There's a good chance there will be no cap after next season.

CBA does expire in 2010, but the great protagonist of "no salary cap" aka Gene Upshaw is dead.

Again, the cap trouble arises with Favre's 13 million dollar number. Perhaps we are under the cap by some amount, but this is a team that clearly needs to fill some holes on the defense. Having some cap flexibility to pursue FAs is the key issue.

Ugh.... $13M is Favre's base salary. If he retires/released, that number is gone. Please, learn the facts before you speak and misguide people. Thank you.

He hasn't retired and he hasn't been released yet. As far as I am concerned, it is relavent to bring it up.

Are we not using this forum to discuss all possible scenarios, albeit if retirement or release looms??

If anything, Upshaw's death makes it more likely 2010 will be uncapped. Without a clear leadership situation in the Players Association, it will be more difficult to strike a deal.

I am thinking that with the recession in play money will be tighter especially in advertising. I think their will be a salary cap with the rationale being so the smaller markets can field a team that has some sort of chance to compete with the East and West Coast teams.

I'm not worried about the cap one bit. Tanny is a cap guru, he knows what he's doing, and he's done a heck of a job the last few years.

Mangini has to go, but I want Tanny back next season.

Gene Upshaw was a perfect example of someone who had acquired too much power, I think people really feared him. The political shift to a replacement bodes well for the owners in working out a deal to keep the cap in place.
The next director of the NFLPA, if its either Troy Vincent or Trace Armstrong will probably be more benign and easier to negotiate with.

It is about time you Jet fans realized the sure cap troubles to come. I hope you enjoyed all the money you guys threw at Free Agents, because it sure didn't work out. As for Salary Cap being gone after next season, won't happen. The MLB is a prime reason as to why a Salary Cap is needed. I'm sure the NFL does not want to become a joke like the MLB is, therefore, Salary Cap will be returning. Like I said, enjoy Faneca and Pace and the rest of your FA's you signed this past offseason.

dude tanny is a cap guru hes not a personel gm, i think hes got it under control. We have alot of room to cut where it needs to be, namely 13 mil when favre leaves.

i could start a list of people but ill just name a few now

    Favre
    B Thomas
    Gholston, GTFO
    Barret
    Law
    Nugent
    Coles(hard tho)

    Speculating about the cap already?

A little early. First wait and see if Brett comes back, and wait for team cuts. Then see what is what.

We have no idea who is going to be retained, restructured, retired...etc.

Cap guru before he said "Fuck it, let's just try and buy us a Superbowl".

Now he's just another idiot. While I will agree, he can make that cap manageable by making cuts. Unfortunately, those cuts will be some of your better players, and that would be just to make the cap manageable, not to free up room for any additional Free Agents. Boy does it warm my heart to see teams try to buy championships and then fail miserably.

You have no clue what you're talking about. But please, continue, because it's mildly entertaining.

    Buy championships?

Did the Phins get all their players for free?

    The cap rises every year.
