Considering that we didn't see him put any of it together in the preseason even until last year, why would that be surprising? Because he wasn't chosen to start over Favre?

Actually he has the same experience as Cassel before he got his chance, zero. I am not a big believer of Cassel being anything more then a system QB though and think he will be the biggest bust in the NFL next year with Belli and the NE system.

We have yet to see anything out of Ratliff to get excited about. I'm sorry if I can't get excited about two throws to a wide open WR in a meaningless preseason against people that are probably bagging groceries right now.

If he had all this raw talent that people are suggesting he would have been drafted or at the very least been able to beat out Kellen Clemens for the backup job last year. Maybe he can work out, crazier things have happened but the fact that our CS and FO doesn't believe it doesn't give me much hope and we certainly shouldn't pass on the opportunity to draft a QB with real raw talent for the slight chance that he will work out.

I have to go with don on this one! I also echoed the same sentiments a while back. Farve being brought in and the reaching out for cutler, does indeed show a lack of faith/confidence/trust / Insert noun here___________.

Although I?m of the opinion that we need to stop reaching when it comes to quarter back and just see what we have on this team. I know that could entail not doing much during this season, but I?m willing to suffer and wait out the amazing QB race.

Someone mentioned Steve young and I think that is a good comparison. Steve hung out in the shadows of Montana and when he got his chance he made a go of it and won a super bowl. We could have that same situation here. Bare in mind none of our quarter backs can hold Young?s jock strap, but the comparison is still good.:shit:

Uh, no it doesn't. This point has been answered many times on these forums, most recently with Reilly's most recent post above. It's already been explained.

Plus you are showing binary thinking. Either they make no move whatsoever, even exploring options, or Clemens Ratliff both suck.

How about they think Clemens and Ratliff are good, but Cutler might have been better?

It's not an either or choice.

i love when people on this board use terms like "it's obvious" or "it's evident that" when talking about how clemens and ratliff aren't the answer and the organization feel strongy about that... REALLY!?.. how can you say that.. how obvious or evident is it??.. i would love for one of these people to tell me what they have seen that makes them think the Jets organization doesn't have confidence in the QBs on the roster.. i mean two first rounders and a 3rd .. isnt a terrible asking price.. but OBVIOUSLY.. Tanny feels more comfortable risking it with our QBs than giving away three picks on Cutler...

Continuously?? As far as we know they didn't go after Cutler that hard so that may show the opposite effect to what you are saying... Also Favre could be looked at as a sales pitch for PSL's as much as confidence in a young QB.

I still say Schottenheimer coming back and possibly putting his Head coaching future in the hands of these QB's is the best clue going....

But, I also think we have guys that can start... I think Clemens can easily play the role of the "Safe Caretaker" - he knows the system and I think Schott is going to be able to do a lot of different things this year without having to re-write plays and start over again.

Well the fact that Tanny would have gladly given up 3 picks for Cutler if he could just get Denver to talk to him is a pretty strong indication. Another strong evidence is the fact that they have worked out every QB in this draft.

If they had one iota of confidence in their QBs they wouldn't be going on the great QB world tour just 3 years after their last great QB world tour that ended in the drafting of Kellen Clemens.

Seriously it doesn't take Sherlock Holmes to figure out they are not happy about their QB situation or an inside source. One only needs to have some common sense to come to that conclusion.

Actually, Chicago gave up more than two 1s and a three. They gave up a QB that has a 13-3 starting record.

I'm willing to concede that you have a mountain of anecdotal evidence that suggests that our FO wants more assurance in the QB department. I'm not sure that it's so much a function of not liking Clemens or Ratliffe as it is the fact that they (we... all of us) just don't know. We don't know what we have.

So yeah, reaching out to explore other QB options is something I would expect from a good FO, especially if you don't know what you have. It's the fear of the unknown that's been driving the QB Don-Quixote-like quest for the Impossible Dream, not the fact that Clemens and Ratliffe stink up the field unmercifully.

I can't blame the FO for wanting better, but it's partially the FO's fault too. Bringing in Favre greatly hampered Clemens' and Ratty's development. Keeping Pennington around for longer than necessary did also. Both those situations contributed to the unrest as to Clemens and/or Ratty, so here we are, like I said 24 months ago, no better off and not any further along in our quest for the Impossible QB Dream than we were 2 years ago.

I have to disagree here. The Jets have a number of professional talent evaluators and two different coaches suggest that these guys are not championship-caliber QBs by actively pursuing other QBs.

Furthermore, the Jets don't bring in a Rex Ryan-type coach if they think they have a QB to build a championship-caliber offense around. The fact of the matter is that the Jet are further along defense than offense, but the sad reality is that very very very rarely can you win without a top flight QB.

I agree. It is the "no stone unturned" way of the NFL. Cutler is better than what we have now, but what we have now could develop into something good. That is the unknown. The price was too high for the Jets, and now they have to play the cards already in the deck.

Nailed it. Plus, we never got any trade draft pick for Chad. And, we lost a 3rd rounder for Farve. We did get it back for Vilma, but ya never know, we may have picked up a better QB with one of those picks that are now off the table.

If the Defense steps up big this year, and Clemens plays not like the Clemens we have seen or Ratliff continues to show he has the goods, we will be fine. Ainge is still a huge unknown and spent most of last year injured.

I also look at the fact that we got the #6 pick in the draft last year, whom, if Ryan can make him play like he was drafted #17, that in itself will be a huge boost.

I look at this whole thing as the glass being half full and not half empty.

The fact that the Jets are actively pursuing other QBs does not necessarily mean that they're convinced Clemens/Ratty are not NFL caliber, it just means they are always looking for better talent. I don't know about you, but that's the way I want it to be. If there's a better NT out there than Kris Jenkins, and the price is right, I'm going to look at him.

They don't? Why not? What's wrong with having both? You seem to see these issues only in black and white.

I might agree with very rarely, but not with very, very, very rarely. Again, we DON'T KNOW if we have a top flight QB or if we do not have one. But it is good TEAMS that win championships. Yes, QBs are important. So are LBs, Corners, Safeties, DEs, RBs, WRs, ... you get the picture. You can win a championship with a good team and a mediocre QB, but you can't win a championship with a good QB and a mediocre team. It's just not going to happen.

First, in my opinion, there are QBs and then every other position. QBs are the single most important position on the field and have more impact on the game than any other position by far.

My overall point is that the team does know, at least on Clemens and most likely on Ainge and Ratliff. There are only two QBs that I can think of that surprised even their coaches and performed at a high level, Kurt Warner and Tom Brady. Is it possible that one of the current Jets QBs could blossom into and all-time great, yes. Is it probably no.

Most other QBs that have been successful were expected to be successful before they even took the field. Even guys like Romo and Hasselbeck had the confidence of the coaches before they stepped on the field.

I'm not so sure of this..

IF Clemens turns out to be a good QB and IF the Jets have a good season, we very well may sit here months and/or years from now and talk about how fortunate Clemens was to be able to learn from two pretty good QB's and was lucky enough to be given the time to develop like QB's did in the "old Days"....

I really think the best case scenario for Clemens career is exactly the path he is on if he is ever going to make it.

Excellent point. Ratty must have benefitted from watching Favre last year too.

For Clemens, there was no better mentor than Chad, I'll say that. People can say what they want about Chad Pennington, but you'll never find a better tutor than Chad was. Even at TC, Chad was always talking to the rookies, telling them things. You could tell it wasn't all small talk. Hopefully Clemens learned enough from Chad (probably not so much from Favre, who always seemed aloof and unconcerned about such things) to put some of it into practice and show us what he's got.

What I mostly meant was that Clemens and Ratty didn't get much time with the 1st team during Penny and Favre's era. TC was always about Penny really, with Clemens as the afterthought, despite what Mangini used to say about "open camp." It was never truly open for Clemens, IMO, and always Chad's job to lose.

and exactly who was brimming with confidence over: KURT WARNER, DREW BREES, TRENT DILFER with the Ravens, JAKE DELHOMME, and so many guys that were not drafted or were free agents or thought of as camp fodder. Even MONTANA was a third rd pick with a weak arm. Teams do not know what they have until the guy gets a chance to play. Ask TOM BRADY! err how about CASSEL? DEREK ANDERSON was not highly thought of at all! he just got the chnace and won a job! From what I have read CLEMENS & RATTY have RYAN's confidence yet you discount it.
