This was great...... 2 things stood out to me..... (It is) not my show. It is going to be our show. I always believed in that. We have tremendous playmakers and there are already leaders here, before I got here. I look forward to meshing in with those guys. I will find my niche and my place. We will mold together. What made us so good in Baltimore was the chemistry that we had. It is not about stats, it’s not about Pro Bowls and it’s not about defensive MVPs. All of those things are a byproduct of us playing together. The quickest way to earn your teammates’ respect is for them to know that you will sacrifice yourself for them when the time comes and in turn expect them to do the same. When it is time for me to go in there and take on three guys and end up on the ground and get up dizzy and David (Harris) makes the tackle or someone else, Calvin (Pace), makes the tackle I am going to get up and celebrate with them. When it is his turn to (take on blockers) I want to do it as well. That is how you build a team. That is how you build a bond. You have to have trust. You can’t just put stars together and expect to get immediate results unless you get guys that are willing to sacrifice themselves for the betterment of the team. The byproduct of that is the Pro Bowl, is the defensive MVP. And this...... We won’t back down from anybody. We won’t take a step back from anybody. You guys can expect to see a very physical, violent (defense). I do not know if this division has ever seen a violent defense. It is one thing to be physical and make a tackle. It is another thing to be violent. “Violence” makes guys stay on the sideline when they are getting hit and their ankle is hurting a little bit. (If) they know they are going to get violence, they are going to sit that out. A tackle on a play is different. That is what we are going to try and bring to the table. I have no problem with talking. To tell you the truth, you have to shut me up. That is why I did not call the plays out there because I was too busy fighting. I wonder if he has a big target on guys like Wes Welker and Tom Brady?
Scott is right. It's 77's defense. We need a back up nose tackle. I agree with you Miano, those are great notable quotes. I hope he can carry that chip on his shoulder even though the league has recognized him as not "being the underdog" anymore with that contract.
I liked that he had noted, in previous visits, the passion of the jets fans. I think a violent defense is just the thing to get us going.
I love how he's talking about doing the grunt work (taking on blockers and getting up dizzy) so that other players can make big plays - and then getting up and celebrating with them. Defense is so emotional - and if a team takes advantage of that they can become dominant like the Steelers this year, and Ravens the past several years. A few years ago (6 or 7) the Jets were playing the Jaguars. Early in the first quarter one of the Jets defenders absolutely lit up Kyle Brady and forced him to leave the game. What should have happened is all 11 defenders should have been going nuts and setting a tone for the game. Establishing that they were going to not tackle - but hurt the offensive players. Instead what happened was all 11 guys went back into the huddle with their heads down. That defense, and I think every Jets defense since Bryan Cox and Belicheck left lacked emotion and killer instinct. If Rex Ryan and Bart Scott can bring that back, watch out because the Jets are coming!
Our defense was emotionless down the stretch... Remember the Seattle game? No one on that defense seemed hungry to win or even pissed about how the team was collapsing and how poorly everyone was playing. That was certainly in part a reflection of Manboobs and his gum chewing poker face. There is no chance that will happen again this year. Scott's intensity will be infectious.
