I think Mangini will go on to be a good coach, but he still has a lot to learn and unfortunately he's mistakes have left us with a very poor defense. Lets go ahead and label Gholston a bust, because I just don't see this guy being a big factor at all. I mean, I don't care how complex the 3-4 is I would've expected a little bit more impact from the 6th overall pick in the entire draft. Another big problem with our D is that we can't blitz and our LBers can't cover at all. Those are 2 huge issues with the 3-4 that Mangini should have accounted for but apparently he did not. IMO this is the main reason that Mangini should've gotten the boot, for his lack of foresight regarding these issues. The only thing our D does somehwat well is stop the run... aside from that, we are in big trouble. Now we also have the problem of trying to get a good coach in here that can work with this D... Rex Ryan isn't going to like it cause he won't be able to run his blitzes with our bulky and slow LBers. The Giants D coordinator guy isn't gonna like it cause he runs a 4-3 and we have ZERO pass rushers... you'd think that Gholston would have been able to make SOME noise out of our nickle packages, but he was invisible then either, but if there is any hope for this guy making any type of impact its going to have to be from a 4-3 scheme. So anyway, if anyone feels sad that Mangini was let go.. and some might think he was let go unjustly, then don't feel too bad about it... he does deserve a good chunk of the blame. Favre deserves the rest of it. I'm so fcking tired of players playing with injuries and not telling anyone about it. People see this as heroic, I see it as selfish.
I have been on vacation in Colorado for the past 2 weeks of so, and have been missing the hysteria this board has developed with all the HC talk . I cannot call Gholston a bust yet, if he is a ghost like he was this year next year, I could be persuaded to agree with you. The lack of pressure came from the lack of blitzing by Sutton, who should have been shown the door before Mangini or even seasons end. Way too many people dropping back into coverage. When we saw blitzes near the end of the year it was when the D was most successful, and it baffles everyone why we didn't blitz more. I would say that the fact our CBs couldn't cover is much more of an issue that our LBers not being good at it, and it probably made it stick out more too. I think NYJ has a lot more talent than most of the HC vacancies in the NFL... how many times have you ever said/heard/believed that? But we do have a good young core, just a holes to fill on D. While we do have the biggest question mark at QB, we have the talent to be a good team for a while. Mangini much like Pennington wore out his welcome with some terrible decision making at the end of the season when we needed it most. I was a Mangini supporter but after that SEA game, I knew he was gonna be gone. I agree Favre deserves some blame with what happened, and I think that players and media agree due to all the bashing Favre is getting in the media. I think he realizes it may be time to hang it up.
The first few weeks we were blitzing and getting pressure and sacks..than it stopped for some odd reason. So I have to think that's coaching
I have to disagree here. Sutton isn't great and should be gone as well, but he does not have a good blitzing team to work with. Whenever we dial up a blitz it takes FOREVER to get there... I don't blame Sutton / Mangini from being gun shy when it comes to blitzing when our personal is incapable of hitting their gaps correctly.
