The Jets built a team that was supposed to run the ball, stop the run and not give up big plays. The idea was that we wouldn't turn the ball over we would be able to wear out other teams and win close games. Then Woody/Tannenbaum/Mangini decided to get Favre. I think they believed that Pennington would get hurt again which based on his career was likely to happen. Unfortunately they brought in the wrong QB for this team and this coach. No coach has ever been able to control Favre and Mangini would be no different. Nothing bothers Mangini more then turnovers and Favre has been a turnover machine. Favre has had five great games this year: Miami 15/22 194 2 TD/0 INT 125.9 Rating Arizona 24/34 289 6/1 123.7 Rating St. Louis 14/19 126 1/0 117.7 Rating NE 26/33 258 2/0 119.4 Rating Tenn 25/32 224 2/1 103.6 Rating Favre has had 7 horrible games: Cincy 25/33 189 1/2 73.9 Rating Oakland 21/38 197 0/2 47.8 Rating KC 28/40 290 2/3 76.0 Rating Denver 23/43 247 0/1 60.9 Rating SF 20/31 137 0/1 60.8 Rating Buff 17/30 207 1/2 61.4 Rating Seattle 18/31 187 0/2 48.7 Rating I'm certainly not going to say that Mangini doesn't deserve blame for this season but I believe that these seven horrible games from Favre are the reason the Jets are in the situation they are in right now. Somehow we did manage to win one of these games but the other six Favre could not have played much worse. He had 4 td's and 13 picks! Read that again: 4/13 td/int ratio. He basically put the team is such a bad spot that everything else fell apart including the coaches. it sort of reminds of how the Mets bullpen wound up destroying the rest of the team. Fave can win any game but he also destroy a season with his bad games. I'm not saying Mangini is the answer long term but I think as fans we need to realize that Favre is the main reason this team went down the drain.
i believe it's the other way around actually (coaches putting players in bad position). i'm not excusing brett for playing poorly during any games but that's definitely how it looked to me. I do hate it when coaches say poor play just came down to a lack of execution. well, it's the coaches' jobs to put the players in the best position to succeed, and I don't think our guys did that for the majority of the year.
How can you explain the 13 picks? Was that in the game plan? Was the game plan that bad against the pats and titans?
You know, I think a lot of Jets players have noticed this, too. I think as a player you can deal with anything the QB does except making bone headed throws where he has no business going. Not all of Brett's picks were like that, but there have been a lot that were just plain stupid.
To me the bottom line is after the TEN game, at 8-3, I assumed that all of the "time to learn the system, and gelling" was over. Favre was poised to have a big second half. What happened? We learned that we have a QB that still makes poor decisions and clearly can not make the throws he once could. I think he realizes that too. I was in favor of getting Brett but, We went from a smart QB that could not make all the throws, to a dumb QB that could not make all the throws
I liked the decision as well but I was worried that he would not work well with this team. I thought it was an upgrade since Pennington usually can't stay on the field.
If you see a team repeatedly call shotgun on 3rd and short, you know the coaches are not putting the players in a position where they can succeed on a regular basis.
Agree...when the players start throwing ints, the coaches should be blamed because they could have had the backups play for that one snap...rite? How do u blame a pick on the coaches? I will not defend the coaches as far as play calling...but poor judgement and bad throws can never be thrown on the coach's shoulder.
Or other teams adjusted to the Jets offense, the Jets continued to do the same damn thing and blame the players for their lack of execution, they lose the team, the team tanks 4 out of 5 games. Or it could be the QB. I am sure he has everything to do with the crappy D and the crappy ST.
You don't think that Favre has any say in the play calling? The entire offensive right now is geared to what he wanted. Everything they were doing pre Favre has changed. I hate the offense now but it's what the QB felt works best for him.
The only thing I have seen that has changed is all the shifting. How many times were the Jets in empty last year? I bet we were top 5.
Are you a retard? You seriously can't figure out why a pick would be a coach's fault? Do you look at the plays or do you just see the result? The coaches call and draw up the plays, the coaches also oversee practice where you're supposed to develop chemistry. Here is how a pick would happen: in a certain situation you run the same exact formation and the same play off of it each time. The opposing coach sees this, and tells his team to watch for it. This happened to Chad all last year on the out, it was obvious it was coming and it would get picked each time. Now look at Chad on a less predictable offense with better playcalling and play design. Favre last year went 13-3 and had 28 TD 14 INT or something like that. This year without Favre they are 5-10 with essentially the same players and coaching, so it's not like it was just the system. Now for the Jets, if you watch, a lot of times we only have 2 men running routes, and they're usually really DEEP routes that just get double or triple covered, and a short checkoff option. Since we always run it, they can just cover the dump off option or cut it short with a zone, while doubling up the deep WRs with safety help. If Favre is in the shotgun, they don't worry about the weakness to this which is the run. Since the routes are all really deep, they just run the safety deep over the top and play the ball. Just horrid, horrid play design and play calling. If you know anything about offense, there is no way you can be happy with it. There is nothing you can do, the players are put in horrible positions. The most galling was that dumb 4th and 2 play. Where was Favre supposed to go with the ball exactly? I think Coles was the only person in the route, I can't even remember seeing anyone else. I don't get it. I just don't get it.
