http://myespn.go.com/blogs/afceast/0-4-191/Take-your-pick--Pennington-or-Favre-.html the shocking stat is the number of 20+ and 40+ passes for Chad.
the numbers can be a bit deceiving, chad has not gone down field as much as those numbers make it seem. many of those big plays have been screens that are busted for big gains by the backs. yesterday chad had at least one pass that he threw about 3 yards go for a 60 yard completion to ricky williams. im not taking anything away from chad, he is having a good year. but if this thread is to say that chad is throwing downfield more than favre than it simply isn't the case. lol typing his name brings up that sign? thats great whoever made it so that happens is the man.
Chad is in fact throwing downfield quite a bit this year. I don't wanna hear any BS about 3 yard passes going for 60 yards. I know there have been a couple of those for him, but in the games I have watched I have seen him throwing further down the field than I ever remember him doing before. The truth is, our play calling is what likely limited him and is handcuffing Favre to some extent. I'd still take Favre over Penny... whether the numbers lie or not. Only Favre can throw 3 INT's (one for a score) and still somehow manage to end up on top at the end.
Miami went deep on their first play for a completion. Chad is healthy and when that's the case he's a very good QB in the NFL. Far from "finished", and can certainly throw it more than "5 yards". Did us another favor yesterday, too.
Well its funny how things worked out. After reading this thread I checked the QB stats out in depth. ANd I was shocked. Chad is 2nd in the league in yards per completion. Second! He has the 4th highest QB rating compaired to Farve at 15th. Turns out Chad is top 5 in every QB stat. Except most INT's - the only place Farve is top 5. In fact he is first in that catagory. Basically Chad is up there with Tony Romo as the top QB in the league ATM. Go figure
Chad's doing a good job this year. Its becoming embarrassing that not only is Chad more efficient than Brett this season, but inexperienced QBs (JeMarcus Russell & Tyler Thigpen) are outplaying Favre in their match ups.
But let's look at the Favre vs Chad numbers...what is the constant in the equation? It's the shitty offensive play book. Not sure where this thing came from, but it completely handcuffs any and all quarterbacks that come to our team. Funny how Brett was airing it out left and right with the Packers, comes to the Jets and starts throwing for 6yds per pass. Chad was (or we thought he was) terrible, washed up, and weak. He gets a new play book in his hands, and he is putting up better numbers than the guy who took his spot. This isn't that hard to figure out...I'd rather Schott start copying plays from Madden 09.
Actually, Favre's career is mostly about timing patterns and short to midrange passes. He aired it out a bit more last year because Jennings developed into a big play receiver. I've got no problems with shorter pass plays but the WRs need to execute a bit better. One of Favre's favorite plays is the slant and that ended in a pick 6 yesterday because Stuckey stopped running his route. Another thing to think about is that downfield pass plays require another second or so of pass protection. Favre is getting pounded a lot as it is. If they start throwing more deep balls I suspect he will get knocked out of the game. I'm just not trusting the Jets' pass protection that much at this time.
That is the one category that Favre owns that matters, and wins. We're ahead of the Fins as well at this point. But with the backfield that Miami has it makes sense that Penny hasn't had to throw a lot of red zone TDs.
and more than 300% more INTs. Chad is having a MUCH better season and not only are we worse off for the trdae SO FAR but it helped MImai get better very quickly. Miami would have 1-2 wins w/o Chad, we'd have 5-6 wins w/ Chad but instead we have 4 wins and they have 3.
for anyone who was thinking i was bashing chad and saying he only throws the little screens i did not mean that. he has gone downfield some this year i have seen a few dolphins games. but they also have some very big plays on screen passes. a few games ago chad threw 2 tds to cobbs. one was off the wildcat formation and chad threw the ball downfield to him wide open, thats great it was a downfield pass. the next td to cobbs was a screen that ended up going something like 80 yards. yesterday chad did in fact get a 60 yard completion on a screen pass that traveled no more than 3 yards in the air. thats fine if it works it works. but i was just saying its not like favre is all of a sudden not going down the field and chad is now slinging it all over the field. chad is still doing what he does, and that is being very efficent. i think his stats are increased this year as opposed to the last few years here because he has managed to not get banged up at all so far. thats huge for chad he needs everything to be healthy in order to succeed because he cant get by on his arm alone. the ankle injury last year was huge for him because of that. also the dolphins are running the ball better than the jets have since chad had curtis in the backfield. chad is great with the play action and and great at finding the open man, when he the defense isnt able to dare him to beat them with his arm he can still be one of the better qbs in the league.
Is anyone else just starting to think from these numbers that maybe Shott just didn't give Chad a chance to succeed with conservative play calling?
Schotty is not a good offensive coordinator. He hasn't given me a single reason to believe that he is. With zero NFL experience I am confident that I could do a better job calling plays on game day.
I wouldn't think so. The first year Schott and Chad were both here we won 10 games with no real running attack and two rookies on the OL. Last year we couldn't run or block and both QBs struggled, but I don't know that it was the coaching. Plus Chad got banged up in the first game and never seemed to get back in a good groove.
I think this thread just proves many people thought it was short sighted to "go for it" with a 39 year old prima donna.
I loved CP. But i originally thought these comparisons between him and Brett Favre were laughable. However with each passing week i am slowly beginning to doubt myself. Maybe CP wasn't just a great guy, maybe he also was and still is a great QB. I still wish him the best of luck, and i hope Favre can figure out what he is doing wrong, and start playing some good football.
