KFFL.com is reporting that the Patriots may be interested in using their newfound cap space to acquire Julius Peppers: This could explain why they were satisfied with a 2nd rounder, if they planned to spin it off for Peppers. Still, I'm not sure why you don't take the 12th, trade it for more picks, and THEN snag Peppers. Either way, I think we can all agree this is a frightening proposition.
It's not going to happen. This is the type of thing I cannot stand. A local reporter will just put unfounded speculation, and then some national websites will start reporting one guy's speculation to mean that the team might be interested. They're not. He's 29, and from the sounds of it nobody in Carolina is that upset about his departure. Going after him would both diminish the pile of draft picks the Pats have (and value) and negate much of the cap space they cleared up when they got rid of Cassel The thing is Jets fans should want this to happen. It would give them a one year fix that ultimately could prevent Wilfork from being re-signed or the infusion of youth and talent into their defense.
I don't buy it, if they sign peppers it all but guarantees Wilfork is gone next year, and I think they value wilfork at NT higher than peppers, who while a great pass rusher is not much of a presence against the run.
Peppers has said he wanted to play for a 3-4 team at OLB. New England is always in the hunt for a championship year after year, which makes this team even more attractive. And Belichick is a crafty guy who often does the unconventional. So it wouldn't be that much of a surprise to see this deal go down.
Actually I'm praying this happens. Once Wilfork comes free, I wouldn't mind seeing him in Jet Green - even if that means overpaying him to a degree. Tanny is capable of making it happen, I am sure.
They were 11-5 with all the injuries they had. Now healthy, plus Peppers and draft picks, Super Bowl is not a crazy thought. Maybe 19-0, but its possible.
They can have him...and you better believe his contract will be bigger then Haynesworth's (he'll request at least). IF they they wanna wrap $15-$16 Mil a season in him....have at it.
Now that Jason Taylor got cut they may just go that route, because they were interested in him last off-season
Plus they would want to switch him to LB yes? It's a risk considering he tends to dissapear at times.
Peppers was franchised, presumably because Carolina has no intentions of letting him go anywhere else, right?
Pats will re-sign Wilfork,Mankins and Seymour and probably find a less expensive alternative to a Peppers signing. That's why they have been consistently near the top since BB came to the team.4 first day picks gives them alot of ammo to plug holes and none are going to be cap busters.
I think they will get Mankins and Wilfork signed Wilfork is the key. I think the let Seymour walk next year. The return on him for his current contract hasn't been to the level of the money. I think he's hurt too much.
