His OP may prove the answer to this question, but Elam did start at LB yesterday...

I think it's almost impossible to just use players on our roster already, because lets face it , next year will have alot of new faces, just like this year. Our defense was so bad this year that there will be a whole category on family feud of quarterbacks who have thrown for 250 + yards against the 2008 Jets. There's a couple players that could really help us out next year. First of all we need to Address the DE position that is currently occupied by Kenyon Coleman and CO., there is a great young talent by the name of Brian Robison on the Vikings right now, who has seen playing time severely limited by the arrival of Jared Allen. Another guy to look at will be Terrell Suggs from the Ravens, we all know he's a beast and there is a chance he will not be franchised again next year. On top of all this add a solid CB along with a new defensive coordinator and we are in business.

If VerNONE GHOSTon was anything it would have made a huge difference for our D.

They desperately need a pass rusher, and ole' John Abraham is tearing sh*t up in Atlanta.

Abraham is always hurt and they got Mangold for him. I'm not upset about that.

Hopefully Gholston will be a player. They need a new DE to replace Kenyon Coleman. Somebody who can get to the QB.

That's not how a 3-4 defense works, Coleman is not the problem with this defense.

First of all, MeanGreen, regarding Brian Robison: I saw him as a 3-4 OLB coming out of Texas. He is NOT, in any way shape or form, a 3-4 DE. He would be an incredible strong side linebacker in the 3-4, especially in a Merriman role, where he is rushing 80% of the time.

    Secondly:

SHAWN Ellis plays LDE, which is almost always the strong side. Gholston would play RDE, which is almost always the weak side. Run stopper strong side, pass rusher weak side, that's how it has always worked. ALWAYS.

Pouha doesn't have the speed off the line to be a reduced tackle or the strength to be a nose. He is strictly a backup. C.J. Mosley, however, has very good speed and strength and could be our reduced tackle should we play in a 4-3.

David Harris is a strong side linebacker in the 4-3, and Calvin Pace is lost in that scheme. He has found a home in the 3-4. It is what he is meant to do. Abram Elam is too small even for a weak side linebacker. He would have to handle TEs out of the ace and fullbacks out of the I. You really think he won't get his ass handed to him every time?

Lowery isn't a hard hitter. He is great at punching the ball out, which is where his forced fumbles come from. Two safeties that can't hit hard? Not a good idea.

Rhodes is well, Rhodes. You can't really go wrong with him unless you play him twenty yards deep on every fucking play. Cough. Cough.

I've said it once, I'll say it again: IF YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT FOOTBALL SCHEMES, DON'T TALK ABOUT CHANGING THEM.

Well maybe we should look at him for that purpose then. Did not follow him in college and only found little footage from the pro's , and his numbers are better already than Coleman's best year ever. Thanks for the clarification though and looking at it a little closer , at 259 lbs maybe he is better suited for the LB spot on a 3-4

Elam isn't the answer at LB. If you want to go to a 4-3 then re-sign Vilma as a FA or draft a guy like Laurinatis who can play in either scheme.

    Someone light the Petrozza Signal.

It's kind of like the bat signal, only made up of a pile of photos.

We already have Pace for that role, though. We are STACKED at OLB, and just aren't using them right. If you remember from I think two weekends ago, the CBS commentators said something that I noticed but never thought to mention - That the Jets defensive players seem to not be going after the quarterback but are concentrating on holding their lanes to contain the QB when pass rushing. That's really what they've been doing. After being gashed by Cassel, the CS seemed to get scared of QBs moving around. Remember how they did that against Hill, then again against Losman, then repeated it this weekend against Wallace?

There are three things that need to change about this defense for it to be dominant in all aspects of the game:

    1. Rushing the QB. There need to be more blitzes, more alignment shifts, mixed coverages, and the mentality when pass rushing needs to be "kill the QB", not "stop the QB from getting away".
    2. Safety opposite Rhodes. Rhodes is an excellent safety who only lacks in one category, and that's big hits. You need another Safety to team with Rhodes who can hit hard and won't get burned in coverage. Rhodes used to work wonders covering the TE in 06' and 07'. He would play shallow zones and cover the TE, and that's where his success came, not playing over the top in a deep zone like the Jets have him doing now.
    3. An ILB to team with Harris. Harris is good and he covers well for his speed but he just isn't fast enough. This was the same issue that we had with Victor Hobson, who was a great tackler, played the run amazingly, and whose only pass rushing move was a bull rush. They're basically the same player at two different positions (obviously Harris is better, but when you look at strengths/weaknesses, they are the same). The Jets need a faster linebacker who doesn't have to stuff the run but needs to be able to not get blown off the point of attack like our old favorite, Vilma. Safeties are supposed to cover Tight Ends in man coverage. Linebackers are supposed to use their lateral speed and agility to force running backs towards the sideline. It doesn't quite work with Tight Ends.
