Rex Ryan, New York Jets Ryan likes to play the role of the guy who shoots from the hip and says whatever's on his mind, as did his famous coaching father. But what is sometimes overlooked about Ryan is that he's very smart and calculating as well, and rarely says anything without having a motive or a method to his madness. Case in point: He keeps talking up the Jets' lightly experienced three-man quarterback depth chart, even though most observers don't seem to share his enthusiasm for the Kellen Clemens, Brett Ratliff and Erik Ainge trio. "I feel good about the quarterback situation," Ryan told anyone who would listen last week in Dana Point, Calif. "Everyone seems to think we have major issues there. I don't think the situation is what people think it is. I think we're going to be just fine." Some may find that answer puzzling, but Ryan knows he might have to dance with the quarterbacks he has on hand this season, so why not talk them up and hope one of them rises to the challenge? If he somehow lands a veteran later this offseason (like a Cutler), then it'll be all the better and no one will be worse off for going to war this year with either Clemens, Ratliff or Ainge. But if Ryan were hedging or bad-mouthing his own QB depth chart at this point and then no one arrived to save the day for the Jets, where would New York's rookie head coach be then? Ryan is making the smart move, and it has no downside. File it under the "love the one you're with" heading -- at least until something better comes along. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/don_banks/03/31/new-coaches/1.html
I'm going to file it under the "no shit" category and call it a day. Right, he's such a genius for not saying "I'm not happy with these QB's" or something to that effect.
in terms of what is read on here, people think that Ryan saying he likes the QBs on the roster means that the position won't be looked into. The problem is he might be accused of double speak, which to me is bullshit because you can like the 3 QBs on the roster and still like a prospect more.
I actually believe he feels like he should be able to win with any mediocre QB. Hell, after the Bears won the Lombardi in '85/'86, some reporter asked him how well McMahon played in that game and Buddy said something like 'it doesn't matter who we had playing quarterback, our defense won that game'. That's Rex Ryan's father, the guy that taught him about football. If we go for some blue chip QB prospect whether it be via trade or draft, it'll be to sell PSLs, because I doubt Ryan will be fully behind anything that takes key players away from his defense.
I have to say, I'm more than a little anxious that the Jets are going to be about as much fun next year as the Ravens.
Took the words right out of my mouth... that was about the dumbest statement a hack writer could make. No coach in their right mind would come out and bad mouth any player, even when the player either sucks or is a pain in the ass. Just look at coaches talking about TO... they either lie through their clenched teeth, or they get that goofy look and don't stop grinning like something smells shitty.
yeah that AFC championship game they went to last year was no fun at all! in all seriousness, if we have a defense even close to what Bmore seems to have, we will be a contender any week of the year. No matter how un-fun it looks, winning is what we like best.
no joke, winning is always fun. Maybe the Ravens are a bad example, their D has some exciting playmakers. Maybe more like the Dungy-era Buccaneers. I really hated watching that boring ass football.
