I know earlier in his career he played SS while Erik Coleman held down the FS spot, but the depth chart on nyjets.com says that Rhodes is the FS now... so....what is he? or, if he can play both position well, which one is he better at?
No i think he's free now. I think eric smith is the ss now because eric smith can't play fs because he sucks.
Ok but if Eric Smith's ineptitude did not influence what position Rhodes played, which Safety position is he a better fit at?
I do not mean what is he playing right now - I should have made this clear - what position is he best at. Someone told me he is a great tackler and good playing in the box so that would lead me to believe that he would make a great SS..
I think he is great at both positions - Rookie season stats as a SS: 105 total tackles (85 solo), 1 sack, 5 PBU, 1 INT. 2nd year as a SS: 98 total tackles (75 solo), 5 sacks, 9 PBU, 4 INT. 3rd year as a SS: 67 total tackles (51 solo), 2 sacks, 10 PBU, 5 INT. 1st year as a FS through 7 games: 41 total tackles (33 solo), 1 sack, 1 PBU, 0 INT. He is on pace for: 82 total tackles (66 solo), 2 sacks, 2 PBU, 0 INTs. For some reason I think he is better used as a SS for the Jets...
look at his stats...i'll re-post them: Rookie season stats as a SS: 105 total tackles (85 solo), 1 sack, 5 PBU, 1 INT.
I'm going to agree with the left/right safety thing. The difference between the two safety spots is dying anyway, and all I really care to think about it as is that Rhodes is a "good" safety. I'd like another one of those.
Again, there is no FS or SS in the Jets sceme. There?s only a right Safety and a left Safety. Rhodes is playing left Safety. Even thou there is no FS or SS, the left Safety spot, which Rhodes plays, would be closer to the SS spot. Most QBs are righthanded and because of that, they like their TE better on the right side. So usually, TEs line up more on the right side then the left side. So the left Safety faces the TE more often than the right Safety, which gives him more the duties of a SS than a FS.
Rhodes was never strictly a SS in his 1st 3 years. Only reason he was playing some SS is because Eric Coleman couldn't play SS. He played FS in college, and we drafted him to be a FS. Nonetheless, he lines more at the FS position than SS now, and that's what he did for the 1st 3 years. I think of SS to be a hard hitter type. Rhodes is more of a ball hawk. This question is also similar to something like, "is Merriman/Ware a ROLB or LOLB?" They can play both position equally well, but you want them to be coming from the QB's blind side, thus lining them up as the ROLB. Since Rhodes has the ability to roam around the secondary and help out the CB's, he should be playing more FS than SS.
You started out perfectly fine and were making sense but then you contradicted yourself pretty badly. There is no difference between a ROLB and a LOLB in a 3-4 defense except for what side of the field they line up on. A SS, as you were trying to say, needs to be a good tackler in the box and must be able to take on blockers/linemen/RBs and deliver a blow as well as cover well. The FS is the ballhawk that roams the secondary. The whole point of this poll was to try and find out which Rhodes was better at + if he would be a good SS, and to give people on these boards some voice so they could give their opinion. I have found however that there are some douche baggy types on these boards that take that opportunity and be, well, douche bags with it. I hope they feel cool though online, seeing as they must need to come here and vent since they must get shafted in the real world on a daily basis. Back on topic - I think it has been established that Rhodes is a FS type that is best used as a ballhawk patrolling the secondary and that the Jets need to acquire either in FA or through the draft a SS that can do the same and play well in the box.
There is a differnece between a LOLB and a ROLB. The LOLB is asked to do more Runstopping and the LOLB is asked to be the team?s primere passrusher.
