Sure there are still some teams in the NFL who've never made it to a Super Bowl; Cleveland, Detroit, Jacksonville, Arizona, oops...but to really evaluate just how underperforming this ownership and the previous ones have been, you really should look how the Jets have done compared to their AFL counterparts, the teams that came into the league the same year, 1960, particularly the teams in the eastern division. The original 8, the foolish club, plus the 2 expansion franchises (MIA and CIN) that joined in 1966. Boston/New England Patriots 6 SB (3 wins) Denver Broncos 6 SB (2 wins) Oakland/LA Raiders 5 SB (3 wins) Miami Dolphins 5 SB (2 wins) Buffalo Bills 4 SB (0 wins) Kansas City Chiefs 2 SB (1 win) Cincinnati Bengals 2 SB (0 wins) New York Titans/Jets 1 SB (1 win) Houston Oilers/Tenn Titans 1 SB (0 wins) The Jets division rivals (NE/Buf/Mia) have averaged a Super Bowl appearance once a decade or better. Throw in the other expansion teams from the NFL that appeared in 1960 and 61, the Cowboys (8 SB) and Vikings (4 SB), and you see how truly inferior the Jets ownership has been.
You can do anything with a set of numbers. *Buffalo's four appearances were all right in a row, so in close to 50 years they have put together one really good team, as the Jets did, except we have a championship and they don't. *Miami had a similar run in the early 70s and got into two Super Bowls in the early 80s, they are now up to 25 years with no appearances and 36 years with no titles--not far behind us. *The Patriots have put their one big run together in this decade, so while it's recent, their first 40 years were inferior to ours. *Minnesota appeared in four of the first eleven Super Bowls, haven't been back in 33 years now and have never won. Again, I'd rather have our history than theirs.
Pats went to the bowl in the 80s, and 90s playa .. almost went in the 70s if it wasn't for a bogus roughing the passer call ..
They got embarassed in Super Bowl XX by the Bears and lost to Green Bay in Super Bowl XXXI. I would take one victory over two losses any day of the week. If you want to count "almosts", we have a couple of those ourselves. If you want to talk about questionable calls regarding QBs, your first Super Bowl title was the direct result of the bogus "tuck rule", where Oakland had the Pats beaten.
I don't think our one Super Bowl title is really that pathetic compared to other teams. I think our lack of division titles and playoff appearances/victories is where the futility really shines.
Super Bowl Winning Percentages: Boston/New England Patriots..50% Denver Broncos...............33% Oakland/LA Raiders...........60% Miami Dolphins...............40% Buffalo Bills.................0% Kansas City Chiefs...........50% Cincinnati Bengals............0% New York Titans/Jets........100% Houston Oilers/Tenn Titans....0% Why even go if you're not going to win?
I think ur posted is a bit skewed. First the 1st 4 SBs was AFL teams vs NFL teams & all SBs from 70 forward was NFL vs NFL so the NYJs & KC wins were pre merger with neither having won or appeared in a SB post merger. I think a better comparison would just be post merger & there U will see that we & KC fared extremely poorly vs the other 8 AFL teams that played pre merger
Yeah, it all depends on the criteria you use. Actually our playoff appearances and wins are not bad compared to a lot of teams, but division titles are shamefully low. The 70s were bad, we made it four times in the 80s winning three playoff games, got to an AFC Championship in the 80s and 90s, and in this decade we've made the playoffs four times and won two games. Not great but certainly not a bottom feeder, look at the Lions, Saints and previously to this year the Cards. The Bengals, the Chiefs, those are the bottom feeders.
I agree with you all and I've said that mediocrity, not terrible, has been our brand. But when you realize how many teams in the NFL have at least won a conference title and gotten to the big game since 1968, you see that it's really unusual for a team NOT to make it to the game in 40 years. Especially the way the league has brought parity in...teams are expected to make the Super Bowl with more frequency than the Jets have done. The NFL has been reengineered to ensure all the teams eventually get to the big game. The fact that we haven't really indicates a major malfunctioning in our franchise ownership.
True. I lament this every Super Bowl Sunday, thinking that by pure math we'd have to get there eventually. It hasn't helped that since the dawn of free agency and real parity that we had Buffalo's powerhouse in our division and then New England's, that makes it much tougher to get there. We had that little window in between when we almost got there with Parcells.
God, could you imagine what this place would be like if the Jets lost a Super Bowl the way the Cardinals did last night?
The last paragraph of ur post is right on & hopefully is directed at our past owner as well as our present realization
I think ur logic is a tad fuzzy. Pitt does not play in our division do they? Denver does not play in our division do they? Cinncy does not play in our division do they? As for NE/MIA & Bflo troika is it not the fault of our Owners/management & CS as to why we are not able to keep up with the abilities of those 3 teams?
I'm not sure what Cincinnati has to do with anything. My point is, the best path to the Super Bowl is winning your division to get a home game and bye week, and when you have a dominant team in your division that makes it a lot harder. We've had some good teams, certainly as good as the Cardinals were this year, that had to go on the road as a #6 seed, which makes it a lot harder road. One of those teams did run into Pittsburgh on the road, almost beat them, but if we didn't have the Pats in our division, maybe we win it, play somebody else and make the Super Bowl. The Cards were 9-7 and got to play two playoff games at home, including the NFC Championship. We've never had that kind of luck. If they were in our division we'd have finished ahead of them based on head-to-head tie-breakers. It isn't always about the owner.
Well C that is where ownership/management is to blame. If we can not beat the dominant teams in our own division they we are a 2nd class team plain & simple. The motto U should use to see how strong we are is to be the best U have to beat to the best. While we beat AZ they have players that we only dream about who make plays like 11 & 81 & the 15 is no slouch either. They may have a better O & D lines then we do since in my estimation at least 5/6 of last years starters on D need upgrading. We have no game breaking O threat zero none zippo & do not tell me Clowney since NO ONE knows what he can do in a regular season game. IMHO U are doing everything within ur power to rationalize away another NYJ unsuccessful season instead of looking at the true reasons as to why we have been & continue to be super bottom feeding team
Simply Stated It has been to damn long since we have been to the Super Bowl. 40 years and counting...That is our record....
The Steelers had the hardest schedule in the league and play in the Afc which is ten times harder than the Nfc and won the Super Bowl. The bottom line is we need to build a team that can win the big game no matter what the schedule is and stop praying for the stars to line up so we can have our 40 year perfect storm. The Steelers were going to compete for a Sb no matter what happened. Im sick of people hoping Brady gets hurt or the Jags have an off year or some other crap to help our team win. I want us to build a team that can beat anybody no matter who is on the field. As Champ Said they were in the Sb because they have play makers that are not in the same league as the guys on our team. We have not had anything close to Fitzgerald, Boldin or Warner since Joe Willie to Maynard! It is time to stop lying to ourselves and rebuild this mess from scratch.
That hurt my eyes, champ. I'm not really rationalizing, I'd rather be the dominant team, that goes without saying, but having one in your division is a detriment to getting through the playoffs, that's all I'm saying. Also, I have to disagree with your statement "We have no game breaking O threat zero none zippo"--Leon Washington is certainly a game breaking threat, not only on O but on special teams as well.
When you have a dominate team in your division you build a better one than they have. Leon Washington is a great player and my favorite Jet but he is not even in the general Vicinity of Larry Fitzgerald, Boldin or Kurt Warner. When you talk of beating dominant teams you have to have dominant players. Leon can be stopped if keyed on. Fitzgerald and Boldin can only be contained as seen in the game last night.
You're comparing apples and oranges. Those guys are in the passing game and they play in Arizona, we play in the Meadowlands. Leon is as much a game breaking player as anyone in the NFL, you can hand it to him or throw it to him, plus he returns kicks. Also, it's easy to say "just build a better team", everyone knows that, it's not that easy to do. We now have a coach that wants to build a defense, that's how you win. The Giants of the 80s didn't have guys like Arizona, they had a defense with LT, a big O-line, a running game and a QB who didn't make mistakes. That's a formula you can't stop, Arizona's is one that can be beaten. We beat them this year at their own game.
