This sort of popped into my head, I hope its not too trivial for its own thread. My question is, after dumping Deangelo Hall will the Raiders ever be able to sign another big name free agent? Won't the players be afraid of signing a big money contract and then getting dumped like Hall did? Given Davis' lack of drafting expertise free agency is even more important if the Raiders are ever going to be a respectable team again. By dropping Hall the Raiders just might have destroyed their future and guaranteed that the team will sink down to a level of uncompetitiveness never before seen in the NFL.
Thing is most of these FAs are extremely overpriced at the tag the Raiders sign them. I mean who else was going to sign DeAngelo for the amount the Raiders did? Except maybe Jerry Jones, and even he's not biting on that contract. Elite FAs tho will of course avoid them at all costs. I know I would.
I wish Al Davis' sweatpants would fall down in public so he could get arrested for indecent exposure. At least that would get him out of the way for a little while.
They will sign. Get their bonus and know they will be a free agent in less than a year, so they can collect another healthy signing bonus.
I agree. Things could not have worked out beter for Hall - he has $8 million in his pocket, and is now free to sign with anyone who will have him (if he can't find a good team to sign him that is just a reflection on his ability). While the very best free agents, who can get their price anywhere, won't go to Oakland, that has nothing specifically to do with Hall, but just that the team is a joke. And jeto, my reaction is exactly the opposite of yours - I hope that Al Davis lives forever and never gets in the slightest trouble, since that would pretty much guarantee that the Raiders will continue to be the most dysfunctional franchise in professional sports.
As much as I hate to say it because of the problems they've caused us in the past, I'd love to see the Raiders return to being the dumping ground for the outcasts, misfits and outlaws in the league. A cast of wild characters who somehow put aside their personal dramas and came together as a vicious force on Sundays. As much as I used to hate them, I always feared them on game day.
I think the whole outcasts, misfits and outlaws thing was really just the influence of John Madden. The Raiders were the original all-Madden team. Madden gave them the cool image and Ron Wolf gave them the talented roster. Davis will never recapture that. People younger than a certain age will never understand how friggin' cool the Raiders used to be.
unless u are a dumbass no worthy high priced fa will ever go to oakland until al davis is dead (unfortunately)
Let's see I could have my job, or someone will pay me considerably more. I know people hate to lose in competition, but getting paid more always helps. It's not like Al isn't paying people to play on his team.
