Vernon is getting paid too much to get rid of, nobody would pay that much for him, so it leaves only one option for Rex: Make him a specialist until (if ever) he developes. Vernon could be a 3rd and long blitzer and a special teams stand out. Rex will find a way to utilize him.
The only issue I have is this kid was a rookie, playing a position he's never played before and how he is considered a bust is beyond me. I think this kid is going to be a solid player once he gets the position down. In my opinion is the only way you can truly label him a bust is if after 2+ seasons, he has not met expectations. The speed in college and the pros are a lot different but then again, it's my opinion.
I Think he can, He's a great Defensive coach who gets respect and brings the most out of his players. I Think Gholston "Hopefully" comes around and isn't a complete bust.
I voted usher in the movie theater However, I think Ryan has a far better opportunity to get the Ghost to realize his potential than Mangini and his passive-aggressive approach to the players. Ryan will not be afraid to get in the face of a player who isn't performing. Getting Rex in here is a breath of fresh air- just get rid of Favre too and start developing a QB and ballgames will be fun to watch again. It will be like watching the 04 defense again, which was without a doubt an exciting season. That defense could play. One thing for certain, Kerry Rhodes won't be blitzing from 15 yards deep anymore. I can't wait for the season now- I do feel bad for Browns fans now though.
I believe we'll now see Gholston in the role I've said he needs to be put in all along. A simple attack the Line of scrimmage type role. Blow up gaps, tackle ball carriers and rush the passer. He obviously struggled w/ Mangini's complex containment rules and pre snap reads..I believe Ryan will keep things simple for him..and allow him to use his freak size, speed and brute strength. I truly believe Gholston becomes a similar version to Shawne Merriman.
I think a lot of success comes down to a how motivated players are to play. I mean your not talking about pumping high school students up for a state championship, your talking about a game owned by billionaires played by millionaires, I think motivation is an understandable factor. And personally I couldn't see EM motivating a dog for a bone. I think VG is a case of that and I think Rex Ryan gets every drop of ability out of Gholston and all our other players. New stadium, New Coach, New Philosophy No more Same old Jets. :jets::buffaloblows::finssuck:ats_suck:
Gholston is an exceptional athlete with good size who just never had great motivation to play football. It seems like Rex is the best person possible to light a fire under his fat expensive a$$. I thought he was a bust, but with Ryan who knows.
For us to really see what he has got he has to start. We have to cut bait with B Thomas he has been with us since 02 & he stinks
I like the Ghost, but I agree with the premise. Gholston went from being a sure-fire Pro Bowlers after being drafted, to an absolute bust throughout the season, to now being a productive NFL player. Sorry I'll take 16 weeks of invisibility over a random comparison to Terrell Suggs. I'd love for Gholston to do well but he showed less in his first year than some UDFA. Let's hold off on making the bust in Canton- Ryan can't turn crap into gold. Of course he's going to talk up Glady/the Ghost now; he's not gonna rip the guy in his first PC
