season. I don't expect the new franchise to lose that many, though.
How many Major League and Major League II quotes am I going to use this season? 1. They're still shitty.
Tom Seaver really is a piece of shit. Like anyone cares about his fucking wine. It's a disgrace they had him throw out the first pitch.
How many Mets fans are 60 years old and actually know Seaver as anything other than a horrible announcer and an arrogant prick?
I think everyone is at the game but this not really quite the inspired effort I was hoping for in this new ballpark.
