    Palmer not throwing

The first clue that this Friday might be different than last Friday came when Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer didn't emerge from the training room until almost all of his teammates were on the field for the beginning of practice.

Then instead of heading that way, he veered to what looked to be the weight room with rehab director Nick Cosgray, and he didn't appear on the field until after stretching and during the specialists set.

Palmer was dressed, but without his helmet and wasn't throwing. He had what looked to be ice wrapped around his bothersome throwing elbow while backup Ryan Fitzpatrick threw routes to the tight ends and wide receivers.

After missing the Cleveland game two weeks ago with what has been characterized as a sore elbow sustained the Sept. 21 Giants game and not throwing last Wednesday and Thursday, Palmer warmed up for the Cowboys on Friday by taking all the reps.

He had his best game of the season with first multi touchdown pass game, but said this past Wednesday he didn't feel comfortable at times throwing certain passes and that the elbow simply didn't feel like it did before Giants cornerback Cory Webster bent it back on a blitz as Palmer tried to throw.

Friday's early byplay seem to suggest that the Bengals could be turning to Fitzpatrick for the second time in three weeks.

Fitzpatrick had a rough day in the 20-12 loss to Cleveland at Paul Brown Stadium Sept. 28. He turned it over four times on three interceptions and had a fumble off a sack.

But he made that start on basically 48 hours notice because he didn't take reps in practice until Friday. Asked this past Friday if the last two weeks of throwing to Pro Bowl receivers Chad Ocho Cinco and T.J. Houshmandzadeh have out them on the same page, he said it can only help.

"They're easy to throw to," Fritzpatrick said. "I'm really comfortable throwing to all of them."

Since he came over in a trade just before the 2007 season, Fitzpatrick didn't throw to the starting wide receivers in anything beyond 1-on-1s until the Friday before the Cleveland game.

"I dislocated Slim's finger on his first day back last year (from suspension)," said Fitzpatrick of wide receiver Chris Henry. "I've worked with Antonio (Chatman) a lot. I never did stuff before in terms of seven-on-seven, or game-type situations (with the starters). Regardless if I play or not, it's good to work with the guys."

If he plays, he'll want his left tackle. But Levi Jones (knee) didn't dress. Dressed was left tacke Levi Jones (back). He didn't work Wednesday, either, and was limited Thursday.

Kicker Shayne Graham said he's counting on his sore groin being OK for Sunday. Graham, who doesn't kick Fridays, said he has been sore and decided to rest it Thursday but didn't expect there to be a problem big enough to put him on the shelf.

At this rate, I hope Palmer does play. He looked terrible against Dallas and the fact that he isn't practicing won't help matters for him.

Head coach Marvin Lewis said after practice Friday that backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick will start Sunday in New Jersey against the Jets in place of Carson Palmer as he continues to battle a throwing elbow injury.

Lewis indicated Palmer's injury is not a season-ending condition, but the club wants to try getting him some rest so it doesn't become a week-to-week situation. Lewis didn't rule out Palmer as a backup for Sunday and wouldn't say if he will be the No. 2 or No. 3 quarterback.

"We're trying to get it not a week-to-week thing," Lewis said. "We want to get the thing calmed down so it doesn't give him any irritation or problems at all."

The first clue that this Friday might be different than last Friday came when Palmer didn't emerge from the training room until almost all of his teammates were on the field for the beginning of practice.

    Palmer
Then instead of heading that way, he veered to what looked to be the weight room with rehab director Nick Cosgray, and he didn't appear on the field until after stretching and during the specialists set.

Palmer was dressed, but without his helmet and wasn't throwing. He had what looked to be ice wrapped around his bothersome throwing elbow while Fitzpatrick threw routes to the tight ends and wide receivers.

He had his best game of the season with his first multi-touchdown pass game, but said this past Wednesday he didn't feel comfortable at times throwing certain passes and that the elbow simply didn't feel like it did before Giants cornerback Cory Webster bent it back on a blitz as Palmer tried to throw.

Palmer's resting means the Bengals wil be turning to Fitzpatrick for the second time in three weeks.

Fitzpatrick had a rough day in the 20-12 loss to Cleveland at Paul Brown Stadium Sept. 28. He turned it over four times on three interceptions and had a fumble off a sack.

    Fitzpatrick
Since he came over in a trade just before the 2007 season, Fitzpatrick didn't throw to the starting wide receivers in anything beyond 1-on-1s until the Friday before the Cleveland game.

"I dislocated Slim's finger on his first day back last year (from suspension)," said Fitzpatrick of wide receiver Chris Henry. "I've worked with Antonio (Chatman) a lot. I never did stuff before in terms of seven-on-seven, or game-type situations (with the starters). Regardless if I play or not, it's good to work with the guys."

Fitzpatrick will want his left tackle. But Levi Jones didn't dress. He didn't work Wednesday, either, and was limited Thursday. Yet Lewis indicated he's be OK because sitting him Friday is part of the treatment for his knee.

Kicker Shayne Graham said he's counting on his sore groin being OK for Sunday. Graham, who doesn't kick Fridays, said he has been sore and decided to rest it Thursday but didn't expect there to be a problem big enough to put him on the shelf.

Lewis, however, said Friday the club is working out some kickers and might possibly add one to handle kickoff duties this Sunday. Lewis thinks Graham can kick field goals but maybe not kick off, which is why the Bengals may need to get some help in that area.

Lewis said defensive tackle John Thornton didn't work because he had a MRI on a lower leg but indicated he thinks he'll be OK. The hope is to activate third-rounder Pat Sims at the tackle spot for the first time, but the plan hit a snag when he hurt his thigh in Wednesday's practice.

But, "He moved better today than yesterday," and it sounds like he might be able to go.

This is great! I'm normally a pessimist, but I think the Jets have a field day on this clown. I see Rhodes first INT of the year this week...our offense, with Chatman back in short yardage and goal line, will ROLL!

Fitzpatrick played college ball at Harvard. If we somehow find a way to lose this game, the team should be sold.

As I posted about a week ago...

I just want us all to agree that...

    1) there is no way the Jets should lose this game, and

    2) if they should lose, no one is allowed to come on here and play the "if" game or make excuses about...

    a) the officials
    b) Ryan Fitzpatrick played way over his head
    c) the team was rusty coming out of the bye week
    d) Brett Favre threw a "killer" INT
    e) Lowery getting torched but it is okay he is a rookie
    f) the O-line just had a bad game
    g) Reggie Hodges leg
    h) the weather.

    Agreed?
