Sparano and John Harbaugh have proven that you dont need to be a former head coach/offensive coordinator/defensive coordinator to be a good HEAD coach. These guys were position coaches and jumped to head coach and have done great jobs. I think Westoff has the fire and tenacity to be a good head coach. Hire some good coordinators to run the offense and defense, and let Westoff serve in the adminstrative, management role ala Sparano and Harbaugh.
Let's not forget Cowher who is a former Special Teams Coach. Anyway, just because we see him yelling at people doesn't mean he'll make a good Head Coach.
I'd consider him over Callahan or especially Shotty if they're promoting from within. I think he's smart and it looked like he frequently advised Mangini on even non-ST related matters. Plus, as everyone knows he's got some fire in him. Love to see him swinging that cane at people.
Bingo. As I've said previously, if not for Justin Miller and Leon Washington, Westhoff wouldn't look like half the "genius" he does.
Didn't he make great KR's out of Chad Morton and someone else too? It seems like everyone who lines up at KR for Westhoff excels at it.
You're an idiot. Leon and Miller don't have stellar careers w/o his blocking schemes on kick returns and that move of Leon's to grab the ball with one foot out of bounds earlier this season was all Westhoff's coaching. Westhoff knows his aspect of the game better than any other coordinator in the league knows theirs. He was the only coordinator who impressed me this season and probably the best all around coach on the team.
He would smash favre in the skull with his big ass cane whenever he throws a stupid INT. I Wouldnt mind Westhoff as coach.
He's the special teams coordinator...Hardly enough to ask him to coach. I'd be happy if Shitty Jnr. was the HC than Westhoff.
Nice. Continue the insult parade. Anyway, how about our kicking game. Or rather, our total lack of one? How about all the penalties? How about Leon proving to be a stellar RB, without the benefit of Westhoff's blocking schemes? Yup. You're absolutely correct. He's a genius.
Westhoff has coached along side some of the greatest football coaches ever in Parcells and Shula. He has more football knowledge in his morning shits than most of us have in our entire body. He has been with this organization for years and would provide good continuity. The only problem I have with the hoff is that he's too old to be a long term solution. That's why I would offer him a 1 year interim deal and shoot for Cowher again next year when he's ready to coach.
Wasn't our special teams terrible the second half of the season? Everytime I looked up it seemed that way.
Normally I'd try and debate you point for point on this one, but I'm going to start here by taking the low road: you're ugly. Now, about Leon being a stellar RB: 1)Being a stellar RB doesn't make someone a stellar kick returner. Curtis Martin, Larry Johnson, Ladanian Tomlinson, Jim Brown, Emmit Smith, Adrian Peterson, Walter Payton...All great RB's, never great kick returners. Different skills are required for either position, some translate across to both, some don't. 2)Westhoff was a highly regarded ST coordinator well before Miller and Leon were ever in the league...or college for that matter. Try looking further back than two years ago, you might learn something.
IMO Westhoff would be a good move if we are trying to have a stopgap between Mangini and our next true head coach, but I am still leery about his ability to lead an entire team. He has only managed a small portion of the team, and I am unsure he would be good at controlling the entire team. He has done relatively well with managing his own players (with a few miscues on STs), but I can't honestly see him running the entire show, as he hasn't shown anything to this point to support that. Also, I have a feeling that a lot of Mangini's questionable calls this season were probably run through Westhoff before going to the field, since Mangini has said he has consulted Westhoff from time to time. On the other hand, having a special teams man as the head coach may increase the tendency for those tricky special teams plays like fake punts/kicks or onside kicks, since he would have more trust than a usual HC in the execution of his special teams. In the end, like the Mets using Jerry Manuel as a manager after firing Willie Randolph, I could see the guy behind the scenes for the Jets coming in and (hopefully) bringing us back from the terror of the 2008 collapse.
