In the last 2 games, the Jets have had players with 3 TD performances (Coles, Thomas). I have two questions for you guys. 1) Prior to these games, who (and when) was the last Jet player to record a 3 TD game? 2) When was the last time we had back to back weeks with 3TD performances? I'm not talking about passing TD's, I'm talking about receiving and rushing TD's - special teams count too. I honestly have no idea, but if I had to guess I'd go with Curtis Martin for #1 somewhere between 2002 and 2004. For #2, I won't even guess.
That's an easy one for Cakes--if he views this thread. But I think your point is that something very special is going on and we can basically lay the reason for this at one mans doorstep. Please name him for me.
I had Cakes in mind when posting this. Junc may have the answers too. To answer your question, is the answer David Hasselhoff?
I believe santana Moss was the last to have 3 TDs in one game against the Giants in 2003. I have to think about back to back.
What would Brian Boitano do if he were here today? I'm sure he'd kick and ass or two, thats what Brian Boitano would do!
That sounds about right -- one of Pennington's first games back after hurting his wrist. Chad Morton had two KO returns in the 2002 opener, but I don't think he scored during the game itself to make it to three.
He didn't. I was at that Giants game with Chad's return in 2003. I know we came back late, I think we were 10 or 14 down and Becht caught either the tying TD or 2 point conversion. It's foggy now. Doug Brien's missed game winning FG is very clear though, a little preview of nightmares to come.
Thanks Junc. I do think it says a lot about this team that we had 2 3TD performers in the last 2 games when the last time anyone can point out a single one is 5 years ago. The defense and special teams have been putting us in good position and the offense has done a good job finishing the job and getting TD's instead of FG's. Can anyone answer question 2?
so the jets now have what.....2 of these 3 TD performances this year? Back to back games by Coles and now Jones. This is a good sign of things to come I think.
I'm not sure if it says anything at all. Individual stats in football are often misleading at best. You put up points as a team, as long as someone ends up scoring the TD, it doesn't matter who. I'll point out that 2003 was a shitty year and we lost that Giants game.
Those are good points. It seems as though we're getting a lot more opportunities to score points and taking advantage of them though. Sure Jones had all 3 of our TD's yesterday but when players consistently have the opportunity to score that many times I think you must be doing something right. Two games isn't enough to say it's consistent yet, but I'm hoping it's a sign of things to come. Obviously the most important stat is the "W". If this team can get to a point where all phases are clicking for 4 quarters they will be bad ass.
Jones should have had some of these games last year but we couldn't block and therefore run in the red zone. That put the heat on the QBs, which led them to suck and led to a lot of FGs. Once you can block and run for TDs, it opens up opportunities for the passing game to get theirs. Depending on circumstances and personnel on the opposing team, some days will lead to certain guys having big days like we've seen the past two weeks. We did have Curtis Martin for a long time, who got us close but wasn't a big short-yardage back, so different guys scored the TDs. It just depends on a lot of things.
In 1986 we had 3 different players score 3 TDs in agme and they did it w/in 6 weeks of each other but not in back to back games. Johnny hector, Wesley walker(did it twice) and Al Toon all had 3 TD performances in 1986. I'm not sure we have ever had back to back, I'd have to look that up but I'll leave that for cakes.
I was at the game whe Walker did it but I thought he had 4 that day.... If I remember correctly Johnny Hector had 2 TDs that day. I think he had the 1st two and it looked like it was gonna be a special day for him. I think Rocky Klever had the other TD for the Jets.
'86 was the year I started watching football and rooting for the Jets. I thought they were a pretty good team that year but can't remember it well enough to compare. Toon was the man.
In 1986 Walker had 4 against Miami in Week 3 Hector had 3 against the Pats in week 6 Al Toon had 3 against Nawlins in Week Toon and Walker each had 2 in consecutive games against Seattle and Atlanta in 9 and 10 Walker again had 3 in week 11 against Indy Walter Abercrombie of the Steelers had 3 against us in week 15 followed up by Cris Collinsworth of the Bengals and NBC in week 16 oh and Anthony Munoz had a TD reception in that game as well. The ironic thing about those games is we had a kickoff return by 2 different players Jojo Townsell against Pitt and Bobby Humphrey the opening kickoff in week 16. Walker finished with 12 TDs Toon and Hector with 8
