I want to keep Tannenbaum. I am comfortable with him at the helm. I think he deserves a mulligan for the Mangini hiring because at the time, it looked like a good move to hire a Belichick assistant who would be the polar opposite of Herm Edwards. He hasn't been perfect, but I'd say at least 70% of his moves have been good. He needs to make a coaching change.
That's an excellent point. Tanny has kept up his part of the bargain of Tangini. He's a class A GM and I want him to stay. But Mangini did not do his part after the first year. And this year Tanny supplied him with the goods and more. With this soft schedule, and many injuries to the other teams we played (eg., 2nd string QB's), and our players, it is absurd that we should be in this position. Mangini and his crew need to all be fired--but I would like to try to keep Westhoff but thats up to the next guy. Maybe Callahan too. For whatever reason, Bryon (Brian) Cox could not pass on his fiery attitude to this group of LB's and hence, he should go too.
Tannenbaum also brought in Gholston so he isn't completely off the hook. My guess is he goes along with Mangini but only if Johnson wants to get serious about a coach for the first time since he owned the team. If they wanted to bring in Cowher he would want complete control as would any elite coach coming to this team.
I strongly disagree with all of these points. 1. You ask what the big-name free agent signings have done? Signing Faneca and Woody has dramatically upgraded our O-Line from one of the worst I can ever recall watching to one of the better in the NFL - featuring excellent run-blocking, generally decent pass-blocking, and 2 Pro Bowlers. Signing Jenkins has dramatically upgraded our Run-D form one of the worst in the NFL to one of the best. 2. You call his drafting subpar at best? I would easily call his drafts among the best the Jets have ever had. The jury's out on Gholston, but Keller's a huge pick that nobody was talking about before the draft. Lowery is developing into a decent CB for a 4th round pick. Revis and Harris were outstanding picks. Brick and Mangold have developed into the core of an outstanding O-Line. And Leon is an absolute steal in the 4th round. 3. You say his assessment of offensive linemen is poor? I again point to the O-Line's success this year (pretty much the only unit on the whole team that's succeeding) as evidence that his evaluation of offensive linemen is fine. There was ZERO dropoff from Mawae to Mangold. And Tanny is largely responsible (along with Callahan, whom Tanny hired) for the huge upgrade in the talent at that position. We're all upset about how things went today and for the last few weeks. But, honestly, Tannenbaum is NOT the problem with this team. And I, for one, would be very disappointed if they let this outstanding GM go.
Tannenbaum, for whatever good he has done, must go too. Its enough already with the glimmers of hope and bullshit excuses. There are no corners left to hide in. If you leave even a bit of the cancer behind it may come back.
I think Tannenbaum has done an excellent job since he's been here. Sure there were a few bad moves but no GM is going to be perfect. I think the job he's done bringing solid players into the organization only proves how inept the coaching staff is.
I'd like to give Tannenbaum another chance to bring in a top coach. So far his drafts have been very good, even if Gholston pans out or not. He's done everything he can in FA to get the players to fit Mangini's system, there's not excuse that we're playing so badly. If I'm the owner I'd probably like to hear who Tannenbaum wants to bring in next, if it's another scrub then maybe it's time to clear out the FO as well as the CS. If Tannenbaum can bring in a great coach or at least a Co-ordinator with a great track record then he deserves to stay.
Favre was a complete bust but faneca helped improve an awful OL and helped our underachieving C and LT become PB caliber players.
