I have seen a lot of talk about using our first round pick on a linebacker to replace Eric Barton who will most likely leave as a free agent this year. While this draft is pretty deep at linebacker I am surprised that no one else has suggested the following idea: Let's screw the Saints over and sign Vilma as a free agent. The Saints agreed to give us a second rounder if they extended Vilma before trading the pick away to the Giants in the Shockey deal. Now to avoid giving up their first rounder (to the Giants) they plan to let Vilma become a free agent before signing him. This would leave the Jet with a only third rounder after Vilma not only proved to be healthy but also played very well last season. Even if we stick with the 3-4, Thomas/ Gholsten, Harris, Vilma, and Pace sounds a lot better than Thomas, Vilma, Barton, and Hobson did. If nothing else it would serve the Saints right.
i have thought about this extensively and posted it, i would be on board and those stupid TE's wouldn't be open all day long
I think a lot of people here want Vilma back. If Mangini stayed there might have been personal issues between them, but Mangini is long gone. Hardly anyone likes this idea, but what about having Vilma play safety, at least on the first two downs? Then switch him to LB for the passing downs. Or use him as a Rover, an old, hardly used term for a position halfway between LB and safety. I've seen college player Patrick Chung labeled a rover.
He sucked in the 3-4... Why would we bring him back if we have a 3-4? Time to move on... again I guess...
because our biggest issue was pass coverage and he excels in pass coverage. thats why. when he sucked in the 3-4 he had dewayne robertson as hid NT. now its jenkins.
Id be interested to see what he would be able to do in a new system. Like say Rex Ryans system... His speed couldnt hurt
I think EM had a lot to do with the drop off in JV's performance beyond the 3-4. Why was JV never tried on the outside? Is he incapable or was it EM's stubbornness or was it EM's way of making him less useful? This said, JV definitely quit a bit and this is on EM too for whatever reason, personal or otherwise. Also, he can play inside with Harris and this would work. Also, we may be switching to a 4-3 anyway. I think he should come back in any case.
1. I'd think Vilma would be a good fit. In any good 3-4. you need two types of ILBs - run stuffer, and pass-coverage ILB. Currently as it stands, Jets do not have anyone in the middle that will cover the area. That Rhodes is playing a mile behind the LoS doesn't help either. Vilma would thrive now, with Jenkins in front of him, and Harris playing next to him as the run stuffer. 2. With that said, I strongly believe Jets OLB is the biggest liability, followed closely by DE position. As it was evidenced times and times again, Jets OLBs may be big, but they are slow. The point of 3-4 OLB is big AND fast - if any is missing, the opposing offense will abuse that fact, i.e. if the OLBs are small, they will run outside, or if they are slow, slot WRs and TEs will kill them, etc. Bryan Thomas must go, if anything. 3. I was troubled by the lack of this fundamental technique, which is "shedding the blockers." Watch the Giants/Eagles game yesterday, or all of the Ravens game (vs Titans or Dolphins) again, and pay close attention to how quick the defenders break off from the engagement. Once they figure out the direction of the plays, they are free - almost instantly. If Rex can teach this fundamental *yet vital* technique, I'm all for him. Throughout the entire course of the year, Jets D never showed the ability to shed the blockers.
AGREED Ive been saying this for months. Vilma would be a much better LB with a quality defensive line in front of him,not swiss cheese or a rag doll (D-Rob). SIGN Vilma Absolutely.
If we screwed over the Saints and signed Vilma, we'd be screwing ourselves too because we'd get knocked down a round in the draft.
The Jets are assured a 3 round pick (it can't go lower) from the Saints, since Vilma met the playing time limits decided in the trade. The Jet's could get a 2nd round pick, instead of a 3rd, if the Saints sign Vilma before he's a Free Agent. That's not going to happen, since the Saints would have to give the G-Men a 1st Round pick for Shockey, instead of the current 2nd Round. BTW, the Jet's have to give back the Saints a 4th rd pick from last year's 4th the jets received. So, Basically the Jets get a 3rd Round pick for Vilma......not too bad.
That is a possibility, Jet's get a 3rd round pick for 1 year of service for Vilma. I doubt it's going to happen. The Saintss are taking a risk, that Vima may walk and select another team. FWIW, Spikes fans for the Jets, may lose their opportunity to draft him, if the Saints lose Vilma. Just a thought.
I don't know if Vilma is the answer for us at LB per say, but we definitely need to induce some speed into our LB corps.
are we seriously going through this again..HE DIDNT WANT TO BE HERE...and he will never want to....he was in this system for 2 years and was lost...had nothing to do with the players around him...he was lost
