This post is a discussion of how the JETS are precieved by the rest of the football world. As a true tenured jet fan, I have an inseperable image of the jets as doormats that NO BODY wants to play for- or coach for. But Bill Parcelles changed that to a degree. Since that era, we have been a 'tweener' team. Not a doormat, but not a 'premier' team either. We've had our flashes (beating Jacksonville on Key's determination alone, Chrebet the '3rd down king', Mangini's first year, someone 'finally' pushing NE to the side, and a few more feathers). But where are we now? What were players like Faneca, Jenkins, Pace, Favre thinking coming here? These are players we would NEVER, and I do mean N-E-V-E-R, have gotten to come here just a few years ago (Lynch anybody? Or Eli Manning going to SD over his dad's dead body?). Moving on to coaching, I truely hope Mangini is the 'guy', and his even keeled demeaner takes us to the promise land. But if Mangini eats a slice of rotten pizza and kneels over... ...are the NY Jets capable of attracting coaches like Bill Cowher? For real? What do all-star players and top coaches look for when making their 'ultimate' decision? For players, it's money and a real chance for the ring. Brett chose us over the Bucs simply because he felt a chance at the ring was better here than florida. Cowher? How does someone like Cowher make the tough call? He could realistically go ANYWHERE. Money? About the same. Ring? Who wants to earn someone else's ring? Coaches LOVE to pee on the fire hydrant so any ring that comes their way is "theirs". By this I mean that the current stable of players and the liklihood of hitting paydirt 'soon' (all important to free agents) is less important to potential head coaches. Perhaps Parcells is onto something by taking over teams that are 1-15. For the first time since Willy Joe we can attract real talent on the field. How are the Jets viewed by the football world? Free agents? Coaches? Have we arrived? What are your thoughts? I'm semi-convinced that good things lie just ahead.
Every team in the past 20 years, with the notable exception of the Ravens "arrives" when there's a stable franchise QB. Our being a "tweener" the past 8 years is representative of the fact. Chad is/was a tweener QB. Favre is a premiere QB. Sadly, we know Favre isn't going to to stay for very long (1 more year tops). I think the one team we can say for sure that's "arrived" is Atlanta and maybe Denver.
I think a big reason is Tannenbaum. Even if Mangini never pans out (although I think he will once he grows into it a little more), we have found ourselves a great young GM for many years. Look at his track record of trades, drafts and free agents signings. There has been such an influx of talent to this roster under his watch, the likes of which has never been seen by the Jets. Well maybe Parcells, but he put us in cap hell in the process. Tanny managed to do it while keeping us financially stable. I think having a creative, intelligent, and capable GM goes a long way to attracting quality players and coaches.
well favre was sorta traded here. but he did have the chance to basically null the trade but i guess saw enough good here not to do that
...and the way he got past the 4-12 to see the good is because Tannenbaum put the full court press on him.
i'm glad he sees it's okay to fill in th major holes via free agency (ie. Jenkins). but he's gonna have to start building more through the draft since the team basically as no cap room from all the free agent signings.
true that. by the sounds of it (from what favre has related) he really persuaded favre into liking this team
Oh, you mean like Brick, Mangold, Washington, Revis, Harris, Lowery, Keller, and Stuckey. Or getting players from other teams practice squads like Clowney? Or looking at UFAs like Ratliff? Or signing our young talent, like Cotchery, Thomas, and Rhodes, to realitively cheap long term contracts. Or do you mean getting draft picks for players via trade, before we lose them for nothing at the end of their contracts? Like Abraham, Kendall, Vilma, Robertson? And Jenkins, Jones, Favre, they came via trades not free agency. Also I wouldn't worry about the cap, it goes up again next year, and the CBA wasn't renewed. Plus Tanny is a cap Guru.
They were thinking the opposite of what the fans of this team think. They thought that this team was and is going somewhere.
The better question IMO is "if Tanny left with Mangini, what does that say about Mangini?" I mean it says some good...some bad about both guys...but personally I think that long term that's going to be a great combo.
Here's my take on my beloved Jets. The Jets have always been under served by all of their coaches. With the exception of Walt and Weeb , we have never had a pillar of strength to stand behind. Now I know people will say "What a bout parcells" ,. well he did bring us respectability , but he mortgaged the future to win now. (Sound familiar). He also played games with whether he was going to remain a coach , ultimately only to try on the general managers roll. Al grohl left us in a heart beat (no thought necessary) and Herm was a coach under development , who inherited a good team that he rode for the time he was here until it was broken. Mangini inherited a healed team with some defensive problems and has done the best he can. Eric Mangini is also a coach in training and seems to be following all of our past coaches approach. Just wait out the time it will take till all of our coaches ,assistants , and coordinators come around to winning ways. Sometimes that takes way too long. In the NFL we have been perceived at certain times as contenders , but never as the elite (Maybe 98). we have had some great players and some mega-stars , but an all round team of great player....Not in a long time. The status Quo for the Jets is they will fold or they will commit the error ; so your never out of it when it comes to the Jets. The sport writers have all had a predominately negative attitude about the Jets , mainly because we usually go down in flames and do something that will go down as a bad moment in Jets history. Jets fans are the way they are deservedly so..... Its like a prom date that never shows up! My heart can be broken for only so many times before it time for a little counseling or hospitalization (mental or otherwise). We have seen many years of promise and ultimate defeat and the prospects of a bright future that either do not materialize or get blown up in our face. Some Jump ship while others stay faithful and call their fathers to reassure them "Its going to be alright , just hang in there". I will be watching and waiting ........DAD!
Tannenbaum is the GM. It would be his decision to fire Mangini. That's not going to happen. Woody is not a hands on owner. If Mangini goes, Woody would have to fire both.
I think having the new facility over time is going to help and even the new stadium, as needless as it was to build. The days of practicing at Hofstra and staying overnight to play home games at the Giants' stadium couldn't have been too attractive and thankfully are pretty much done. When guys come in to visit in the future and see a first-class facility and a team that has normal home games, it will be a lot better than it used to be.
^^^new stadium is something i didn't think about. as far as attracting top coaches, it has to fall on the organization starting with the owner. is he a micro manager (jerry jones)? is he and asshole (al davis)? is he so tight with spending you couldn't pull a greased screw driver out of his ass with a bulldozer? how's the GM? how's the drafting? parcells always wanted to 'buy the groceries' or at least have a ton of say in who gets drafted and what free agents come in. i'd say johnson is a good owner....stays out of things but opens up the checkbook, and tanny has a good rep of working well with the coach and bringing in great players. throw in a new stadium and someone like cowher just might tag us.
