Had a really strange argument with a co-worker today. He said that although he's a big Farve fan, he hated the fact that we ran up the score against the Cards. I didn't think at any point in the second half that we were guaranteed a win, given our history. I just thought it was interesting, and wanted to see what others thought.
Tell him to go read some Herm Edwards. You play to win the game. At least Mangini and co. don't talk about it, they just do it.
If he thinks we ran up the score he didn't watch the game. The Cards had been scoring at will, recovered 1 onsides kick and nearly a second.
Actually I think the D only gave up those 35 second half points to make it look like the O was not running up the score - they wanted to allow the O to keep it going, to get the practice. Give some TD's to other receivers than Coles, and of course run up Favre's stats. I mean seriously, the game was not in the bag until the Jets last score.
No, we did not run up the score. The Cards fought back to make it a 2 score game. We had to put distance between us to guarantee a win. If it was 56-7, he could argue we ran up the score. 56-35 makes it a 3 score game.... and not running up the score.
so winning a game 24-3 would be running up the score? our defense could not stop them, if we had just been content going down and kicking one or two field goals we lose the game.
You know, I don't think we ran up the score due to the Cards shredding our nickel and dime defenses, converting an onsides and almost converting another, all the while the Jets having suspect kicking and punting. But if we did? SO FREAKING WHAT?! I didn't question the Pats running it up last year. If the other team can't stop you, then keep scoring. Put it away. This isn't tee-ball, where every game is a tie and everybody goes home a winner. These are multi-millionaires out on a football field. If they can't earn their money, maybe they shouldn't be making their money.
not at all IMO its fair game in the first half!! then they came back swinging tell him to give his head a wobble
I disagree. While I was surprised they went for two, after thinking about it, it made as much sense as going for it on fourth down. Without the 2 pointer, the score is 55-35, three TDs - while very unlikely - wins the game. The Jets weren't comfortable with the way the Cardinals were moving the ball. The next time the Jets play the Cardinals in 2013, I don't think the two points will be an issue, however if it were a divisonal game there would likely be some sore feelings left over to the next meeting.....just my opinion
I just question the going for 2 but the Cards were scoring at will and had what gone 75 yards in 2 minutes twice in the 4th quarter. There is no question they would have scored again had we not gone for it twice in those 4th downs and given what a joke Feeley has been you couldn't risk kicking a FG in those spots.
We did the right thing. The game was never in the bag. If we played them 10 times this would be the one time we won by more than 2 scores. It was great practice for the offense, and a great way for Favre to lead the team into the bye week. Watch out after the bye, I think it just clicked for us.
no it wasnt. It was making the lead an even 21, thus 3 possession, 3 tds. There was no benefit of a 20 pt. lead...
Bullshit. The way AZ was scoring and getting onside kicks, the Jets needed to counter AZ somehow. Whoever argues otherwise should be donkey punched.
Worrying about concepts like "running up the score" is for Pop Warner games. This is the NFL. It's the offense's job to score every time they are on the field. If the opposing team's defense can't stop you, they can't stop you. Tough sh*t.
I completely understand that. I was all favor for going for 2 on the previous two touchdowns. But with under two minutes to go, when they have no time outs left, THEN you go for it? Fishy to me. The 4th and 5 throw to Keller was the last thing other than running up the score though.
