They both retired...but I'm sure if Trent Green goes down, Vinny will be up off his couch and waiting for a call.
Your comments reveal an extraordinary anti Italian bias. I am proudly Italian-american and have no mob ties and deeply resent your insinuation that we do simply by virtue of being italian-american. What should I expect from a guy who thought CHREBET was an Italian surname anyway? And by the way, I am from the area and have NO idea what you mean. What do you mean?
You have no class, no class at all. Very Stupid statement. I loved Chrebet because of the way he played, and that's it. I think he is 2nd all-time in receptions in Jets history. Not bad for a guy that was undrafted, too small, too slow. And by the way, I do not look like him at all and I grew up in the area.
Take a walk around the Hofstra campus. Heck, take a ride on the LIE, or to Deer Park Avenue. I did not think that "Chrebet" was an italian surname, as I explained quite rationally in my post which you were too busy being alarmed at to read. I apologize for the offense. The DISTINCTION was made to say that people root for Chrebet because he looks like any other local guy, as Rudy Reudtigger looked like any local guy from PA. The reality that a short, musclebound guy with dark features might look like any number of young guidos that cruise around in Honda Civics throughout the tri-state area really isn't that shocking or offensive. I never said that "Chrebet" was an italian name, which, incidentally, means nothing in an area that is largely mixed between Irish, Italian, Polish, Russian, etc. -X-
I'm sorry that you can't overlook the fact that the guy was a very mediocre receiver after a short, above average run in the beginning of his career. The reality is, if he were a black guy who went to Alabama his career would not have been half as admired. Chrebet sold more jerseys than anyone his first few years in the league. I appreciate that he gave up his body week after week, but let's not make him out to be Don Maynard here. The guy had a very run-of-the mill career, uncharacteristically good for an undrafted free agent, but overall, average. -X-
Exactly. We'd love Chrebet if he were black and 6'2," too, but half the reason why Chrebet is as popular as he is is because he's white and undersized, and if you're white, you're always viewed as a gritty overachiever, and since most glamour players in the NFL are black, people relish in seeing a white guy, especially a local guy who is undersized and not that athletic succeed. I don't know if it's right to call out guidos in this thread, even though half of them annoy the hell out of me, but Chrebet represents the every-man.
I'm none of the above, but I don't have to be to call you a moron. For a moment I thought I was visiting a David Duke website. Get a major grip on your biased, insecure, self-loathing personality, dipshit. I don't care how many posts you have, just because you have gargantious low self-esteem doesn't give you license to turn a Jets football discussion board into some kind of biased, low-life, ethnic tirade. Get with the program, dude. It's a big world out here. Live with it or smother in your own insecurity and self-hatred.
David Duke? Get a grip. I apologize if I offended anybody, but that's a real disgraceful comparison. gargantious? Doesn't anyone here watch South Park? These modern fonzi wannabes are a hilarious reality in the tri-state area. My post wasn't even about that, but that's what it became, because of bad reading. I didn't know it was against the law to poke fun at people who listen to bad music and dress like they're growing up Gotti. Lord. -X-
i think of that list, one of the names that sill shocks me as being always underrated is Rod Smith. Every year that guy gets a thousand yards, and you never hear anything from him. That being said Preist holmes, Warner, and a few others have had some very good years.
It's because he was a JETS player! Ironically, Bobby Hamilton made the List and he left us to go win a SB W/ The Pats! no respect!! But I think it is for actives.
Its heartwarming to know that you explained it all so rationally. I am not busy being alarmed, which itself is a laughable self serving cover-your-ass asessment. I saw WC as the embodiment of what a JET really is--the underdog,, nobody gave em a chance,, odds stacked against,, yet a winner in every possible way with class, intelligence and ability, regardless of how you see his genetics. Just my opinion. Thanks for the update on the mixed ethnicity of your area--that was a complete surprise, but i really need you to explain again what a guido is.......
No he's not a Don Maynard but he is 2nd on the Jets most receptions chart with 565 to Maynard's 627 and if it wasn't for injuries he would've easily passed that mark. It seems to me that you are mad at Chrebet for being white, and a hard worker who would catch anything thrown his way..No matter how hard he was going to get hit, which is why he had to retire.
That is absolutely, by far the most retarded thing I have ever heard in my life. Apprently everyone looks like chrebet now.
Mack illustrated my point perfectly. Some people need reading lessons. I do not think it racially insensitive to point out the obvious reality that 1.Chrebet is overrated 2.Chrebet is overrated because of his race 3.Chrebet is also loved because of his race 4.Chrebet is a short, jacked up guy with dark features that looks Italian. With the prevalance of "guido culture" running around I did not realize that such a term was that damaging or insulting any more. It seems pretty chic to be growing up Gotti now. Sorry. 5.Working class people from ethnic white communities identify with the guy because he looks and acts like them, which is not uncommon. This is why white irish boxers of the early 20th century were so loved. People identify with their own. Granted, I should probably have not used terms like "goombah" or "italiano(that one is bad?)" but I didn't think it would be hard for people to comprehend that Chrebet looks like your typical musclehead jersey shore Hofstra Nassau CC guy. Finally, I'm not "mad at Chrebet for being white." Players are overrated, on both sides, for their race all the time, and I'm just astute enough to point out the reality. Look, the stats are there. The guy was mediocre after 2000, and the stats reflect it. He had ONE 1,000 yard season. His underdog style and local roots make people think he was Steve Largent, when he was more like Ricky Proehl. -X-
haha i agree about people over-rating him because hes a white WR. but in all honesty put all undrafted WR's career stats together and im sure Chrebets will be impressive. your going by raw numbers which would be good for judging a WR drafted and coming into the league with expectations. point in case, take all of chrebets plays out of the jets history and we'd be a different team.
Here is the #1 reason Wayne is not on that list. CAUSE NO ONE KNOWS WHO HE IS .He is so popular in the tri-state are because he’s is from the area and did go to a local college. Unless your one of the regular teams the jets face season after season people have no idea who he is.
I don't think that his dark features that make him look Italian make a difference. What Chrebet is was a local short, slow, white guy who through hard work took advantage of the worst receiving corps on one of the worst teams in the NFL. He had a nice career. If he were 6'1" and black, he'd be Johnnie Morton. A solid receiver with a good career, but nothing great. One other reason we like him: he spent his entire career as a Jet. In a salary cap era NFL, most guys leave teams every year. Chrebet spent his whole career as a Jet (largely due to the fact that he was a fan favorite, which is because of his size, speed, race, and birthplace), and he has represented the Jets well throughout his career. We loved him because he's what all of us want to be. We all dream to be like that.
