    http://blogs.nfl.com/2009/02/09/falcons-to-use-franchise-tag-on-punter-koenen/
the average of the top 5 punter salaries in 08 was 2.48 mil
and i hate to go by articles I read, but given that the raiders will be involved in the bidding war.....i believe it
"However, the Raiders’ Shane Lechler will become the highest-paid punter in NFL history this offseason with a deal that some are projecting to be over $4 million per season."

...regardless of how much lechler makes this offseason...there is no way the jets clear (we're 15 over + rookies) 20 mil to get under the cap ...then renegotiate to make a run at scott/leonhard/other role players.....and then have the ability to throw 3-4 mil at a punter
try explaining why we spent 3-4 mil on a punter to Ellis/Rhodes/Pace/Moore/Coleman/Thomas/Faneca....or whoever we try to renegotiate with....b/c signing a bigtime punter is not happening

This is the Raiders were are talking about. The team that made Tommy 'Who?' Kelly the highest paid DT in the league and traded a 2 and a 6 for Deangelo Hall, only to cut him at mid-season; also the team that spent a first round pick an a drunk Polish kicker with a pocket full of roofies. We aren't dealing with MENSA here.

yeah i am not questioning anyone

it's just crazy to think a team would make the leap from 2 million to 4 million

that 4+ million could be manufactured by his agent and not very realistic

We did draft Craig Hentrich but we let the Packers sign him off of our practice squad. Good thing we had Louie Aguiar...Ha!

over 4 million a season.....meaning he might only make 2 million next year but average over 4 million for the length of his contract...very believable given the way NFL contracts work...back weighted
given that the only way we sign anyone is through restructuring there is no chance....If tanny and rex pitch the idea of bringing in Bart Scott or leonhard to Faneca/Ellis/Moore/Rhodes/etc and explain they need to restructure...i think they understand
but if tanny says...restructure so i can sign a punter to a 17 million dollar contract...there is no way

I concur. I've thought the Jets needed a punted for about 10 years now. Never posted it cause I didn't think anybody cared. +1 for you. Good call.
