Cutler could be Jets' QB fave

The Jets kicked off a cross-country quarterback tour over the weekend by having Easter dinner with Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler in Nashville. They'll stop in Los Angeles next before traveling to Austin, Tex., with a possible stop in Eugene, Ore., in between.

And while there's no guarantee the Jets will take a quarterback with the fourth pick in the April 29 draft, it's believed that the strong-armed Cutler would be their choice if they do.

"I think it would be fun," Cutler said on a conference call yesterday. "They've got a great staff there. They're trying to win ballgames. They've got a great owner that's backing the team. And I think it's a place that's looking up. It could be a great situation for me."

Cutler had dinner - an 18-ounce New York strip steak - with Jets owner Woody Johnson, GM Mike Tannenbaum, coach Eric Mangini and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer. That was followed by about five hours of "board work," Cutler said, before they wrapped things up with an extended workout yesterday morning. Cutler - who has visited the Titans (who have the third pick), Vikings (17th) and Rams (11th) and will visit the Lions (ninth) Thursday - said he "threw real well" in the workout after what he called an "erratic" start. "After the first five throws I kind of settled down and ended extremely strong," he said. "The last 20 throws were right on point. "

The Jets' brain trust left the workout and headed to L.A., where it will meet today with USC QB Matt Leinart, who will work out as well. Brass also will meet with USC tailback Reggie Bush, the presumptive No. 1 pick, though he will not work out. The Jets' traveling party is due in Austin on Thursday to work out Texas QB Vince Young. The day before, the foursome might go see Oregon QB Kellen Clemens, a possible later-round pick.

April 18, 2006 -- What very well may be a window into the Jets' thinking for the NFL Draft opened when big-armed Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler revealed that Team Mangini told him how important it is for a quarterback to be able to weather the forbidding elements at Giants Stadium.

This is a significant development because as a thrower of the football, Cutler clearly has the edge over Southern Cal's Matt Leinart, who will present his left-handed case today in Los Angeles for the Jets, and even Texas' Vince Young, who is on deck Thursday. Oregon's Kellen Clemens, possibly a second-round option, is up tomorrow.

"It's definitely gonna take a strong-armed guy to play in New York with the weather and wind," Cutler said from Nashville following what was, by all accounts, an impressive workout.

The conversation happened Sunday night at a dinner hosted by Woody Johnson and his Generation Jets - coach Eric Mangini, GM Mike Tannenbaum and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer. Cutler fittingly ordered the 18-ounce New York strip, but swears it was not because he was being grilled by the Jets.

The Jets, who own the fourth pick of the April 29 draft, mentioned John Elway and his big arm and big hands, and Vinny Testaverde, Tom Brady and Brett Favre, and Cutler got the message.

"How it might take a different-type quarterback to play in those type of conditions," he said.

Cutler to Jets: Sign me up.

"I've never had a problem gripping the ball," he said. "My arm is strong enough to get through some of that New York wind."

They also joked about what it would be like being young, single and a first-round draft pick in New York, which might also give Cutler the edge over Leinart, whose Hollywood Matt image could conceivably be a turnoff to Mangini and Tannenbaum. They aren't looking for another Broadway Joe as much as they are a regular Joe.

"I'd love to play for them; it would be a great challenge for me," Cutler said. "I think their offense fits me really well."

Cutler was asked why he would want to subject himself to the New York microscope. "You're gonna have pressure anywhere you go as a rookie quarterback drafted in the first round," Cutler said. "New York's obviously one of the bigger media markets in the world. I think it'll be fun. They got a great owner that's backing the team; it's a place that's looking up."

Cutler spent nearly five hours in the film / boardroom before processing everything on the field. "I think I started off a little erratic," he said. "After the first five throws I kinda settled down. The last 20 throws were right on point."

Cutler, who will work out Thursday for the Lions, offered the perfect answer when asked about the comparisons with Favre. "I have not even thrown an NFL pass," Cutler said. "I'm honored to be compared to him. I've got a lot left to prove before I can be mentioned in his league."

Vanderbilt offensive coordinator Jimmy Kiser is certain Cutler is the man for the Jets job. "He's what you want to build your team around," Kiser said by cellphone. "He's has all the intangible things you want in a quarterback."

With the NFL draft 11 days away, Jets officials have come up with one more category to add to the litany of statistical measurements that will determine whom they select in the first round: frequent-flyer miles.

After meeting with Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler in Nashville, Tenn., general manager Mike Tannenbaum and coach Eric Mangini flew to Los Angeles, where they will conduct private interviews today with running back Reggie Bush and quarterback Matt Leinart.

Then Tannenbaum and a team of scouts (though not necessarily Mangini) will head north to sit down with Oregon quarterback Kellen Clemens, who has risen as high as the second round on some prognosticators' draft boards. The cross-country fact-finding mission will conclude Thursday in Texas, where Tannenbaum & Co. will meet with Texas quarterback Vince Young.

With the fourth overall selection and a stockpile of picks necessary to trade up if they choose, the Jets seem to be trying to lead the league in face time with prospects. But with three quarterbacks on their interview list, does it necessarily mean the Jets are fixated on selecting an ultimate replacement for Chad Pennington?

No, said one person familiar with the organization's thinking. Jets officials are being so thorough partly because they recognize the risk inherent in taking a quarterback that high and could be looking to confirm their doubts about the top three QBs in the draft.

Then again, there is the smokescreen angle. Although the word is out across the league that the Jets are not seriously interested in trading up in the first round, their actions say otherwise. If nothing else, the Texans (No. 1), Saints (No. 2) and Titans (No. 3) know the Jets have done their homework.

The team also has met privately with North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams (a made-to-order replacement for John Abraham) and Virginia left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson, who visited Hofstra last week.

Then there is Ohio State linebacker A.J. Hawk, who is said to have drawn serious interest from the Saints. Hawk is not known to have a visit with the Jets lined up. But as a player some draft experts are calling a once-in-a-decade linebacker, it is hard to believe that Mangini would discount him.

Beyond the Texans' widely anticipated selection of Bush, the rest of the top 10 promises to be as unpredictable as the Jets' travel schedule.

NASHVILLE, April 17 ? The Jets completed the first leg of their tour of quarterback prospects for the N.F.L. draft, concluding a two-day meeting with Vanderbilt's Jay Cutler on Monday.

The Jets' owner, Woody Johnson, made the trip to Nashville to dine with Cutler on Sunday night ? Cutler ordered the New York strip at a steak house near campus ? along with General Manager Mike Tannenbaum, Coach Eric Mangini and the offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.

Johnson's presence was something of a surprise because owners do not usually take part in these sessions, but Johnson is becoming more involved with team operations.

Schottenheimer led Cutler through a breakdown of the Jets' offense at a blackboard on Sunday afternoon and Monday morning. In all, Cutler spent about five hours learning the offense before throwing in front of the Jets' contingent.

Later Monday, the Jets moved on to Los Angeles to meet with U.S.C. quarterback Matt Leinart, and they will meet with Texas quarterback Vince Young later in the week. Cutler, who has already had visits with the Titans, the Vikings and the Rams, is expected to travel to Detroit on Thursday to meet with the Lions.

"They're putting you in uncomfortable situations and seeing how you react," Cutler said in an interview Monday. "It's definitely nerve-racking."

Cutler said the interview was conducted with rapid-fire questions to test how quickly Cutler could absorb the offense.

Cutler said the Jets seemed to stress stretching the field and also discussed routes in which the pocket moved. The coaches also talked to Cutler about the strong gusts at Giants Stadium, but Cutler ? who has the strongest arm of the top three quarterbacks in the draft ? said he believed that would not be a problem, that his passes would slice through the wind.

"I could definitely see myself playing for them," Cutler said of the Jets.

Cutler threw to several of Vanderbilt's receivers and said that after an erratic start, his last 20 throws were on point.

The Jets, who have the fourth overall pick, have been circumspect about their intentions for the April 29-30 draft and did not tip their hand to Cutler. But he said he would be happy to land in New York.

"I think you're going to have pressure wherever you go," Cutler said. "I think it would be a great staff. It's a place that's looking up."

One thing is for sure this isn't going to be one of those years where all the Jets fans either booo the crap out of or cheer ecstatically for whoever is picked... there is going to be mixed reaction no matter who they draft.

At least Kyle Brady isn't in this years draft again.

While I would still prefer Leinart, now that the hype machine has slowed down a bit, Cutler would be an ok pick, but we would need to trade down a bit for me to be happy. I think Super Mario is a better player, along with D-Brick.

Jay Cutler spent a busy two days with the Jets. The Vanderbilt quarterback had dinner with team officials Sunday night in Nashville, Tenn., ordering his usual New York strip at Fleming's Prime restaurant. He schmoozed with owner Woody Johnson and compared offensive notes with general manager Mike Tannenbaum.

Cutler then spent hours in the classroom that night and more time on the Vandy practice field Monday showing coach Eric Mangini and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer his skills.

"I think I threw well," Cutler said. "I walked away feeling pretty good about it."

And he said he'd feel pretty good about becoming a Jet on the fourth pick of the April 29 draft.

"You're going to have pressures anywhere you go," Cutler said. "As a rookie quarterback in the first round there are a lot of pressures. People will scrutinize your every move. New York is one of the biggest media capitals in the world. I think it would be fun.

"They've got a great staff there, a great owner backing the team. It's a place that's looking up. They want to win ballgames."

The Jets promised Cutler nothing, of course, before continuing their cross-country talent tour. They stopped in South Carolina to work out Clemson cornerback Tye Hill, then flew to Los Angeles for today's meetings with Southern California's Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush.

I don't mind Cutler, but not at #4. That's just too high for him. Trade down a bit and I wouldn't mind grabbing him.

From the looks and sounds of it, it seems like the Jets really like Jay Cutler. Not just from a football standpoint. Off the field and on it. I really like Jay Cutler I just don't think its a "great" idea to draft him at 4...

There really is nothing wrong with him...he is a BIT of a reach at 4, but there is really nobody to trade down with...the only teams I would be willing to trade down with at Bills, Lions, or Cards...if one of those teams is willing to cough up another pick I am all for trading down and snagging the gunslinger.

You cant take a QB in the 1st rd there are too many holes to fill. If they trade down to get Cutler they need to be carefull because the Packers will take him at 5 for sure. You dont want a Favre/Nagle scenerio again. Plus that means they pass up on a sure player such as Williams,Hawk,and Ferguson.

These guys are good

No matter how you look at these guys are doing all they can to prepare for the draft ...

1) They are leaving no stone unturned as evidenced by the Tangini national tour. With alot at stake they have not taken the easy way out. They have a value board at this point but nothing is in stone until they hand that card to the Commish. Sit down and eat with these MotherFu*&ers, there is still something to learned about each of these guys.

2) They are, whether intentional or not, are F-ing with the GM's of the other teams by conducting this in-depth QB evaluation. IF they don't take a QB at #4 then this was a great poker move and will keep the other GM's guessing in future drafts as well. We could go from being the joke of the draft (see my thread on 2nd and 3rd round picks 87-00) to the Draft Masters.

3) They have not in any way given one damn clue as to who they desire or if they are looking to trade up or down. Everything we are getting might as well be from the STAR Magazine under the article on how Paris Hilton has an alien living in her ass.

Well Played Tangini. Well Played indeed.
