Barton mayy be good against the run but he is a liability in pass coverage. Three players that get picked on with regularity through the air are Smith, Coleman and Barton.
Yes, many times his receiver has caught the ball. Not as much as Lowery or Coleman, but he has given up a few.
Lowery is a mid round rookie who walked into a starting position. He doesn't posses the talent that Revis does, but once he catches on he'll be a quality player. Rhodes probably is a bit overrated, but even so he's still better then the majority of the league at his position. How you could question Revis is beyond me. He's the best player we've drafted in years and he's only in his second season. The other thing to consider is that with an improved run defense, teams will be taking to the air more often. Nobody had to throw on us last season because they could just run it straight down our throats. Increase the number of passes and the number of successful attempts will increase as well. It doesn't mean they're all suddenly bad players. As the pass rush picks up (which it already has this season vs. last) it'll make these guys look even better. The 4 teams we've played this season don't exactly have horrible offenses either. SD can score with the best of them, Arizona has an amazing WR core, NE has a good OL and a pretty damn good pair of WR's themselves, and the Phins are averaging 4.4 yards a carry even after we completely shut them down week 1.
we dont have any other option at ILB. id rather keep barton in to help with the run. we were talking about our linebackers, Smith and Coleman is an obvious issue. regardless bartons career is near the end so if anything id say we need to draft another ILB. but i am impressed with barton, at least hes effective against the run hed already previously proven a lack of coverage skills. i think its a steal contract wise, hes prolly being paid peanuts and seems to be in on every running play one thing most people around here forget is our run defense is so good teams tend to air it out on us. no excuse for the yardage allowed but something to remember though. so yes, to shore up our pass coverage we need a better coverage LB, a new nickelback, and a starting safety opposite rhodes. none of this will come until next year if at all, thats up to management. or for a young player like coleman or eric smith to suddenly improve. i expect this to be a problem but this defense looks to be amazing against the run so its progress.
Barton has never been the same since his injury a couple of years ago. He's maybe not a liability out there, but he's not a strong player, not fast enough against the pass. My guess is we will see more of Harris making plays as the year goes on, though. Pace seems to be doing well. But I expect the Jets to go LB in the draft next year, maybe not first pick, but a high one.
This is proven by the stats we are 27th in the league in giving up 3rd down conversions. http://weblogs.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/blog/ Championship defenses should be in the top 10 if you want to be considered a contender & not a pretender
The Jets made a choice. For years they have been getting pushed around in the front 7 because of undersized players. They have brought in some big bodies, and are stuffing the run, and rushing the passer much better. Because of this teams have been using the short pass effectively against the Jets. The problem has been the YAC. For the most part this rests on the nickel and dime backs they are bringing in on 3rd down. Just not making stop ya in your tracks kind of tackles after the catch. On third down, most of the LB's are either rushing the passer, or on the bench. The TD to Chambers that Harris was heavily criticized for on national TV wasn't his fault. yes he should have been a little deeper on the play, but there is no way he was covering Chambers one on one. Chambers was wide open. It was a blown coverage by a DB. The last couple of years the Jets have made great adjustments after the bye week. This seems to be the major issue right now. Hopefully it will be fixed when they come back.
He has much better guys around him. Pace, BT(circa 2006) and even Barton has been better. And Jenkins in front of him. Of course his tackles go down.
I'm still learning how to work my DVR so I only have the Cards game. Damn thing erased all the previous weeks stuff. I also only watched the second half because they didn't really have the ball too much in the first half. Anyway, they completed one good pass against our LB's to James out of the backfield against harris. Other than that they completed a handful of passes underneath the zone for about 3 yards a pop. I don't think Barton even saw the field in the 2nd half as we had mostly d-backs out there. There was also a deep out (15-20 yards) just over Paces finger tips, but I credit that as just a perfect pass in the hole in the zone. Not a good sample to look at, but they mostly worked the d-backs (probably more than 90% of the passes) in this game.
LOL, What is it? Has he been beaten "Many Times" or "given up a few"............. If you call the opposing WR catching a ball or 2, "many times", I suppose you are correct. He has been awesome this year and is basically the one player on this defense that has been All-Pro. So please don't confuse him with any of the other guys. He was beaten badly once this year................ Once and he got back in time to break up an under thrown pass by Cassell to Moss. Back on topic: This teams weakness is letting the opposing QB checkdown to the 3-4-5th options. It seems that whenever this defense needs a big stop (3rd down) they get beaten on 3rd and long. The one thing this defense has excelled at is getting it right on 1st and 2nd down. I can not believe how they get roasted on 3rd and long so consistently. It really is annoying and I think it has to do with philosophy. Hopefully they fix it on the bye week.
We are shit on 3rd down. The conversation could end there. We get better on 3rd down, we'll be very competitive. We keep giving up 3rd and 8s, Long year
I firmly believe Bob Sutton is the only problem with this defense. I've been watching the Jets for about 15 years now and this is probably one of the most talented defenses they've ever had...the LBs are great (although yes, a bit deficient against that pass, but that's mostly Barton) DL solid and secondary mostly good (this is our weakest spot actually...no depth..And even as Barrett tries to show the smallest flashes of being competent, he's mostly bad. I hate to say it, but we could realllly use Justin Miller's speed and big hits in the secondary and maybe he'll improve to a solid corner...cuz Lowery would be a great nickel guy.) Oh...and to Sutton, my main point...the guy doesn't know what a blitz is on 3rd down...hence why we've been awful on 3rd down for a while. There's a reason Jim Johnson and Monte Kiffin's defenses are alwaysss good...they blitz on 3rd down and occasionlly on non-passing downs to keep the offense off guard...there's no creativity in Sutton...Mangini should be calling the plays.
I don't want to come out and say I don't you so. BUT I told you so, Jets would have trouble in coverage. I thought they would be very tough to run against but struggle in pass coverage. Well thats a prediction I pretty much nailed. Give Raiderjoe some love.
How about this prediction- despite Jets investment in their oline, their running game would still struggle. Okay its still early but like that defense prediction its looking very good.
