Excellent post, my friend. You've encompassed everything that any down-to-earth, intelligent Jet Fan would see from this team over the course of the season. I'm seeing a pattern with Mangini as well....his gameplans are rigid (meaning, he doesn't make necessary adjustments when things aren't going the Jets' way)...you don't see him coaching the players on the sidelines during games....he continues to let Bob Sutton make a mockery of our defense...shows no emotion. It seems he's content with things being status quo....Parcells would never have let the team sink into mediochrity like this, without making adjustments. I'm tired of it.
I Agree with no firing Mangini, the dude is still young and at times makes mental mistakes, but I feel like he's coming into his own and once he gets the full amount of personnel on this Jets team then we will truly see Mangenius for a full season INCLUDING the playoffs, the guy has alot of potential to be a great coach, at this point he's a good coach that makes mental mistakes but when he shows up, he shows up BIG
I have to disagree with you on that one point. The Jets have a VERY talented team and a schedule that is extremely favorable. If they manage to not make the playoffs despite all this then Mangini needs to go. I just don't think there is any excuse for not making the playoffs at this point.
:lol: Why? And to be clear, GSour Jr, you want Mangini fired right after the Seattle game, before the Miami game? At 9-6?
I don't believe at this point that the Jets actually have an offensive game plan going into each game. They're clearly not scripting the first few drives because only a thoroughly retarded coaching staff would be scripting run on first down, pass on second down the way the Jets have been going recently. That leaves them likely just reacting to the down and yard positions on each play, which is what it looks like they are doing. Similarly on defense there's no way they have a game plan to attack the opponent from the get-go. They are just reacting on everything. The Jets play-calling would be more intelligent if they just accepted electronic input from every Madden 2008 player in the tri-state area and took the play called most often by that group.
Let Favre call his own plays. I don't mind giving Mangini another year, but not Schotty or Sutton. And I don't want a promotion guy, I want a proven coordinator.
sad, but true. It's not like i'm disappointed with our 9-5 record...but watching the Jets through 15 weeks...it looks like "smoke & mirrors" to me...our record is a product of our schedule (not including the the Pats win and the Titans win)...we should have 11-12 wins at this point...with the talent on our roster. It's amazing that some of the people on this board fail to open there eyes to see what's really going on....and that's our coaching staff is sub-par. It's bad enough we have trouble winning the games considered "big" games.....but we can't beat the teams we should steam roll (Oak, SF, Den). The front office needs to bring in a proven coaching staff who know how to COACH and WIN this offseason. Mangini is nothing but Belichick's sloppy seconds....and Woody Johnson is the Dion Phaneuf of this league....enjoying the fruits of somebody else's sloppy seconds. Let's quit spinning our wheels with Mangini. /end rant
The situation has been even more favorable than that. We have had a favorable situation virtually every week this season. We got to play the pats w/o Brady twice. Merriman and LT are hurt when we play the Chargers. We played both Oakland and SF after during the season coaching changes. Buffalo has an injured defensive lineman the week they play us. Tennessee's secondary is banged up and starting people who were on the street the previous week. Denver is playing their 5th(?) RB of the season when they meet us. This is why all the posts that include, "We all predicted 10-6 so why be upset" get me steamed. We didn't predict that everything would fall our way outside the game when we made those predictions and yet things could hardly have been better. The Jets have failed to capitalize on the advantages that have been handed to them over and over again this season.
Right on man... there is a lot to be happy about this team, even if we are having a bit of a slump or blowing a game or two. This happens to every good team along the way now and again. Hell, I can't believe the bitching I'm seeing when we actually won this past week, even against a division rival that always plays us tough. Despite some mistakes along the way (like the Kendall debacle) this CS/FO has proven they can learn, adapt, and improve this team. All the bellyaching is ridiculous. We still have two more games to play. We are still in a tie for first place. Let's see how it ends people! :breakdance:
If I may add my 2 cent to the train of thought, I think what is driving most long time fans like myself crazy is, the pattern of forever losing to teams we should be rolling over. This is so much a part of Jets history it's ingrained into old guys like myself. That's why I never say or agree with anyone else who says, "oh, the Jets are going to kill those guys"!. I have seen all too often this team play down to the level of the other team. An this was long before Mangini or Herm, or Groh, Kottie, etc. The only one who seem to not allow it to happen was the Tuna when he was in charge of the show on the field. An even then, he had a few games where we sucked and should not have. Yet, Parcells made everyone suffer after games like this and that's why they were far and between on his watch. As much as I hate to agree, even if we miss the playoffs this season and we collaspe the rest of the way Mangini should be given next year and the following year to show us he belongs in the job he has. NFL teams and owners are all to quick to pull the trigger and fire a head coach and his staff. As much as you or I may not like it, it takes years to build a strong football team. In that I mean, one that is built to stay on or near the top of the game for many years to come. See the Steelers, Colts, Pats, Cowboys, etc and this can only be done if you give a staff time to set there feet. While many here may not agree with me, I think a huge mistake along these lines the Jets made was Pete Carroll and getting rid of him after one year. It is my honest beleif that had we given Pete a few more years he would still be coaching this team today. The man had an excellent football mind, was and is an excellent basic coach, maybe a little lax his first year, but he would have learn to be hard when he had to. All one has to do is look at his body of work since taking over out in Cali. The man has turned that program around and made it a powerhouse. He runs a good show and no doubt has an excellent eye for talent. Now one could argue that the pro's and college are oranges and apples, yet again, I believe Pete could have done just as well on this level if given a chance. So in that vain, I think it behoves the Jets and there Fans to let this all play out before we start calling for a HC's coaches head. Now that's not to saying we cannot correct the mistakes of the wrong guys running the defense or not improving the offense If you look at past history the Jets have not had a HC who really has been given the time needed to get it right. Herm, well he was given time, yet his eye was on the KC job and more money for his last two years with the Jets. Also we see how that is all working out in KC, so we know now that he was in over his head. Then Groh who was thrown into the Job and was never really comfortable with it, and his sudden departure to the college ranks, again not time to build. Of course the Parcells years and the program to right the sinking ship, but never to really to build it for the long term. An is this not the reason we brought in Mangini, to have a HC who would not be looking to bolt for greener pastures or crying for more money without producing. So no matter how painful things seem right now, we must all remember we were a 4-12 team last year and are now 9-5 with two let to play. As much as we will hate missing the playoffs, we are already have a winning season in the books. So open your eyes and realize that Mangini is doing just what was asked of him and is right on track for a third year HC to bring the Jets to respectability and keep the program headed in the right direction. The next two years is when we should see all the hard work pay off. Will we get to the Super Bowl, this I don't know, but at that point we should be able win these games we are so prone to lose now. If that happens then the rest of the story will take care of itself and we should be in posistion to make history again after 45 years of waiting. JMHO ....
Calling run on first down and pass on second down is weird? Has this board forgotten about how teams play football in the name of complaining about unsuccessful plays? And another question that I *know* people will go around: If we're such a talented team, and I've been saying we are from Day 1...why can't we just run and then pass it? If the team is as talented as some are suggesting here...so talented that only a retard can fuck it up...why are we getting stopped? Isn't the staple of a great team to punch it in despite the odds being against them? And this is all why not only is complaining amazingly boring, but it's simple and short sighted as hell. MAYBE one factor of MANY on a football field is considered here, and thats just not good analysis. Thats the same kind of analysis many here laugh at when someone on ESPN says it. BTW: Our lack of offense game planning...in your opinion...got us two TDs in our first two possessions on Sunday. I know I know...doesn't matter...the game was still too close to be well coached...that Giants coaching staff though...what BEASTS calling the "Eli escapes everyone on a sack to nail Tyree in the helmet for a first" in the Super Bowl. THATS fire folks. THATS gameplanning.
If the Jets miss the playoffs Mangini is gone. There isn't a snowball's chance in hell he isn't. There is no way Johnson can afford to keep him and even hope to sell one more PSL. It would send the absolute wrong message to the fan base. It would say he could care less. Anybody who thins differently is a fool. Maybe if we didn't start 8-3 and then lose to two scumbag teams it would be different. That is not the case. He will also have to overpay Cowher to right the ship....unless he can get Parcells to come back.
I agree that there is NO excuse for this team not making the playoffs. In fact, I think it would be a direct indictment of Mangini if they somehow manage not to (I think this would put him on notice and he would have to show serious progress by the end of next year). However, as I indicated in my original post, I think that patience is required when looking for a successful head coach and there are plenty of examples throughout NFL history to support my premise. How many times have we seen a young head coach fired by an impatient owner in his first few years as a head coach only to get another shot a few years down the road and turn out to be a good, in not GREAT, coach???? I briefly mentioned the example of Belichick (already widely considered one of the greatest coaches in the history of the sport - he was fired from his first NFL head coaching job for going 5-11 with a team favored to win the division that went 2-7 in it's final 9 games). If the Jets missed the playoffs at 10-6, let's say, they would still have a winning record and would have as good a record as the franchise has posted in a decade). But there are many others. (Mike Shannahan is another classic example - and that was done when Al Davis was still respected as being a football 'genius') My argument is basded on a keen historical awareness and a firm belief that patience is a virtue.
Mangini will get his extension at season's end no matter what happens. Woody and Tanny won't change anything before the new ballpark opens. All Mangini has to do is keep this team competitive and its all good. Now if this team tanks, and by that I mean another 4-12 stinker or somehow he loses control of the team, then I see a change. Other than that? Mangini will be here for years to come so get used to the Fatman. Who knows, at some point before 2048 we just might be in another SB.. If not, there's always 2088. If you think this timeline is extreme, ask a Cub fan...
Been a fan since '68 when my dad took me to see a Jets / Bills game in the old "Rockpile" War Memorial Stadium in downtown Buffalo ... Never once wavered on supporting them, may not have agreed with the things that have gone on over the years ... But I bleed JETS green, NO MATTER WHAT and live or die week to week with how they play .... Seems I've done a lot more dying than living LOL
Mangini isn't getting fired in either situation... and Parcells or Cowher are NEVER coming to NY (again).
Every week we say his referendum is this Sunday... If we say it today, we'll damn sure say it for the Miami game, which is a MUST win in every sense of the word
If the NFL would allow it, this could totally be a reality show. Every week Mangini must win convincingly, or he'll be fired. Only thing is that even on something as dumb as a reality show all that matters is results. Now that Mangini is getting results, he's obligated to get style points to please the fanbase. I could imagine Jets fans if we hired a younger Bill Walsh and he replicated his first 2 years in SF..."this idiot is trying new things and they OBVIOUSLY don't work. Not only that, but he's too arrogant to admit, and just keeps doing it. Plus, he doesn't show EMOTION and FIRE on the sideline. Get him out of here." Hopefully the team keeps chugging along and picks up some steam again. They really have no choice anyway.
^ He hasn't gotten results the last three weeks. If we keep 'chugging along' at this pace, we're going to miss the playoffs... We won Sunday, and I'm thrilled we did, but didn't step onto the field and win that game. The Bills lost it, and I don't think anybody can deny that... If you think that victory was the result of good coaching/football, you're just insane.
If we managed to squeak out of Seattle with a win, so what? It's a win. All that matters is that we find a way to win the next two games and jump into the playoffs as division champions. Once that happens we can start judging Mangini's competance as a coach.
