If you had to pick between these two coaching candidates, who would you prefer? As always, feel free to explain your choice. For the purpose of the debate, i am limiting the poll to these two guys. Feel free to discuss other candidates, but if someone put a gun to your head, and said pick Ryan or Spagnuolo, who is your pick for the next jets head coach?

I guess I'll start the debate. Rex Ryan is the guy I want, Fire, Experience, Agressive. Plays a 3-4. Whats not to like? In addition the Ravens have been a run first team for some time now. meaning he will likely bring that with him as well, agressive defense with a run first mindset, that can actually run? Sounds like a good formula for winning.

Also several starting defensive Ravens are up for fa this offseason. they cant keep them all, so as an added bonus, Ryan may be able to convince a few guys to come over with him, most notably Bart Scott.

Lot of reasons to love both guys, but Ryan is the guy I would very much like the Jets to hire.

no one else has an opinion on the matter? I think we can all agree these, are the top 2 assistants on our radar at the moment (unless of course you count our own, Brian Schottenheimer as a top assistant) So if we are hiring a non-headcoach ala Marty Schottenheimer, or Mike Shannahan, then i suppose we should try to get a feel of which top assistants that our board likes best.

rex runs a 3-4, has more experience, and is a better candidate because of this

Ryan runs the 46 Bear defense that his father invented.

Spagnuolo has impressed me much more than Ryan has. Spag's gameplan for last year's Superbowl was incredible, essentially stopping the greatest offense in the history of the NFL. Also, this year, despite losing both of the starting DE's from the Superbowl, he still is able to manufacture a pass rush.

Ryan inherited a great defense, with one of the greatest (if not the greatest) LB in the history of the game, Ray Lewis. Lewis's leadership skills greatly ease Ryan's job.

However, the 3-4 question is major. The same type of personnel works with a 3-4 defense, as you need larger defensive lineman and pass rush mainly coming from your outside backers. But, if Spagnuolo is able to work with the 3-4 defense that we have (see Tomlin in Pittsburgh), then he is clearly the most qualified canidate.

I go with Rex as well. 9 years with the Ravens 4th as the defensive coordinator and from what I've read the players love him. His defenses are incredible (although I credit Ed Reed tremendously for their success.)

Agreed on all points. i never said Spags wasnt a phenomenal coordinator and I fully expect him to be a great coach. But i am not sure he is the right fit here because he seems to be a 4-3 guy. If he can bring the 3-4, or bring in a DC with great knowledge of the 3-4 to run it, then Spags might be the best man for the job. But without knowing either of those things, I still pick Rex Ryan.

Yes he had a great defense handed to him, and he was handed the murdering son of a bitch, Ray Lewis, but he coached the defense, and he calls the plays, putting guys in the right spots to ensure its success. I also give Ed Reed more credit for the Defense than Lewis. guess who coached Reed? Rex Ryan. Another interesting question, since he clearly knows how to put Reed in the position to make those plays, can he do the same thing with Rhodes? Yes Rhodes isn't the same player as reed, but when given ample oppurtunity (unlike this year) Rhodes can make plays.

Ryan runs a multiple front defense thats predicated on the 3-4. Nobody runs a full time 46 defense anymore although it is still used as a change up front by Ryan

I don't think our personnel (minus KJ) are 3-4 guys anyway so that matters little to me.

Ryan has the edge in pedigree--I didn't know until this thread that he was Buddy's son. That means something to me. And if Buddy is still alive, which I think he is, he can advise his son.

Spags understands the NY mentality and may be able to handle it here a bit better.

I go with Ryan--and damn, I'm getting excited now thinking Buddy will be around!

If spags had as much to do with the SB run that I think he did he deserves a long look.

Billick's offense was a failure, and I'd take either one of the choices

After Billick and staff were fired, Ryan interviewed for the HC and didn't get it. He also interviewed for Miami and Atlanta. It worked out for all three of these teams.

Question: What is the chief reason that he wasn't hired by any of these teams last year?

Definitely a good point. But honestly, I was first gung-ho about Spags but the idea of Rex Ryan's aggressive defensive mindset with the 3-4 is appealing.

I'm starting to prefer going with Rex Ryan. Surely that means Rob would be our DC. That's insane.

Answer: I have no freaking clue why nobody wanted him last year. But as you can see, all 3 teams got a coach who works for them. My question with Harbaugh (Ravens HC) is, if you take Ryan and his defensive schemes away, is harbaugh still a great coach? Or was Ryan (Assistant HC) and his great defensive schemes a major part in baltimore winning this year?

I was shocked he was passed over last year, and now that we have an opening, I seriously want this guy around.

I thought Rob preferred his job in oakland? Also since he is still under contract with Oak (1 more year i believe) he cannot be brought to another coaching staff unless he is terminated from his current contract, by none other than Al Davis? I also hate rob as a DC, his defenses have sucked balls for years, with one abberation. Give me someone else, like say, Nolan or even Crennel before Rob Ryan. However if it ment we got Rex as a coach, I could live wiht rob at DC.
