I'm beginning to ponder this: If the Jets drafts you in the first round, is that the kiss of death for your future career????
What would be the advantage to either party in such a scenario? Whatever amount the Saints would secretely agree to in this scenario could always be offered to Vilma openly after he is a FA.
Keller is doing great, as is Revis, Mangold, and Brick. 4 out of 5 is great in terms of immediate rookie impact on a team. They are all Gems.
How did Tannenbaum agree to that. He should have made it if the Saints brought him back for the 2009 season, not resigned him during the season. What if they resign him in the offseason before free agency begins? I know according to Adam Schefter it is too late for us to get the 2nd round pick, but they can still resign him before free agency begins...
Keller and Revis are gems. Mangold and Brick (especially Brick) are VASTLY overrated by Jet fans. There is a reason our team's best performances have come in games when the gameplan has revolved around pass plays where the ball is out of the QB's hand within 2.5 seconds of the snap. We do not have one OL who is above average in pass protection. Brick is probably the best in that respect, but he's such a push over run blocking, that it kind of evens out... Mangold misses way more blocks than many Jet fans care to recognize, and seems to make poor reads quite often, resulting in defenders coming free. I know he had a very good rookie year, but he has been average since then...
No im not he was the better candidate its more of a joke than anything, dont take things so seriously.
The point of the thread is this effects what draft pick the Jets receive for Vilma, that's the point of the thread. If he signed with NO before season end they receive a higher pick.
I don't think that's exactly it. As I posted earlier, and Schefter appears to be saying, the language of the contract seems to say "Contract Extension". This means that he cannot be allowed to become a free agent, otherwise no escalation to a 2nd rounder. However the 85% clause seems a lock to occur, therefore it goes up to a 3rd regardless.
After I wrote that I tried to find some details and came up with the Schefter report. I think he is wrong, it makes no sense that there would be a stipulation that he has to sign before the season ends, it wouldn't be the first time an "expert" was wrong about the conditions of a trade. If not, I stand corrected.
He was going to be a FA at the end of this year in any case, so the asking price couldn't be too high. Remember we paid the equivalent of a 3rd or 4th rounder for T. Jones, and we still wouldn't do it without signing him to a long term extension. We got a way better deal for Vilma in that we got the 3rd or 4th without the assurance that the Saints would have him for more than a year. If they REALLY want to keep him, we get even more. I have a feeling, in the absence of the Shockey trade (which has been shite for them), they would have re-signed him before hitting FA. The sticking point appears to be the loss of a first, which is understandable. Now if Tanny is really as magic as they say, maybe he can work out a 2nd and something for 2010, so that the Saints can re-sign him prior to FA. Though we could really use the picks this year, especially in light of the Fruve trade.
Not "before the season ends". Just before he actually hits the open market and becomes a FA, which is at the end of Feb. I believe. That seems to be the case from all reports, but you are right, nobody really knows for sure. edit: I have been looking for the thread with the D-rob and Vilma updates from about a month ago. Someone had a really good link in there with the best explanation of the trade I've heard. Wish I could find it...
