I don't have the time, but I'm sure someone will dig up big name coaches and how many years it took them to get the SB (Cowher, Parcells, Belichick, Fisher, etc.).

Mangini had 2 of 3 winning seasons - he deserved at least another year to see if he was learning from his mistakes. Instability kills. I was very unhappy with the coaching down the stretch this year, but this is just unfare to Mangini, who gave up everything at NE to come here, and a mistake for this team. I just heard a lot of players (Cotchery and Jenkins included) are already speaking out about how upset they are - he did not seem to have a problem with relating to players, as many believed.

Mark my words, they are going to bring in a new coach with a "big" name (Marty, Billick, Mariucci, etc.) and hope to sell PSLs. Not one person I sit near is buying them (including me, I'm done going to games after next year as long as Woody still owns the team).

They are going to have problems and they made this move to sell PSLs - period!

Unfair how? And what did he give up? A coordinator's job for a head coaching position on a thin resume?

He gets PAID the last year of his contract. He chose the profession. He understands the life of a coach and the demands for performance. Eric presided over an 8-3 team that morphed into a 9-7 team. Still, he'll be paid for this year and next, and he'll find another job. I'm not going to shed any great tears for the guy. I wish he coached better and we wouldn't be in this position at all.

He gave up being the heir-apparant in NE. This was what upset Belichick.

Again, I was unhappy with the decisions down the stretch as well, but 2 of 3 winners for a very young rookie HC in NYC? Come on.

another thread about how everything the jets do is to sell psl's? wonderful.

i swear they could win the superbowl and someone would post a thread about how woody only wanted to win the superbowl to sell psl's.

You really think Favre and now this coaching change are about the team solidifying it's competitive future? It's pretty obvious what this front office is about since the new stadium was announced.

Not that I disagree but you do have to admit that is a novel way to ram PSL's down the fans throat.

lol, yeah thats kind of my point. it would be in woody's best interest to try to put a competitive team on the field because that is whats going to sell psl's. so i dont disagree that he is trying to sell psl's, im just saying attempting to make the team successful and selling the psl's go hand in hand.

he had to go because the team did the worst thing a team can do, and that was lay down. I would not even have cared if they lost the Seattle game if they at least tried. When you have big talent that underachieves its not a good sign for the management. Win a few Superbowls and people will happily pay. He tried, he took a chance and he failed (lets not forget he got paid handsomely too, he didn't volunteer his time here). Hopefully he can have a successful career somewhere, but I am in favor of the change.

That's where you're wrong. Building for a consistent, winning future and mortgaging it for a quick shot are very different. They've chosen the latter for financial reasons. There's no arguing that - it's obvious!

Definitely an argument to be made. This team showed no gut down the stretch.

if you wanna say favre was a quick shot thats fine, but assuming he retires after this yer he isn't affecting the cap and we are only losing a 3rd round pick. so after favre what about the team shows that it is being built for a quick run to sell some psl's?

agreed as well. Woody johnson is a fucking turd though, that guy disgusts me. He is one phony asshole. (not that almost all owners of nfl teams and big corporations arent but his mangini interview with tannenbaum this morning just made me laugh at this old fool) He looked like one of those "artsy" new yorkers with his horned rim glasses, all he needed was a cup of starbucks and a mac laptob or something. Sorry, I just had to get that off my chest, the guy just seems like a pindick.

Older vet signings (aside from Favre) and the next "big name" HC. Watch, they are not going to hire up and coming talent - they are going after the name fans want. Even if it's Cowher, whom I love, how many years did it take him to get to the SB?

We had a young, smart, coach (like they are praising in Atlanta, Miami, and elsewhere). Remember Bill in Cleveland? I'm not saying Mangini is going to be the next Bill, but we'll never know now (here, at least), will we?

the other vet signings will be around for a few years giving the team time to sign or draft a capable replacement for them. if the coach is cowher i will be thrilled. its the big name like you said, but he has proven he has the goods.

sure it took him 15 years to win the superbowl, but his team was in the conversation almost every year. if things had broken for him differently he could have won a superbowl much earlier. cowher will also come with his own handpicked coaching staff. maybe he brings along another guy like tomlin who is yong and can step in and run the same system when cowher leaves. i would also expect that cowher would be around at least 5 years with a max of 7 or 8 he is still a young guy as far as coaches go, and he has shown that he is a loyal guy.

if they get cowher it obviously could help some psl's but it should also help make the team successful bringing me back to the argument that trying to make the team successful and selling psl's are a joint effort.

I'll be happy with Cowher, agreed. I've just never been a fan of the "win now" mentality though, which this all reeks of. Doesn't work out too often and I hate to let a smart young coach go before he had a chance to learn from his mistakes. Who knows, he could've been the next Cowher, or Fisher, etc.

Belichick was upset because his heir apparent was heading off, instead of waiting for Bill to retire? First I've ever heard that one.

Eric had ONE year as a coordinator, vaulted up to head coach, made a little dough, and now he's risen into the next tier of coaching - all on a relatively thin resume. He'll be hired as a coordinator somewhere, maybe get consideration for head coaching positions, perhaps even settle into a nice college job for life. Again, all because his friend Mike Tannenbaum took a HUGE flyer on the guy. He lost nothing, came out on the plus side, and I don't feel very much sympathy at all.

I'm going to assume the "enough with the PSLs" crowd is, on average, under 25.
You'll understand how this all works one day. And I mean that seriously, not being a wise-ass at all.

Heir apparent??? What makes you think that? The guy was a coordinator for all of one year. Does he chew gum that well? The team had the division lead, had just beaten the Pats and the Titans, and just quit. They did not show up for the rest of the season. Something happened, and it wasn't PSL sales. That does have a big something to do with it, but if you think that's the sole reason they fired him, you're naive.
