I'm actually kind of surprised you guys feel this way about Chad P. Chad's got skills and he's been nothing but professional since he's been on our team. He dosen't have the strongest arm but the man makes smart accurate throws when we need them. I'm actually starting to know why he beat us as many times as he did when he was with you guys. The whole situation worked out for both teams.
Bingo. Because Favre has such a strong arm, fans tend to assume he's throwing it deep all the time. He's not. He's throwing it shorter more than is normal for him this year, but not much more. Re Pennington, it's easy to remember his 40+ plays because they came in just two games, against the Texans and the Bills. There were two screens (to Cobbs and Williams), the flea-flicker to Cobbs (slightly underthrown, but Cobbs was wide, wide open), the 46-yarder to Ginn (underthrown) and the 64-yarder to Ginn (the pass was just 18 yards past the LOS, but it was a perfect throw hitting Ginn in stride, so Pennington certainly contributed to the long gain). The 20+ yard passes are more impressive -- Pennington has shown touch and accuracy on 12-25 yard throws Miami fans just aren't used to seeing. Pennington is obviously playing better than he did last year, but I didn't see him enough last year to say why. I suspect it has more to do with health than with schemes or playcalling. He's probably also helped by low expectations in Miami -- if we are trailing or in a tight game, the coaches won't dial up 50 pass attempts. A Jets fan suggested that the real problem with Pennington's arm is that it begins to give out after 35 attempts in a game. He's only gone over that total once, I think, when we lost to you in game #1. That's part of the reason I hate articles like this -- it's not fair to compare QBs for different teams asked to do different things head to head. Even though it's inevitable in this case. Statistically, Pennington's having his best year since 2002 -- you could even say he's better this year than in 2002. Can he keep that up? Can he avoid getting hurt? Hard to blame the Jets' FO for deciding not to bet that he can. But he sure has been a nice pickup for the Fins.
I'm kinda surprised the Jets outright released him. Not sure if the Vikings would have taken him but that would have been the place to trade him. He might end up doing to the Jets what the Packers avoided Brett doing to them if he had been traded to the Vikings. Back to Favre and his passing.....GB receivers are great at YAC. That's been the biggest difference between Favre's numbers last year in comparison to this year. The better the WRs run their routes, the better chance they have at picking up more YAC. Pennington's style and his arms strength doesn't allow for as much YAC as Favre's does. The zip that Brett puts on the ball gets it there more quickly and gives WRs a bit more time to make a move and get some extra yardage and maybe a TD.
I am sure you're right. But I have to say, despite passes like the wounded duck 46-yarder to Ginn yesterday, Pennington has done a good job helping the receivers get YAC this year by putting it right on their numbers -- the 64-yarder to Ginn is a case in point.
That's it. If you can catch it in stride and keep going you can get a lot more YAC then if you have to stop or jump for the ball. Accuracy is huge. Jerry Rice had a lot of YAC partly because he was amazing and partly because Joe Montana put the ball right on the spot on the dead run.
I could not care less about stat comparisons at this point. The only stat that matters to me is in the Win/Loss column.
And the Fish have Pennington fit him in with a rebuilding plan. We got Farve for what exactly? To put us over the top, to be a .500 team?
I never wanted to get rid of Chad, anyone without a life search all my posts. I was and still am the biggest Chad homer/supporter out there. I really hope one day Chad is our head coach. I still to this day cannot believe how many people on this board wanted Clemens to take over. I was adamant against that occurring and to me looking at the success Chad is having with a team that literally has one weapon Ronnie Brown (name one of their WR's I dare you) that IS FACTUAL evidence that the minority on this board was absolutely unequivocally right in their support for Chad before Favre came here that he was the man for this job. And that statement was not just for 2009, Chad has a good 3-5 solid years left in him, maybe longer. He simply wins even on bad teams to make them respectable like the 08 miami campaign.
Chad has always been a very good quarterback and now that he's free from Mr Doughboy and under Parcell's team he can cut it loose. Mangini will be out by the end of the year. His first year he imitated BB and now he can't figure anything new. He's done. Great #6 draft pick fatso. The invisible man Mr Vernon Gholston and maybe too dumb to learn a pro scheme. Did anyone notice how the Long protege played against the Pats yesterday. Damn good. While VG warms the pines.
Funny, Chad didn't throw any INTs in week one and he still had to come back in the 4th quarter. Try another argument.
If you're basing your roster and strategy on coming back in the 4th quarter you're going to lose more games than you win, one game notwithstanding.
I'm shocked nobody has pointed this out yet but did anyone notice that Favre has over twice as many touchdown passes as Chad does????
Also, who on this board wants Pennington instead of Favre down by 6 with two mintues to go and the ball on our own 20??
Penny clearly has better numbers than Favre, but he wouldn't have those numbers with the Jets and Favre would have even better numbers with the Fins. The Fins are competently coached now and that is important for any player, they also have a strong running game and that is very important to Penny, more than most QBs. On this team Penny would not be putting up the same numbers. And on Miami Favre would have better numbers and opposing teams would be having nightmares about having to choose between stopping the R&R Express or the Favre Train.
