Royal Tee, I don't think Woody has anything lined up at this point. He's not smart enough to do that. I just think he wants Favre back, so this is his best move to convince him to stay. With the stadium opening he doesn't want some unknown QB leading his club, even if Favre is totally washed up, he's a future Hall of Famer.
Marty Senior is one of the best of the re-tread lot. He wins (more or less) whereever he goes. He will not bring a SB Championship to NY. The one that makes the most sense to me -- other than Cowher -- is Gruden. Dennis Green--No. Reeves--No. Fassel--No. Bilick--No Tice--No. Holmgren--No.
Good coaches are good because they have good QBs. Bad coaches are bad cause they have bad qb's. Favre was horrible and he got Mangini fired.
With the history of the Jets, they'll probably drag their feet and lose out on the top candidates. Those that will be left we will have no interest in. After 3 months, they'll rehire Eric Mangini. At least at that point, he'll be "experienced".
Once he started playing regularly Pennington had one excellent year for the Jets (2002) and one good one (2004). All of the other years were very similar to Favre's year this year (roughly equal TDs and INTs (a total of 42 TDs and 40 INTs, 6.9 passing yards per attempt)), except that he wouldn't make it through the season healthy. Pennington clearly had a better year than Favre this year, but it is as much an aberration given the general pattern as Favre's 2007 year for the Packers was. To me, the big mistake was thinking that Favre could do it again, not failing to anticipate that Pennington could.
The problem was Sutton and Schottenheimer, not Mangini, and not Favre. I'm a little disappointed that Mangini got canned, but it was deserved. As I've said all along, if you can't get your coordinators to call a decent game, you're directly responsible. The total lack of a pass rush as the season went on is on Sutton's shoulders. The total lack of a rushing attack is on Schottenheimer's shoulders. I'm not trying to excuse the play of guys like Favre or Jenkins, but for crying-out-loud, if the coordinators never call plays that work against the opposition, how can anyone expect those players to excel?
Bingo. As much as I still think Mangini can be a good coach and still might be a good coach, when both coordinators fail, and the team collapses the way it did, the coach is ultimately at fault.
That's BS Good coaches are good if they have good players and more importantly..a strong coaching staff. Case in point...the Ravens won a Super Bowl with a mediocre QB in Trent Dilfer. Brian Billick's DC Marvin Lewis turned that defense loose because he had Ray Lewis, Tony Siragusa and Chris McAlister making plays. Tampa Bay won a Super Bowl with Brad Johnson at QB, because Monte Kiffin had a strong defense with playmakers like Derrick Brooks,Smeon rice and Ronde Barber. Favre didn't get Mangini fired. Mangini got Mangini fired. He relied on two inept coordinators who concocted weak gameplans week after week.
I think it's the way we lost yesterday that must have sealed if for Mangini. Miami scored both of its offensive touchdowns on passes of +20-yards - not to mention that bizarre 40-yard pass into double coverage in the middle of the field - from a guy with a notoriously weak arm. Their other points came off of a blocked punt and a boneheaded interception. This wasn't isolated idiocy. We lost four of the last five, and as Shaun Ellis even said, it SHOULD have been five of the last five. That sort of consistency topped with just an atrocious display of football in a must-win game has to have consequences at the top. Sutton and Schotty go too, for their contributions. And, frankly, I don't see any compelling need to keep Westhoff around anymore either. But it all has to start at the top, and we were getting worse, not better. The only reason we didn't lose more games than seven is because the NFL mercifully only schedules 16 games.
I just don't think Marty is cut out for New York. He's old school and I think the media tends chew people like that up. It reminds of Art Howe as manager of the Mets. Nice man,but didn't seem like he had a clue. A total bad fit. I'd consider Billick. He's a good coach, but not the offensive wizard everyone thought he was. Actually he and Dennis Green made a good team. Put some players with these guys, I think they could get it done.
Yeah , The Mangini days are over. They weren't to bad i mean the guy tried but he just wasn't ready. Now its our time. Get Cowher!
Holmgren - that's a name I hadn't thought of. He swears he's taking a year off. But would it entice him to work with Brett again? Or work with a talented young QB (drafted or on the team already)? He's a great offensive mind and QB coach. I'd love for the Jets to get him. But I think he's serious about not doing anything next season. So I think it's unlikely we get him. Which is too bad.
Unfortunately, the Jets cannot pick and choose their next coach because most previously successful coaches have no interest in working for this less than prestigious franchise.
whats hilarious is, Herm Edwards is still the coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. That sucker stayed longer then Mangina
Heh. . . funny. Herm has motivated KC to 9-7, 4-12, and 2-14 and he's somehow "rebuilding." I can't believe he's long for this world.
