He was 1 or two games over .500 when he left. He will prob be on the bench by seasons end. At some point the Henne era will start this year. You might as well get used to it.
We do have a weak schedule this year I have no illusions. We just have an upgrade at Qb this time around.
Something that hasn't happened, might not ever happen, but you say it will so I might as well get used to it? Ok.
You told me two months ago Chad would be the Starter of the Ny Jets this year get used to it? Please explain.
A Hall-of Fame QB fell into our lap and Chad was still a starting QB in our opener, just for the other team. Next question...
4 weeks before the season you don't bring in a recently retired HOF QB and cut your QB unless you have serious questions about whether your current QB can get the job done. It was a big risk.
I never said we didn't have serious questions, and truthfully I don't remember ever telling FOURTH that Chad was going to be our starter, I think he made that up. Although before the trade I figured he'd beat out Clemens, I just wanted the better guy to play. If you can get Brett Favre for a draft choice that isn't even a #1 and you can fit him in your cap, you do it. There are two different conversations going on at once here.
What was the deal again? Wasn't it a 1st if we went to the Super Bowl? I'd trade that for a first round pick. The trade had to be done, it was too good not to do, regardless of Chad. If the Jets were that unhappy with Chad they wouldn't have brought him into camp to compete for the #1 job. They had the whole off season to get rid of him if that was really the objective. Favre becoming available basically for free changed the plans. It probably worked out best for everyone involved, including Chad.
That record was mostly die to last year when he was hobbling and had little talent around him. he is the ONLY QB in team history to start playoff games in 3 different postseasons. They knew he could get the job done but Chad idn't durable. If he was he would still be here.
He was a starter on opening day, just not ours. You said he was finished. Sorry my crystal Brett Favre ball didn't arrive on time, I was still a lot closer than you were.
He was in a QB competition with Clemens who didn't do very well last year. He was probably there best option, but they clearly weren't happy with that option because they brought in a new QB 4 weeks prior to the season. You don't do that if you're happy with your options with the exception of durability concerns when they're both presently healthy. If durability were the only concern why would that be an issue when he's supposedly 100% as is the other guy he's in a competition with? Presumably there wasn't a huge gap in performance in there eyes or they would have named one of them the starter by that point. The truth is that neither of us knows for sure, but to me saying durability was the only issue doesn't make sense. As soon as a better option became available they went after it. There were no veteran upgrades available in the offseason in the FO's eyes. The guy had 4 weeks to learn the system and build chemistry with the players before the season started and they knew this. They took a big risk in making the move they did. You don't take a big risk like that unless you feel it is necessary and the potential reward is worth it. Italian Seafood - I was saying it's going to be a first round pick tongue in cheek. I say it whenever the pick is brought up in hopes that it does become a first.
Bingo. Which tells you where he stands in terms of QBs, he's better than most guys out there. We got very lucky that Favre unretired and Green Bay had the leverage to ship him out of the NFC. Chad got signed the next day and managed to win a starter's job himself in those same four weeks. The fact that it's a conditional pick based on Favre's performance made the deal even more of a no-brainer. Again, no reflection on Chad, if it takes Brett Favre coming here for basicaly free to replace you it isn't that bad.
But who else was available? Apparently no one better than John Beck was available either if you want to use that as your measuring stick. Absolutely it makes it a better deal - it takes away some of the concerns on both sides of the trade. That doesn't change the fact that it was a very risky thing to do at that point in time.
Who knew Brett Favre was available? They had an entire off season, including free agency, the draft and trades, to dump Chad if he was that bad. They went into camp with him after all the money they spent to upgrade the team, that's the point. He had most of camp and he played in the league 18 years, it wasn't that risky. If there is a such thing as a known quantity in the NFL it's Favre.
It had everything to do w/ durability. Chad played hurt last year too. If Chad wasn't an injury prone QB we'd have more than the 3 PO apps and probably would have went further and we'd think the deal he signed in '04 was a steal.
huh? I'm saying that an upgrade at QB wasn't available in the offseason until Favre became available. You then told me - that was an indicator of how good Penny is because there were no upgrades available. I then pointed out that the Dolphins still had John Beck as there starter at that point. One would assume that meant not much was available for veteran QB's in the off season if the fins couldn't upgrade over John Beck. Please - most people on here as well as analysts like Steve Young and Phil Simms were worried about him picking up the play book and having chemistry with the receivers. There was also and still is the risk of him just hanging it up any time he wants. There was plenty of risk involved in cutting a guy that was your starter last season in favor of someone who hadn't been involved in a football program since January. Just because he's Favre doesn't mean there wasn't risk. There was plenty.
