the way our defense is playing...we're gonna get KILLED in the playoffs....and that's not being a darksider...that's "cold reality".
I actually knew eactly what he was doing, that was the one play call on that series that I like what Sutton was doing. He took two LB rushers (thomas and I believe devito) out to stop Lee Evans from getting a free release. I liked the move, then both guys came on a kamikaze blitz at the right tackle, and had Losman held the ball another half second he was eating turf.
did you watch more than the last 2 minutes of the game??...because your flagrent "idiocy" says otherwise, dumbass.
Please don't even attempt. I have already tried. Giving up 27 points to a team that has scored SIX points in the last two games combined. AT HOME. Yes, the defense won you the game. Have you ever thought maybe the defense was a big reason we were behind in the first place? So in the end Dick Jauron helped them make up for it. Your playing JP Losman let me remind you too. This defense has a horrible day and Dick Jauron bailed them out. It does not mean this defense is "done" though IMO. They have showed they can play (i.e. Titans). IMO if you put 24 points at home against a team that has scored SIX points in the last two games QB's by JP Losman is enough to win you the game and you didn't need the defense to "win" you the game.
The defense stinks but is this the game to complain about them? They won them the game at the end. The offense in the second half was the unit that didn't get it done.
Yeah, they didnt look very good along the way, but they did create 4 TOs, right? Three picks and ellis' fumble recovery TD? Oh, and BTW, It's Eight O'Clock, Under God. LOL
I disagree, some coaches consistently get good tackling and intense effort out of the players and some coaches don't. Just look at Singletary this year or Buddy Ryan in years past.
Thats an extreme. Singletary has coached all of 3 games and I'm sure Buddy Ryan teams had bad days. Most wouldn't consider a W a bad day, but this is the 21st century and we like to complain.
I watched a few of those plays over and over again (tivo). To me, it looked like too many Jets rushed in to try to get to Lynch and clogged it up. Essentially, the defense inadvertently stood him up - Tacklers all around him pushing him from North, South, East, and West. Had a couple of guys just dropped back, the first guy on him probably would have taken him down. If the would get off their blocks quicker, it wouldn't be a problem. Hopefully Mangi gets that fixed this week - keyword hopefully.
My take is this: We spent too much time trying to strip the ball instead of making tackles. That's where we were trying too hard. As a whole on defense, we are built "differently". We are built to play with a lead not neck to neck. In our biggest wins [NE, TEN, and AZ], we had a substantial lead, and were able to look impressive UNTIL things got tight and we start calling coverage defenses. The odds are [even though i don't agree] that the opposing QB will make a mistake trying to read the defense ALL THE WAY DOWN the field. This theory is only validated if the blitz [read it all night Sutton] is established. Operating with the 3-4 defense is supposed to be about zone blitzing and overload blitzing. Where we seem to fall short, is that our OLB's should really be on the line of scrimmage [simulating a 5-2 look]. We can still operate as a 3-4, but our OLB's are not very good in space and need to be closer to the line of scrimmage if not on the line of scrimmage. Our secondary is suspect because Rhodes has to play more coverage this year to "help out" Ty Law. We've done a good job not giving up the BIG pass play [deep ball] this year, but we are truly limited with our options. Our defense does take A LOT of things away from our opponents, but we really need Sutton to figure out a way to get pressure. Let's bring those OLB's on the line of scrimmage and let the opposing offense try to figure out if it's a 5 man rush, or 4, or 3.
In the 3-4 defense, one LB is supposed to blitz on every play. You disguise that LB so the offense does not know who it is. Sending a LB is not a blitz, just a normal 4 man rush. Sending two LBs or one LB and a CB is a blitz and I haven't seen that happen too often. Other teams probably blitz about one fifth of the plays...just a guess. But we probably blitz (5+ man rush) one tenth of the time.
I think there is more than one way to run the 3-4, but I agree that the standard NFL 3-4 is really a 3.5-3.5. You have oversized OLBs one of which operates as a DE on most plays, so its a 4-3 to the offense only they don't know which side is going to be overloaded. This system requires both OLB to be pass rushing threats which is why the play of BT is so disastrous. But I think the original idea behind the 3-4 was stopping the run. There are four run gaps tackle to tackle, so it takes 4 one gapping DLinemen to cover them all. But 3 two gapping linemen can also cover all four run gaps between the tackles. So now you have the run gaps covered and one extra man left over.
