everyone on the roster has been in a 4-3 before coming here.by my account we'd have too many de's on the roster and would be lacking a starting olb le-ellis/coleman dt-jenkins dt-pioha(sp) re-pace/gholston/thomas(who could be cut for all i care) olb barton(if they resign him) mlb-harris olb-plenty in the draft seems alright to me but i want marty so take it for what its worth
That 4-3 is worse than lining up in the 3-4. Ellis is too slow to be a 4-3 end, Pioha is doo-doo, Pace is unproven, Harris has not played MLB in a 4-3 in college or pros and is probably too slow (can we get Vilma back?).... The list goes on and on. That would require a major blow up and at least 2 years to rebuild if we are very very lucky. Spags is OK I guess, although I still dont know what the hype is all about with him. I think Rex Ryan is a better fit for our defense anyway.
I have to agree with you here. To put it further, there was no reason to be in Super Bowl or bust mode three years into a rookie HC's contract. There was definitely a lot of work to be down after Herm left that wasn't going to be completely turned around in two seasons. We were OK until we brought in Favre and then we were forced into a situation where we had to win or fail. I'm not going to blame Favre for this season (at least not in this post) but bringing him in definitely made us a "win now" team when we shouldn't have been. If we didn't make the Favre trade, we'd most likely be complaining about how much Clemens stunk up the place and how much promise Ratliff showed as he closed out the season.
Spags is a great answer if we are hoping for a long term solution. He has proven himself at least as a coordinator, but I always felt that the Giants would want to keep him to replace Coughlin. Plus it would be good to keep him in NY.
The disparity between what our lineup would be in a 4-3 vs. what the Giants have now could not be more painful. I give Spags a lot of credit for his defensive schemes - such as his "4 aces" package from last year where Kiwanuka, Tuck, Strahan, and Umenyiora were all on the d-line at the same time - but he would not have the talent that he had with the Giants and he has yet to have to build a team from scratch which he most certainly would have to do here. I'm not saying he can't do it but that's a huge roll of the dice to be taking right now when we can just improve on our current 3-4 scheme with the addition of two or three players (secondary not included). Rex Ryan would be the guy to look at if we want fiery, maybe even Rob Ryan. For my money, I'd rather go with Marty Schottenheimer. I'll take a couple of years sitting atop the division with a few 12 to 14 win seasons and some annoying playoff losses so long as he can build a team that'll be around for a while and can hand it off to a competent coach. If for no other reason, we'll get to keep our 3-4 and save the money it would take to convert it into a 4-3 and we'll finally get to see Leon take more than 3 carries a game.
