One of the good things about having an NFL gameday season ticket is you can look over previous weeks games which are archived. I have been looking at our offensive pass strategy over the last few weeks and we are struggling big time. Really, the Bills game hinged on a few plays and certainly Elam's pick but we had enough red zone visits to have put this game away a lot quicker. The Bills pass coverage was outstanding and Favre just didn't have options available. This has been a reccurring theme during our games with the exception of the Cardinals game where we seemed to just air it out. I don't want to get into a Schotty bashing exersice on the back of a great win but someone smarter than me at this game tell me why we seem to have no outs available when we are in a pass scoring position. Now, one theory maybe is that Favre gets extra attention from D coordinators but Brett is just plain lost sometimes which contributes to his pushing for that tough pass in double coverage. Our ground attack is starting to click into gear, Play action is available, Favre has the tools to make any pass and Brian Shott plus Bill Callaghan are top coaches what am I missing?
You are missing the fact that we lack a cohesive game plan. We are still using Brad Smith as a RB and on end arounds. That should tell you all you need to know. The rest of our offensive game plan goes downhill from there.
This team has no offensive identity. One would think with the money we have invested in our O-line, we would be a running team. This would open up the passing game, but the Jets seem to change their offensive strategy from game to game. This can not be good for offensive chemistry. The way they use Brad Smith tells me that the WR experiment is over. He has too much athletic ability to be relegated to a end around trick play person. Whenever he is on the field (except special teams) the one thing you know the Jets are not going to do is just line up and play basic ball. Hell the team doesn't even set up its trick plays. The lack of offensive continuity is scary.
What's wrong with the end around? We seem to always pick up at least 5 yards with it and it forces defenses to be honest in there pursuit.
If everyone sees it coming, why are we so successful with it? He's in the game as a regular receiver more often than in years past. They don't see it coming or you wouldn't see the defense overpersue the opposite way of the reverse almost every time. Even if they did, who cares if we're picking up good yardage almost every time we do it?
Isn't it better not to have an offensive identity? That way, opposing teams won't hone in one one aspect of our offense. Regardless, I agree that we are having red zone struggles. The problem, I'm afraid, rests with Favre. He takes way too long to get the ball off and is not finding the open man. Granted, part of the problem is that guys are not always getting open. But I think Favre is generally the main problem there. Hopefully, learning the playbook more or developing new plays to work around this problem will help.
on the first redzone favre looked right bout coles was wide open on the left in the back of the end zone....we had chances just didn't connect.
We are 4th in the League in TDs (25) and 13th in FG Attempts (17). Sure, last Sunday we had some trouble, but in general, we?re pretty good in the Redzone.
Favre was actually chased out of the pocket when Coles got open past the safety. He didn't have an open read on Coles.
We've been struggling bad the last couple of games scoring in the red zone and having to settle for FG's which we can barely make... We gotta step it up in the RZ.
Great point. Making the Defense stay honest in pursuit with the threat of a reverse is a good benefit, add to that they seem to be working and I see not reason not to run them.
You are missing the most important point, ie, points scored!!!! We're first in the AFC East and 2nd in the entire AFC!!! When is the last time we can say that! Obviously, we're not hitting on all cylinders yet, due to the fact that we have a lot of new players that need to mesh together. Even given that we've scored a lot of points! Imagine when we do put it all together!
We need to use the TEs more in the redzone. He's injured now, but Bubba used to be a big threat in the redzone. I think defenses overlook blocking tight ends and they are more likely to sneak into open space. Keller isn't fooling anyone. Having a tackle in the TE spot isn't helping either unless we actually try to sneak a pass into him.
