I?m just curious, why is he in the hunt for a HC-Job? And why is he in the hunt for OUR HC-Job? He?s a OL-Coach, we already got Callahan, who did a good Job with our OL last year, what good does it do, when your HC and our Assisten-HC are both OL-Coaches? He was never a Coordinator anywhere, all he did was coach OLs. He did a good Job in Pittsburgh and Washington with their OLs and the Cards passblocking is also really good, but they couldn?t run the ball at all, so what did he do to earn a spot in the HC race next to great Coordnators like Spags, Ryan or Josh McDaniels? He also doesn?t have a true Identity, the Teams he coached for, were as different as day and night, the Steelers were/are a smashmouth runningteam, the Cards are a passfirst team that can?t run at all. He also never had anything to do with Defense whatsoever. So what would his hirering mean for the team? What systems would we play, and why? Would someone please enlighten me, why the heck anyone (especially we) should hire this guy to be a (our) HC! Thanks.
Yeah, I don't understand the love for Russ Grimm. Great player, but he doesn't seem like an Xs and Os guy at all. Why do we want him calling plays from the sideline, and do we really trust him on making important calls like whether or not to go for it on 4th and 2?
Great question and I can't really answer it BUT... I did hear today that there is a good possibility that Mangini would take Callahan to Cleveland with him. I agree with you that Grimm is not worthy of being a HC candidate because the AZ run game is deplorable but they may be factoring in that they will be losing Callahan.
He hasn't just coached the OL, he was also a TE's coach in Washington from 92-96 before moving to coach their OL. He's been an Assistant Head Coach since 2004 with Pittsburgh and Arizona - he's been groomed to be a Head Coach. I understand the nervousness about bringing in Grimm to be our HC considering he has similar credentials to Herman Edwards (never been a HC or coordinator before). Personally I wouldn't mind bringing in someone who has a history with the Steelers if we think they could bring with them the Steelers magic.
He probably wouldn't be the one calling the plays. I think that responsibility would still be with the Offensive Coordinator.
Just think of all the fun the newspapers will have with his last name. "Jets look Grimm" "Grimm start for the Jets" "Jets playoff hopes look Grimm"
I don?t know enough about him to really judge his HC-Qualitys, that?s why I made this thread, It wasn?t ment to be a anti-Grimm thread. I really am just curious, why he is in the race for a HC-Job and has been several times in the past? What would he bring to a team, that qualifies him to be a good HC?
Grimm is considered one of the top assistants in the NFL. Additionally, There is alot more to the X's and O's on the OL than you think. The running game has not been great in AZ...but Grimm doesn't exactly have top personel on his OL like he did in Pittsburgh. To me he'd be a very good choice for HC.
Did you stop reading there? The very next line I said I understand the nervousness about bringing in Grimm to be the next head coach
Nor does he have top personnel among his RBs either. Edge is too old, and I believe Hightower has the speed but not the skills to be a top RB.
There isn't a lot to go on in terms of playcalling and offensive stats. But he's been a top HC candidate on two other occasions (Chi and Pit) and both times he was really liked.
Yes, and your sentiment after the Herm Edwards comments (Steelers) was exactly how I felt about bringing someone who had a history with the Bucs at the time. They had the most dominant defense at the time and were challenging in the POs every year. Except Herm almost made more sense. Because he was a defensive assistant on a team whose success was founded with a dominant defense. Grimm is an offensive assistant from a team whose success was founded on a dominant defense. Will he be a good HC? It's possible. But I'm sick of this same formula over and over again. Because he's bound not to be successful with the Jets. It's no coincidence that rookie HCs almost never are with us.
It's going to happen again at some point. How often do you see established head coaches moving from team to team? Fact is, when hiring a new HC the Jets are going to have to take a risk somewhere. Every coach has a reason NOT to hire him.
He's got a sweet moustache. Never underestimate the power of a great moustache. Many of the great, powerful leaders in history all had formidable moustaches... Cheers, Danny
Isn't there some point where you have to stray from a formula that has proven time and again not to work for your franchise? The past 2 HCs have been risks, and have failed in the long run. Yes, the ultimate goal is to win a championship, and that is a rare achievement across a 32-team league. And yes, history doesn't define the future, so we could eventually win one with a guy who hasn't been an established HC or coordinator. And there have been plenty of great coordinators who have failed in the HC role. But in this market, New York, it's always been boom or bust pretty damn quickly. Hell, I'm almost to the point that I'd rather have a guy like Marty Schottenheimer just to build a dominant team just for the sake of building a true foundation rather than a 'good start' like we've had in the recent past - because it's easy for a new HC to abandon a 'good start', but not so easy and not even recommendable to abandon a solid core foundation that works. Over the time of Woody's ownership we've had 4 offensive schemes/coordinators and 4 defensive schemes/coordinators. You don't build a foundation by changing schemes every couple-few years because the personnel continues not to fit each new scheme. The other problem with this rookie HC/former assistant situation is the new guy's ability to assemble a competent CS around him. Herm was shelved with Cottrell and forced a scheme on him that he had never had success with. He also hired Hackett, who just plain sucked. Mangini assembled a cast of rookies around him. A guy like Tomlin had the foresight to leave Dick LeBeau in place and keep the scheme that had remained great over the years due to stability, instead of bringing the Tampa-2 defense with him, maybe because he realized that he hadn't been able to install that defense as well in Minny due to the difficulty to find the right kind of talent for that scheme. He didn't stuff square pegs into round holes. Herm and Mangini both made that mistake. Can we find a guy with that foresight? Sure we can. Will we? I'm not confident in this owner and FO's ability to do so. Which makes me want an established and experienced HC or coordinator more than ever.
