http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/12/30/report-tannenbaums-presence-causes-cowher-to-pass-on-jets/ Interesting take. I agree with the analysis.
We have a chance to trade TANNY for COWHER and we're not doing it. WHAT THE FUCK IS WOODY THINKING? The man is INTERESTED!
These guys are the biggest ass clowns I've ever seen. I've written them many times and they never respond. Just look at this paragraph: "Tannenbaum signed Calvin Pace. Tannenbaum signed Damien Woody. Tannenbaum drafted Vernon Gholston. Tannenbaum traded for Brett Favre. Tannenbaum traded away John Abraham." This was a really good response: "However, your judgment of his record is DREADFUL. I must?ve missed how the signings of Pace and Woody were bad. HE TRADED ABRAHAM FOR MANGOLD. Mangold is a Pro Bowler this year. I must?ve missed Jane Abraham?s name on that list. The Favre thing didn?t work and Gholston has been slow to develop. Fine. Show me the GM with the perfect record. Ferguson was the 2nd alternate Tackle when Peters and Thomas were undeserving and got spots. He drafted pro bowler Leon Washington. He drafted pro bowler Darrelle Revis. He brought in pro bowlers Faneca and Jenkins. He took this running game from one of the worst in the league in 2006 and rebuilt it with 5 new players and made it one of the best. You weren?t telling us how bad the offseason was when the Jets are 8-3. So a five-game collapse when the team?s roster is flying high is the GM?s fault and not the coach?s? Tannenbaum put the pieces in place. Sure, not every move worked out. The Patriots spent high picks on Laurence Maroney and Chad Jackson. EVERY team makes mistakes. This roster is more talented than the one he was given. That?s a fact. "
I think Tannenbaum is getting too much flack. The only thing i think you can call him on is letting Pennington go, with no compensation. You can't blame him for wanting Favre, we all wanted him! Gholston was somebody that was high on a lot of boards, also. He was always viewed as raw, and everyone knew he would take some time to develope. The fact that you blame him for trading Abraham is bogus, also. Abe was always hurt. When he wouldn't play in that playoff game, he signed his ticket out of town. With most of our blessings! Overall, we have drafted well, the past 3 seasons. I can't fault Tanny, but i think he should take more of a back seat, when running the "on field" aspect of this team.
ugh: Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher, who rejected a chance to become head coach of the Browns last weekend, is not going to interview for the head coaching position of the New York Jets, according to multiple sources. Cowher, according to a source, has been contacted by the Jets. Although he is interested in the Jets job, he told the team he would not be a candidate because he would like to bring in his own personnel director. Jets owner Woody Johnson plans to keep Mike Tannenbaum as his general manager after firing Eric Mangini as head coach Monday. With Tannenbaum as the general manager, Cowher is willing to pass on the Jets opportunity, stay in broadcasting for another year and wait to return to coaching in 2010. Cowher has told friends the Jets job interested him for several reasons. First, Cowher would love to coach in the New York market. Second, two of his daughters are either going to school or working in the New York-New Jersey area. Cowher does plan to coach in 2010. In 2009, though, he was only willing to return if every situation was right for him. He wanted to have a two-year break from coaching to be with family and recharge. Last weekend, Cowher met with Browns owner Randy Lerner, who asked him what it would take financially for him to be the Browns head coach. Having a close relationship with the Rooney family in Pittsburgh and still wanting more time with the family, Cowher didn't give Lerner a price, and said no. Cowher recently extended his contract with CBS for another season. John Clayton covers the NFL for ESPN.com.
Forget Cowher, we're all making him out to be like Parcells. He's not coming. Now we've got to focus on Schwartz or Spagnaolo.
There is always more to every argument. First off, Tannenbaum hired Mangini and signed off on his assistants, who amazingly are still on the team. The Favre deal had failure written all over it from the start and has set the Jets QB situation back years. He wasted the #6 pick in the draft. Pace disappeared in the second half of the season. Woody I guess was okay as I don't remember him being constantly beat. And trading Abraham was clearly a mistake. The bigger issue I have is that Pittsburgh has for years been at the top of the league. They have one of the best, if not the best, organizations in all of sports. Even when they were down, it wasn't for long. If I owned the Jets and someone offered me the personnel men and coach of one of the best organizations in the league I'd close the deal in a heartbeat. What Cowher allegedly proposed would by far be the best move the Jets could ever make, and they'd be almost criminally negligent if they turn it down to keep Tannenbaum.
It's to early to say whether or not they wasted the #6 pick in the draft. We all knew he was very raw and would need time to develop. Remember when everyone was laughing at Houston after Mario Williams first year? Now he's one of the best DE's in the league and a legitimate game-changer. I think this year will be big for him. Pace disappeared but so did the defense. I think he's good and I like the signing.
Alright, lets get Dick Vermeil, Jon Gruden, or Brian Billick. They've won Super Bowls. I believe George Seifert may be available too. Winning a Super Bowl isn't the end all of being a great coach. A great coach is someone who wins nearly every year and does well in the playoffs. With your logic, no assistants will ever get an opportunity to become good head coaches because they'll be passed over for some old head coach who won a Super Bowl or got close to it. Terrible!
Titles, not Super Bowls. How many division titles? AFC Titles? NFC Titles? Why do the Jets always have to be the breeding ground for experiments? Who are the last 3 coaches to be hired by the Jets with a track record of success at that position?
I understand the argument that Tannenbaum made some good moves and made some good picks. But in the same light, couldn't you say Mangini's done a good job? He had a winning season with inferior talent, then went into the tank, but finally turned a 4-12 team into a 9-7 team. Doesn't that indicate at least the same level of success as Tannenbaum? So if you're going to dump Mangini for Favre, why not dump Tannenbaum for Cowher and the Steelers personnel men?
