As for the list, I think it is a combination of winning and a coach they think they could relate to which would include 1) race and 2) having played in the NFL. We all the new the Jets took a chance on Mangini perhaps a year or two before they should have and most were fine with it. Therefore, it is not surprising that there is a perception among players that a 30-something, non-football playing white dude rode Belichick's coattails to a head coaching job. Until Mangini wins consistently why would anyone want to play for him?
This cam out a while ago actually. For those who are interested, here's more elaboration from the New York Times, including differences by race and an explanation of why Belicheck is on both lists (which is actually kind of obvious, IMO).
Mangini: The FatAss no one wants to play for I have an idea about this, but most message posters on this board reject it because "They never played the game." I never played the game either, but here's a clue from someone who has worked in other demanding fields. Look at those lists. How many coaches on the lists played in the NFL, and how many coaches named never did? I've made this point before and Mangini lovers refuse/hate to hear it. But listen up. I have to think that if you are an NFL veteran, and some fatass who never got better than nose tackle for Wesleyan University is giving me a hard time about how I am doing my drills in the middle of training camp in August? I'd be like "F. U., dude!" Hello!?! Players want to play for guys who actually played in the NFL! They don't want to play for some brainiac coach who just happened to be on some other successful coach's staff!
Huh? Some of the greatest, most innovative coaches in NFL history didn't take one snap in the NFL. What kinda ignorant shit is that...braniac coach? Teams want to shy away from guys who think cause it gets in front of the "football mentality?" I never take these polls seriously. Mostly cause of the many polls so obviously retarded...like the Eric Smith as #4 dirtiest player thing. This one is only being taken seriously because it helps people feel vindicated about the terrible terribleness of our coach.
just an observation....4 out of the 5 coaches wanted to play for are black...the only one that isnt won plenty of superbowls...im just saying that its possible many players voted for those coaches to prove a point? or maybe im just totally wrong...i just find that strange...
We discussed this in December 2007. http://forums.theganggreen.com/showthread.php?t=28226 http://forums.theganggreen.com/showpost.php?p=732011&postcount=78 Eight ex-NFL/AFL players went on to win a Super Bowl as a head coach- Tony Dungy Bill Cowher Mike Ditka Tom Flores Chuck Noll Tom Landry Don Shula Don McCafferty These head coaches combined to win 14 Super Bowls. The other 28 Super Bowls were won by head coaches who never played in the NFL (or AFL).
The real Bosko comes out again.... you should do some research. Look up Bill Walsh and his coaching tree. Unless this was sarcasm that I did not detect, but I don't think you were going there.
The only good thing about that list is there are some Iconic coaches on that list. So if he played in the NFL, there is a good chance for multiple SBs or one ring and a sustained dominance in the respective division.
If that is the only good thing that what are the bad things about that list? They average almost two SB wins each.
offensive starters: BP 4 AG 2 TB 5 Defensive starters: BP 1 AG 2 TB 8 The totals: BP: 5 AG 4 TB 13 Where do you get your info from? and the # goes down on Groh if you count postseason rosters b/c Abe was hurt as usual.
I used the 2004 roster... Groh guys I count as BP guys. I also counted guys they got in FA/trades and so on.
We landed some serious talent in the off-season with Mangini as the HC. He can't have too bad a reputation.
